To make bricks in Minecraft, find clay, break clay blocks without Silk Touch to collect clay balls, smelt the balls in a furnace, then arrange four brick items in a 2×2 pattern on a crafting table to create one brick block. One clay block normally supplies four clay balls, so one mined clay block can become one brick block after smelting and crafting.

There are three separate objects in the process:
- Clay block: the natural block you mine.
- Clay ball: the smeltable item dropped when a clay block is broken without Silk Touch.
- Brick: the furnace output used to craft the decorative brick block.
Follow this order:
- Locate clay in a suitable water or cave environment.
- Break clay blocks without Silk Touch. Each clay block drops four clay balls, and Fortune does not increase that four-ball yield.
- Place clay balls in the furnace’s top slot and fuel in the lower slot. Each clay ball smelts into one brick item and awards 0.3 experience.
- Open a crafting table and place four brick items in a 2×2 square. The result is one brick block.
Do not put clay balls directly into the crafting grid expecting a building block. Smelting is the required middle step.
Where to find clay
Clay is commonly sought in shallow water, rivers, swamps, and lush caves. These locations come from guide excerpts whose exact generation details are not documented, so terrain and availability can differ between versions or worlds. Checking exposed riverbeds, swamp water, and underground pools is a practical starting route.

Plan a clay expedition
- Carry enough inventory space for clay balls or clay blocks, plus food and a way to return to your base.
- Search the edges and floors of shallow water first; exposed clay is easier to identify than buried deposits.
- Mark the route or bring a temporary chest if you intend to make several trips.
- Decide before mining whether you need raw clay blocks for decoration or clay balls for bricks. A non-Silk-Touch break gives the balls needed for the recipe.
Silk Touch and the drop you receive
Breaking clay without Silk Touch is the important condition in the brick workflow. If your tool has Silk Touch, the drop behavior changes and you may collect the clay block rather than the four clay balls required for immediate smelting. Switch to a tool without Silk Touch when your goal is brick production.
Smelt clay balls into brick items
Use a furnace with clay balls in the input (top) slot and fuel in the fuel (bottom) slot. Every clay ball produces exactly one brick item and 0.3 experience. The furnace therefore converts the four balls from one clay block into four separate brick items.

- Input: clay balls, not a clay block.
- Fuel: any fuel accepted by your furnace; the fuel choice changes how many items a load can process, but not the clay-to-brick recipe.
- Output: brick items collected from the furnace result slot.
- Experience: 0.3 per clay ball smelted, awarded when you take the smelted output.
For a large project, load several furnaces or process batches while gathering other materials. The recipe does not require a special furnace type; the ordinary furnace is the documented station.
Craft brick blocks from four bricks
Once you have four brick items, open a crafting table and fill a 2×2 square. The arrangement has no orientation requirement: all four positions must contain one brick item. One completed recipe returns one brick block.

A clay block therefore has a convenient one-to-one conversion:
- One clay block yields four clay balls.
- Four clay balls smelt into four brick items.
- Four brick items craft into one brick block.
This relationship makes project planning straightforward, provided every clay block is mined without Silk Touch and every ball is smelted.
How much clay do you need?
Use the following conversion table to plan a wall, floor, or façade. These quantities describe finished brick blocks and assume no losses.

If you are designing with slabs or stairs as well as full blocks, calculate the full-block portion first, then reserve additional brick items for the shaped pieces. The supplied recipe establishes the full-block conversion; it does not specify a universal item count for every slab or stair recipe, so consult the recipe book in your edition for those exact quantities.

What brick blocks are good for
Exterior walls and houses
Brick blocks give a regular, warm-colored masonry texture that works well for complete house walls or as an accent around another main material. Use them for a ground floor beneath a different upper story, corner pillars, window surrounds, or a foundation band. Alternating brick with a contrasting block can prevent a large wall from looking flat without changing the underlying structure.
Chimneys and fireplaces
Brick is fire-immune, making it a sensible material for a chimney or fireplace surround. Build the visible chimney from brick blocks, then frame the hearth with brick so the fire feature reads as intentional masonry. Fire immunity does not replace safe placement of the fire itself; leave the normal clearance your design requires and test the finished room before filling it with flammable decoration.

Pathways and courtyards
Brick blocks can define a path from a doorway to a road, well, farm, or harbor. A narrow strip of brick bordered by another ground material creates a clear route, while a larger brick courtyard gives villagers or players a durable-looking gathering area. Mix full blocks with the available brick slab and stair variants to soften straight edges and handle elevation changes.
Structural accents
Instead of building an entire structure from one texture, use brick for arches, lintels, support columns, retaining walls, and a plinth around the base of a tower. These smaller applications stretch a limited clay supply and make the brick color a deliberate focal point.

Building ideas that use different scales
Compact brick cottage
- Lay a rectangular brick foundation one block above the surrounding ground.
- Raise brick corner posts and fill the lower wall sections with brick.
- Place windows between the posts and use brick above them as a lintel.
- Finish with a contrasting roof so the warm masonry remains visible.
This approach uses brick where it has the most visual impact rather than consuming clay on every interior wall.
Workshop with a tall chimney
- Make a brick base around the workshop entrance.
- Reserve a wall section for a fireplace and extend a brick chimney above the roofline.
- Use brick stairs or slabs, where available in your edition, to step the chimney cap and roof transition.
- Repeat the chimney color in window trim or a foundation band for cohesion.
Riverside path
Lay a one- or two-block-wide brick route along a river, connecting a bridge, dock, and house. Use full brick blocks on level sections and shaped brick pieces at turns or short rises. Because clay is often found near water, the path can visually connect the place where the material was gathered with the finished build.
Fortified gate
Use brick pillars on each side of a gate, a brick arch above the opening, and a thinner brick strip along the wall base. The repeated vertical elements make a small entrance look substantial without requiring a completely brick-built fortress.

Deepslate, resin, prismarine, and mud bricks are related-looking or similarly named variants, but they are distinct materials with their own acquisition and crafting rules. If a recipe calls for stone, mud, prismarine, or another base, substituting clay will not produce that variant.

Troubleshooting the brick recipe
The furnace produces nothing
- Confirm that clay balls, rather than clay blocks, are in the furnace input slot.
- Check that fuel is in the lower slot and that the furnace has started processing.
- Verify that the output slot is not blocked by a full inventory or an incompatible item arrangement.
You received clay instead of clay balls
Your breaking method may have Silk Touch. The documented four-ball result applies when the clay block is broken without Silk Touch. Change the tool or mining method, then test one block before clearing a large deposit.
The brick-block recipe does not appear
- Smelt the clay balls first; four clay balls are not the same as four brick items.
- Place exactly four brick items in the crafting table’s 2×2 square.
- Check that you are using a current recipe book for your edition if the interface labels differ.
You crafted stone bricks by mistake
Stone bricks belong to a different material family. Return to the clay-ball-and-furnace chain for ordinary red brick blocks; mining or crafting stone does not substitute for clay.
Trading and edition differences
One guide excerpt reports brick trades costing 10 emeralds in Java Edition and 16 in Bedrock Edition, but that information is unresolved and should not be treated as a dependable cross-edition rule. If a villager offers bricks, inspect the actual trade in your world and edition before planning a build around it. Gathering clay and smelting it remains the confirmed production route described here.
Version and recipe-book checks
The recipe and generation excerpts used for this guide are undated. Minecraft mechanics can change, and Java and Bedrock can expose different interfaces or trading behavior. When a result conflicts with this guide, use the in-game recipe book and the block’s current tooltip as the final authority for your installed version. The core chain to verify is still simple: clay block, four clay balls, furnace smelting, four brick items, then a 2×2 brick-block recipe.
