To breed animals in Minecraft, feed two adult mobs of the same breedable species the correct breeding item. Most need to be fed directly by the player; food dropped on the ground usually will not start breeding. Cats, wolves, horses, donkeys and llamas must be tamed first, while axolotls require a bucket of tropical fish rather than loose tropical fish.
This guide lists every animal’s breeding food, explains unusual offspring such as turtle eggs and frogspawn, and shows how to build a pen that keeps animals close enough to enter love mode.
How breeding works in Minecraft
Breeding follows a simple pattern: find two adult mobs, hold the correct food, and use it on each animal. Hearts indicate that an animal has entered love mode. When both adults are in love mode and close enough to one another, they produce offspring or, for a few species, an egg or frogspawn block.
- Contain the adults. A fenced pen, wall or other enclosed space keeps the pair together. Open pastures make it easy for one animal to wander out of range while the other is in love mode.
- Bring the correct item. The item must be that species’ breeding food. A lure, healing item or generally edible item does not automatically count as breeding food.
- Feed both adults directly. Use the item on each adult. Items lying on the ground generally do not trigger the process.
- Wait for the offspring step. Most species produce a live baby. Turtles lay eggs, sniffers lay eggs that hatch over time, and frogs produce frogspawn. A horse and donkey produce a mule instead of a same-species baby.
Breeding is normally limited to two adults of the same species. Variants within that species can usually breed with one another, so different coat colors or regional forms do not have to match. The major cross-species exception in this animal list is a horse bred with a donkey, which produces a mule.

Complete Minecraft animal breeding food table
Use the exact item in the table. The requirement column includes taming, habitat and offspring details that commonly cause failed attempts.
| Animal | Breeding food | Requirement or result |
|---|---|---|
| Armadillo | Spider eye | Feed two adults. |
| Axolotl | Bucket of tropical fish | A bucket is required; loose tropical fish does not work. |
| Bee | Any flower | Feed two bees. |
| Camel | Cactus | Feed two adults. |
| Cat | Raw cod or raw salmon | The cat must be tamed. |
| Chicken | Any accepted seed | Examples include wheat, beetroot, melon, pumpkin and torchflower seeds where accepted by the game version. |
| Cow | Wheat | The same food breeds mooshrooms. |
| Donkey | Golden carrot or golden apple | The donkey must be tamed. Breeding with a horse produces a mule. |
| Fox | Sweet berries or glow berries | Feed two adult foxes. |
| Frog | Slimeball | The result is frogspawn, not an ordinary live baby. |
| Goat | Wheat | Feed two adults. |
| Hoglin | Crimson fungus | This hostile Nether mob is breedable. |
| Horse | Golden carrot or golden apple | The horse must be tamed. Breeding with a donkey produces a mule. |
| Llama | Hay bale | The llama must be tamed. |
| Mooshroom | Wheat | Uses the same food as a cow. |
| Ocelot | Raw cod or raw salmon | Feed an ocelot directly; this is not the same process as breeding a tamed cat. |
| Panda | Bamboo | Player feeding is required, and nearby bamboo conditions affect breeding. |
| Pig | Carrot, potato or beetroot | Any one of the three foods works. |
| Rabbit | Carrot, golden carrot or dandelion | Any listed food works. |
| Sheep | Wheat | Grass and certain grass blocks are also eaten to regrow wool, but wheat is the breeding item. |
| Sniffer | Torchflower seeds | The result is an egg that hatches into a snifflet. |
| Strider | Warped fungus | The same item also lures striders. |
| Turtle | Seagrass | Lays turtle eggs on a suitable home beach. |
| Wolf | Meat | The wolf must be tamed; accepted meats vary by edition and version. |
Animals with prerequisites beyond food
Tamed cats, wolves, horses, donkeys and llamas
Wild animals in these five groups cannot be bred until they are tamed. Taming and breeding are separate actions: after taming, use the listed food on two adult animals. For horses and donkeys, the pair must also be adults. A tamed horse bred with a tamed donkey creates a mule, giving this combination a transport-focused outcome rather than a horse or donkey foal.
Axolotls need a bucket
Axolotls are a frequent source of confusion because the accepted item is a bucket of tropical fish. Carrying tropical fish as a loose item is not equivalent and will not start breeding. Obtain the bucketed form before entering the pen, then use one bucket on each adult axolotl.
Pandas need suitable surroundings
Bamboo is both the panda’s breeding food and an environmental factor. Feed both adult pandas directly, and make sure the pair has nearby bamboo. A panda may eat bamboo naturally, but natural eating does not replace the player-fed breeding action.

Breeding animals whose offspring are not ordinary babies
Frogs and frogspawn
Feed two adult frogs slimeballs. The immediate result is frogspawn rather than a miniature frog. Frogspawn is an intermediate stage, so protect the area and allow it to develop according to the game’s normal rules.
Turtles and turtle eggs
Feed two adult turtles seagrass. A turtle lays eggs on a suitable home beach, so breeding can fail to produce visible eggs if the animals are not associated with an appropriate beach. Plan the enclosure around the beach rather than treating turtles like land animals that can lay anywhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSniffers and snifflet eggs
Use torchflower seeds on two adult sniffers. The result is an egg that hatches into a snifflet over time. Keep the egg in a safe location and allow the hatching process to finish instead of expecting an instant live baby.
Species-by-species notes and useful distinctions
Armadillos, bees and camels
Armadillos use spider eyes, an item that is easy to overlook because it is not a crop or plant. Bees accept any flower. Camels use cactus, so a desert crop or a small cactus supply can support a camel pen.
Rank #3
Chickens and the seed choices
Chicken breeding accepts seeds rather than a single crop. Depending on the game version, accepted choices include wheat, beetroot, melon, pumpkin and torchflower seeds. If a seed is rejected, check the edition and release you are playing instead of assuming that every seed type is universal.
Cows, mooshrooms, goats and sheep
Wheat handles four common cases: cows, mooshrooms, goats and sheep. A mooshroom does not need a separate mushroom-based breeding item. Sheep also eat grass and certain grass blocks to regrow wool, but that grazing behavior is different from the wheat feed used to enter love mode.

Foxes, rabbits and pigs
Foxes accept sweet berries or glow berries. Rabbits accept carrots, golden carrots or dandelions. Pigs accept carrots, potatoes or beetroot, so a mixed crop farm can support them without a dedicated food crop.
Ocelots versus tamed cats
Both ocelots and cats accept raw cod or raw salmon, but they are not interchangeable breeding cases. A tamed cat must be bred as a tamed cat, while an ocelot is fed directly as an ocelot. If the mob has the appearance or behavior of one group but you use the rules for the other, the interaction may not work as expected.
Rank #4
Hoglins and striders
Hoglins are hostile Nether mobs but still use a normal two-adult breeding interaction with crimson fungus. Striders use warped fungus, which also serves as their lure. Keep Nether pens especially controlled because hostile behavior and hazardous terrain make open-area breeding unreliable.
How to build a reliable breeding pen
A small, controlled pen is more dependable than an open field. The goal is not just to stop escapes; adults must remain close enough to recognize one another while both are in love mode.
Basic pen checklist
- Use fences, walls or another enclosure tall enough for the species.
- Install a gate or controlled entry point so adults cannot slip out while you are feeding them.
- Leave enough interior space for two adults without creating a large area in which they can lose contact.
- Bring a stack of the correct breeding food and keep extra food outside the pen for the next cycle.
- Use leads to move most mobs from the capture area to the pen. The breeding item usually also lures the animal, which can help with final positioning.
- For pandas, include nearby bamboo. For turtles, build around a suitable home beach. For Nether mobs, make the enclosure safe from lava and other hazards.
Moving animals into place
- Prepare the pen before collecting animals.
- Hold the species’ breeding item to attract the adults, or use leads where available.
- Close the gate before feeding. If one animal leaves during the interaction, bring it back rather than dropping food on the ground.
- Stand where both adults are reachable and use the item on each one.
Because the food often doubles as a lure, you can normally walk animals into the enclosure without separate bait. Leads are useful when a species does not follow reliably or when the route to the pen is dangerous.
Why animals will not breed
When hearts do not appear, check these causes in order:
Best Value
- Wrong item: Verify the table. Common mix-ups include loose tropical fish for axolotls, a flower for a species that needs a crop, or a lure that is not the breeding item.
- Only one adult was fed: Both adults need direct player feeding.
- The animals are not adults: Babies cannot be used as the two breeding parents until they mature.
- A taming requirement was missed: Cats, wolves, horses, donkeys and llamas must be tamed before breeding.
- The species was confused: An ocelot is not a tamed cat, and a mooshroom uses cow rules rather than a separate mushroom food.
- The adults are too far apart: Open pastures allow one animal to wander out of interaction range. Move both into a smaller pen.
- A habitat condition is absent: Pandas need nearby bamboo conditions, and turtles need a suitable home beach for egg laying.
- The edition or version differs: Accepted foods and variant behavior can change between Java and Bedrock releases. Check the specific release when an item listed here is rejected.
If the adults show hearts but no ordinary baby appears, identify the species’ offspring type first. Frogspawn, turtle eggs and sniffer eggs are expected intermediate results, not failed breeding.
Java variant notes for chickens and sheep
Mojang’s Java Snapshot 25w06a, published February 5, 2025, introduced warm and cold chicken variants and renamed the existing chicken variant temperate. The snapshot describes variant selection by biome category and specifies that blue and brown eggs hatch cold and warm chickens, respectively; an ordinary egg hatches the temperate variant. These details apply to that Java snapshot and should not be assumed for every Java release or for Bedrock without checking the version.
The same snapshot documents short dry grass and tall dry grass as edible by sheep for wool regrowth. This affects grazing and wool maintenance, not the breeding item: sheep still use wheat to enter love mode.
Choosing animals by farm purpose
| Farm goal | Useful animals | Food supply to plan | Special planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Food and leather | Cows, pigs, chickens, rabbits, sheep | Wheat, carrots, potatoes, beetroot and seeds | Keep breeding pens close to crop storage. |
| Wool and materials | Sheep, llamas, mooshrooms | Wheat or hay bales | Sheep need grass or suitable grass blocks to regrow wool after shearing. |
| Transport | Horses, donkeys, llamas, camels | Golden carrots or golden apples for horses and donkeys; hay bales for llamas; cactus for camels | Horses, donkeys and llamas must be tamed. Horse plus donkey produces a mule. |
| Utility and novelty | Bees, axolotls, frogs, pandas, sniffers, turtles | Flowers, bucketed tropical fish, slimeballs, bamboo, torchflower seeds and seagrass | Several produce eggs or frogspawn, and pandas or turtles have habitat conditions. |
| Nether farms | Hoglins and striders | Crimson fungus or warped fungus | Use enclosed, hazard-controlled pens. |
Cross-variant breeding
Same-species variants can generally breed with one another. You do not need matching variants before feeding two adults, so a mixed-variant pen can still produce offspring. The food requirement is tied to the species, not to the visible variant. The chicken variant behavior described for Java Snapshot 25w06a is a version-specific exception to plan around when eggs, biomes and variant outcomes matter.
Quick Recap
Quick reference: the safest breeding workflow
- Identify the exact species, especially when distinguishing an ocelot from a cat or a mooshroom from a cow.
- Check whether that species requires taming, a bucket, bamboo, a beach or another prerequisite.
- Build a small pen with a gate before moving the adults.
- Bring the exact breeding item, not merely an item the animal eats or follows.
- Feed both adults directly and watch for hearts.
- Wait for the correct offspring form: live baby, mule, frogspawn, turtle egg or sniffer egg.
- If nothing happens, check age, distance, food, taming and version-specific behavior before rebuilding the farm.
