Minecraft has several different “book” items, and they do different jobs. Craft a normal book from paper and leather; add a feather and ink sac to make a writable Book and Quill; sign it to create a persistent written book. Enchanted books carry enchantments to an anvil, regular bookshelves amplify an enchanting table, and chiseled bookshelves are six-slot storage blocks with redstone and hopper support.
The most important distinction is between regular and chiseled bookshelves: only regular bookshelves contribute enchanting power. Chiseled bookshelves store book items and can be automated, but they do not strengthen an enchanting table.

| Item or block | Main purpose | How you get it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Book | Basic crafting ingredient for bookshelves and other progression recipes | Three paper and one leather | It is not writable by itself |
| Book and Quill | Write notes, instructions, coordinates, rules, journals and other text | One book, one feather and one ink sac | It becomes a permanent written book only after you sign it |
| Written Book | Persistent, shareable text that can be stored or displayed | Sign a Book and Quill | Signed content is separate from the editable Book and Quill |
| Enchanted Book | Hold an enchantment until it is transferred to a compatible item | Enchant a book, find one in loot or obtain one through a librarian villager trade | It must be applied with an anvil, and compatibility still matters |
| Regular Bookshelf | Decorative block and enchanting-table power source | Six planks and three books | It is not six-slot item storage |
| Chiseled Bookshelf | Organized book storage and redstone automation | Six planks form the sides and back, with three slabs across the middle | It does not increase enchanting-table power |
| Lectern | Display one Book and Quill or written book; workstation for librarian villagers | Crafted as a lectern block | It holds one book at a time |
Recipes and interfaces are broadly shared between Java and Bedrock, but villager trades, screen labels and experimental features can change by edition and release. If a menu does not match the wording here, check the edition and version running on your world before assuming the mechanic is broken.
How to make a normal book
A normal book is the starting point for both writing and enchanting. The recipe uses three paper and one leather. The ingredients can be placed in any arrangement in the crafting grid because the recipe is shapeless.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Harvest sugar cane, usually found beside water, and turn three sugar cane into three paper.
- Obtain one leather from suitable animals or another in-game source.
- Open a crafting table or your inventory crafting grid.
- Place the three paper and one leather in the grid and collect the book.
Paper is the renewable part of the recipe once you have a sugar-cane farm. Leather is usually the limiting ingredient early in a survival world, so keep a small supply if you plan to make several bookshelves, lecterns or enchanted books.
What the normal book is used for
- Three books are used in a regular bookshelf recipe.
- A book is the base item for a Book and Quill.
- A book can be supplied to an enchanting table when you want to create an enchanted book rather than enchant a tool, weapon or armor piece.
- Books are also used in the broader enchanting-table progression, so making a few before building an enchanting room avoids a return trip for materials.
How to make and use a Book and Quill
The Book and Quill is the writable form. Combine one normal book, one feather and one ink sac. The feather and ink sac do not belong in the basic book recipe; they are added only when you want to write.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Craft or obtain a normal book.
- Get one feather and one ink sac.
- Combine the book, feather and ink sac in a crafting grid.
- Use the Book and Quill to open its writing screen.
- Enter text, move between pages as needed, and choose the sign option when the text is final.
A Book and Quill is useful for coordinates, mine or farm instructions, server rules, build plans, role-playing journals, emergency procedures and labels for shared storage. Keep a separate unsigned copy if you expect to revise the wording: signing converts the editable item into a written book with persistent text.
Unsigned versus signed books
An unsigned Book and Quill is a working document. A signed written book is a saved text object that can be handed to another player, placed in a lectern or kept as a permanent record. Signing is therefore a publishing step, not merely a different display name.
For a multiplayer information board, sign the final version, put it in a lectern and place the lectern where players can read it. For a private notebook, keep the Book and Quill until you are certain the pages are complete.
Lecterns and written books
A lectern holds one written book or Book and Quill. Mojang describes the block this way: “Lecterns, when placed into the world, will hold a single written book or book and quill.” That makes a lectern useful for a library, map room, town hall, quest board or server rules station. It also serves as the job-site block associated with librarian villagers, so lecterns naturally belong in a discussion of enchanted-book trading.

How enchanted books work
An enchanted book is a container for an enchantment. It lets you obtain the enchantment now and apply it to a compatible item later instead of committing the enchantment immediately to a tool, weapon, armor piece or other target.
Route 1: enchanting table
An enchanting table can enchant an eligible item or an ordinary book. The player supplies the item or book, lapis lazuli and experience, then chooses one of the offered enchantment options. Enchanting a book produces an enchanted book that can be stored until the intended item is available.
- Place the enchanting table in a safe, accessible room.
- Put an enchantable item or a normal book in the first slot.
- Put lapis lazuli in the lapis slot.
- Review the offered enchantments and the displayed experience requirement.
- Choose an option to consume the required lapis and experience.
- Collect the enchanted item or enchanted book.
The table is useful when you want a random selection from the enchantments available for that item and your current setup. Enchanting a book is particularly useful when you want to preserve a desirable result for a later anvil operation.
Route 2: anvil application
An anvil is the transfer point. Microsoft’s documentation explains: “Using an anvil: Players can combine an item with an enchanted book or with another identical item that has a different enchantment.” Place the target item in the anvil’s first slot and the enchanted book in the second. If the enchantment is compatible, the output combines the item and the book’s enchantment, subject to the anvil’s experience cost and normal anvil rules.
An anvil will not apply an enchantment to an incompatible item. For example, an enchantment intended for one equipment category cannot simply be forced onto an unrelated category. When a combination is rejected, check the enchantment’s intended item type rather than repeatedly rearranging the slots.
Route 3: librarian villagers
Librarian villagers provide an emerald-based alternative to table enchanting. Their trades can include enchanted books, allowing you to target a trade instead of relying entirely on the table’s random offers. The exact offers, prices and trade behavior are edition- and version-sensitive, so treat a librarian’s current trade screen as authoritative for that world.

This route is valuable when you need a particular enchantment repeatedly or want to build a stockpile without spending lapis on every attempt. It does require access to villagers, a lectern and enough emeralds, and the available book trades are not guaranteed to be identical across Java, Bedrock and different releases.
Choosing an enchanted-book route
| Goal | Best starting route | Resources consumed | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Use an enchantment immediately | Enchant the item directly at the table | Experience and lapis lazuli | The offered enchantments are selected by the table |
| Save an enchantment for a later item | Enchant a normal book | Experience and lapis lazuli | The book still needs an anvil for application |
| Seek a specific book repeatedly | Librarian villager trade | Emeralds and villager access | Offers vary by edition and release |
| Combine a book with equipment | Anvil | An enchanted book, the target item and the anvil’s experience cost | Compatibility is mandatory |
Regular bookshelves and enchanting-table power
Regular bookshelves are the blocks that support an enchanting table. For the standard maximum enchanting-table setup, use 15 regular bookshelves. Arrange them around the table with the required open space between the table and the shelves so the table can detect them; do not substitute chiseled bookshelves.

A common compact arrangement uses a one-block-wide ring or partial ring around the table, leaving the table accessible and maintaining the open gap. The exact room shape can vary, but the important checks are that the shelves are regular bookshelf blocks, the table can see them through the gap, and no decorative or storage block is occupying that space.
Why the number is 15
Fifteen regular bookshelves provide the normal maximum bookshelf contribution. Adding more does not raise the table beyond that cap, so filling an entire room with shelves is a design choice rather than a way to obtain stronger enchantments.
Bookshelf acquisition in survival
You can craft bookshelves from planks and books, or collect them from generated structures. Bookshelves can appear in village libraries, woodland mansions and stronghold libraries. If you break a regular bookshelf without Silk Touch, it drops three books rather than the complete bookshelf block; plan to bring replacement planks if you intend to rebuild the shelves elsewhere.
Generated libraries can therefore supply an early stock of books, while a sugar-cane and leather routine gives you a renewable source for a purpose-built enchanting room.

Chiseled bookshelves: storage, not enchanting power
A chiseled bookshelf is a separate block with a different role. Mojang’s description is explicit: “A shelf holds up to six books at once.” It is designed to store book items in six visible slots, making it useful for organized libraries, labeled manuals and compact archives.
Recipe and basic controls
The recipe uses six sturdy planks for the sides and back, with three slabs across the middle. After placing the block:
- Use the block with a book item to place that item in an available slot.
- Use an empty hand to remove a stored book.
- Repeat until all six slots are occupied or until the shelf contains the selection you want.
Because the contents are visible, a chiseled bookshelf can act as a physical index: one shelf for farm instructions, one for maps or exploration notes, and another for signed rules or story books. It is not a general-purpose chest, and its six slots should be reserved for the book items your design needs.

Chiseled bookshelves support hopper, dropper and hopper-minecart interactions. That enables automatic loading and unloading, book dispensers, archive systems and redstone-controlled libraries. A redstone comparator can indicate the last slot interacted with, which lets a circuit detect which shelf position was changed and build more deliberate selection mechanisms.
When designing an automated shelf, leave room for the hopper or dropper connection, decide which face receives or extracts items, and test the slot order with the comparator before hiding the wiring behind walls. Automation behavior can be affected by edition-specific redstone details, so verify the circuit in the edition used by your world.
Fuel value
The official chiseled-bookshelf article states that the block can be burned in a furnace to smelt 1.5 items. That is a small emergency fuel value, not a reason to dismantle a functioning storage wall; planks and other common fuels are generally more practical when available.

Why chiseled shelves do not fix a weak enchanting room
Chiseled bookshelves “don’t currently increase the power of enchanting tables like regular bookshelves do.” If an enchanting table offers only low-level options after you replace regular shelves with chiseled ones, the behavior is expected. Use chiseled shelves for storage and regular shelves for enchanting-table power.
Book, bookshelf and chiseled-bookshelf workflow for a new survival world
The following order minimizes backtracking while keeping writing, enchanting and storage options open.
- Secure sugar cane. Plant it beside water so paper production becomes renewable.
- Collect leather. Keep enough for the first books and any later expansion of the enchanting room.
- Craft normal books. Make the books needed for a Book and Quill and for regular bookshelves.
- Prepare writing supplies. Add a feather and ink sac when you need a Book and Quill.
- Decide whether the text is temporary or final. Keep it unsigned while editing; sign it when it should become a persistent written book.
- Build the enchanting setup. Use an enchanting table and up to 15 regular bookshelves, with the necessary open space between them.
- Add an anvil. This is required to transfer an enchanted book to compatible equipment.
- Use villagers when precision matters. A librarian can provide an emerald-based source of enchanted books, but offers depend on edition and version.
- Build chiseled storage separately. Use six-slot shelves for books, written records and automated archives, not as a substitute for the regular shelves around the table.
- Install lecterns where information is shared. A lectern can present one Book and Quill or written book to everyone using the room.
Common mistakes and fixes
“My book will not let me type.”
You are probably holding a normal book or an enchanted book. Only a Book and Quill opens the writing interface. Craft one from a book, feather and ink sac.
“I signed the book and now cannot edit it.”
Signing creates the written-book version. Keep an unsigned copy before signing if you expect future revisions.
“My enchanting table is still weak after I added shelves.”
Count only regular bookshelves toward enchanting power. Chiseled bookshelves are storage blocks and do not increase the table’s power. Also check that the shelves have the required open space between them and the table.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The anvil rejects my enchanted book.”
The book and target item are incompatible, or the current combination violates normal anvil rules. Confirm that the enchantment belongs on that item category and try a compatible target.
“I cannot find the villager book trade I need.”
Librarian offers are not universal across editions and releases. Check the villager’s actual trade screen in the current world and account for the emerald cost before planning a large build around one offer.
“My chiseled bookshelf is not feeding my redstone machine.”
Confirm that the block is a chiseled bookshelf rather than a regular bookshelf, that the hopper, dropper or hopper minecart is connected to the intended face, and that the shelf contains a book item in the slot your circuit expects. Use a comparator during testing to observe slot interaction before concealing the wiring.
Which book block should you use?
| If you need to… | Use… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Write coordinates, rules or instructions | Book and Quill | It is the editable writing item |
| Publish a final note for other players | Signed written book in a lectern | The text persists and can be displayed in a shared location |
| Save an enchantment for later | Enchanted book | An anvil can transfer it to compatible equipment |
| Reach the enchanting table’s normal maximum | 15 regular bookshelves | Regular shelves provide enchanting power |
| Sort and automate book storage | Chiseled bookshelf | It has six slots and supports hopper, dropper, hopper-minecart and comparator interactions |
| Offer or display one book at a station | Lectern | It holds one Book and Quill or written book and supports librarian-villager use |
Think of the system as a progression rather than one recipe: paper and leather produce the basic book; feather and ink make it writable; signing makes the text persistent; enchanting and anvils turn books into equipment upgrades; regular shelves power the table; and chiseled shelves organize the finished library.
