In Minecraft Java Edition, craft a normal boat with five planks of one wood type arranged in a U on a crafting table. The current Java recipe uses no shovel. To make a chest boat, combine any boat with one chest; the shapeless recipe preserves the boat’s wood style and adds 27 inventory slots while keeping one passenger seat.
This guide covers every boat and raft style, exact crafting layouts, the Java–Bedrock recipe distinction, chest-boat limitations, and fixes for the most common crafting mistakes.

| Item | Ingredients | Grid arrangement | Storage | Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard boat | Five planks of one wood type | U-shape: three planks across the bottom row and one in each outside position of the middle row | None | One entity |
| Chest boat | One boat and one chest | Shapeless; place both items anywhere in the crafting grid | 27 inventory slots | One entity |
| Bamboo raft | Five bamboo planks | Same U-shape as a boat | None | Boat-like behavior |
A normal boat is the economical choice for moving yourself or another entity across water. A chest boat costs the normal boat plus a chest, but provides mobile storage. A bamboo raft follows the same basic recipe and behaves like a boat while using bamboo’s distinct appearance.
How to craft a standard boat
Materials you need
- Five planks from one wood type.
- A crafting table, because the recipe uses a three-by-three grid.
Planks must all be the same type. Oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, and pale oak planks each produce the corresponding wooden boat. Mixing types, such as oak with spruce, does not produce an item.
#1 Best Overall
Java Edition recipe
- Open a crafting table.
- Put one plank in the left position of the middle row and one in the right position of the middle row.
- Fill all three positions in the bottom row with planks of that same wood type.
- Move the boat from the result slot into your inventory.
The middle position of the middle row stays empty. In the current Java recipe, there is no wooden shovel in the pattern.
Why older tutorials show a shovel
Minecraft’s boat recipe was changed during the 1.9 development cycle. A wooden shovel was added in snapshot 15w41a and later removed, restoring the five-plank pattern. If a video or image shows six planks plus a shovel, it is describing an older recipe rather than the current Java arrangement. Adding a shovel to the modern Java grid will not improve the recipe and can prevent the expected result.
Bedrock Edition qualification
Published guides do not agree on the current Bedrock requirement: one guide reports that Bedrock still asks for a wooden shovel, but that claim is not confirmed by a Bedrock-specific source here. If the five-plank layout produces no output in your Bedrock world, check the recipe book shown by your own game version and follow that displayed pattern. Do not assume that a Java tutorial applies unchanged to Bedrock.

Every boat and raft type
Wood changes the color and texture of the vehicle, not the basic boat function. The available wooden styles are:
| Wood or material | Result | Functional difference |
|---|---|---|
| Oak | Oak boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Spruce | Spruce boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Birch | Birch boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Jungle | Jungle boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Acacia | Acacia boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Dark oak | Dark oak boat | None stated; appearance differs |
| Mangrove | Mangrove boat | Added with the mangrove wood set |
| Cherry | Cherry boat | Added with the cherry wood set |
| Pale oak | Pale oak boat | Added with the pale oak wood set |
| Bamboo | Bamboo raft | Boat-like behavior with a raft appearance |
The visual choice is therefore mainly a building and matching decision. Use the wood that fits your base, dock, map palette, or available supply; the guides describing these variants treat their core boat function as identical.
How to make a chest boat
Craft the chest first
A chest uses eight planks surrounding an empty center position in the crafting grid. The eight planks can be any wood type for a normal chest; the center remains blank. A recipe image showing seven planks is incorrect because it leaves one required outer position unfilled.
Rank #3
Combine the boat and chest
- Place a completed boat and one chest anywhere in the crafting grid.
- Because the recipe is shapeless, their positions do not matter.
- Take the resulting chest boat from the output slot.
The result keeps the original boat’s wood type. For example, combining a mangrove boat with a chest produces a mangrove chest boat rather than changing the vehicle to another style.
What the chest boat provides
A chest boat adds 27 inventory slots. That storage travels with the vehicle, so it can carry supplies during a water journey without requiring a separate stationary chest at every stop. It remains a one-entity vehicle: adding the chest does not create an extra passenger position.
Irreversible crafting
There is no recipe that separates a chest boat back into a boat and a chest. Treat the combined item as a one-way conversion. If you might need a standalone chest later, craft another chest before committing the first one to the vehicle.
Rank #4
Standard boat versus chest boat
| Comparison | Standard boat | Chest boat |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting input | Five same-type planks | A boat plus one chest; the chest itself uses eight planks |
| Mobile storage | None | 27 slots |
| Passenger capacity | One entity | One entity |
| Wood appearance | Matches the planks used | Preserves the source boat’s wood type |
| Can it be split apart? | Not applicable | No separating recipe |
Choose a standard boat when the smallest possible craft is the priority. Choose a chest boat when moving items is more important than keeping the recipe to five planks. Since both retain one seat, the chest boat is a storage upgrade, not a passenger upgrade.

Planning the wood and material cost
Normal boat budget
Each standard wooden boat consumes five planks. Those planks must be from one wood type, so sort your materials before opening the crafting table. If the output slot is empty, count the planks and verify that no neighboring slot contains a different species.
Chest-boat budget
A chest boat requires the five planks used for the boat and the eight planks used for the chest, for 13 planks in total when starting from raw planks. The crafting sequence is usually easiest as two separate operations: make the boat, make the chest, then combine them. This also lets you stop after the first step if you decide you do not need mobile storage.
Best Value
Using boats for transport
Passenger planning
Both listed boat forms provide one entity seat. Decide who or what must travel before launching: the driver occupies the available seat, and a chest boat does not create a second place for another entity. The additional capacity is inventory space, not seating.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Loading a chest boat
- Open the chest boat’s inventory before leaving shore.
- Place only the supplies you want to transport in its 27 slots.
- Keep critical items organized so unloading at the destination is quick.
- Leave room for materials collected during the trip instead of filling every slot immediately.
Because the storage is part of the vehicle, breaking or losing track of the chest boat can also put its cargo at risk. Treat it as a transport container, not a replacement for a secure base chest.
Choosing a vehicle for a route
- For a short trip with no cargo, use a standard boat and spend the extra planks elsewhere.
- For a supply run, exploration trip, or relocation, use a chest boat so the cargo travels with you.
- For a coordinated build palette, select the wood style that matches the dock or shoreline; the functional behavior is not changed by that color choice.
- For bamboo-focused builds, craft a bamboo raft using the same U-shaped pattern rather than looking for a bamboo boat item.
Troubleshooting the recipe
The output slot is empty
- Check that the crafting table is open; a two-by-two personal grid is too small for the standard U-shape.
- Count five planks for a normal boat and confirm that the three bottom positions are full.
- Make sure the center position of the middle row is empty.
- Remove any shovel from the Java pattern.
- Confirm that every plank is the same wood type.
Oak and spruce will not combine
That behavior is expected. A boat recipe does not accept a mixed set of planks. Pick one species, clear the grid, and place five matching planks in the U.
The chest boat does not appear
- Verify that you have a completed boat item, not five loose planks still arranged in the grid.
- Use exactly one chest and one boat.
- Try a different arrangement; the recipe is shapeless, so no fixed positions are required.
- Check that the chest was made with eight planks around an empty center.
- If the vehicle is already a chest boat, it cannot be combined again to create a second storage tier.
A tutorial disagrees with your game
Check three variables before changing your materials: edition, game version, and whether the tutorial is showing an old snapshot. Java’s current standard pattern is the five-plank recipe without a shovel. Bedrock instructions may differ according to the version’s recipe book, and older 1.9-era material may show the shovel pattern that was later removed.
Version and naming notes
The boat family expanded over time: mangrove boats arrived with the mangrove wood set, cherry boats with the cherry wood set, and pale oak boats with the pale oak wood set. Bamboo uses a raft instead of a boat item, while retaining the same U-shaped crafting approach and boat-like behavior.
Published references disagree about when chest boats were introduced, giving either version 1.9 or 1.19. Because that release detail is unresolved, use the recipe and the recipe book in the edition and version you are actually playing rather than relying on a single historical date.
Quick Recap
Quick crafting checklist
- Open a crafting table.
- Choose one wood type, or choose bamboo if you want a raft.
- For a normal wooden boat, place five matching planks in the U-shape.
- For a bamboo raft, use five bamboo planks in the same pattern.
- For a chest boat, craft a chest with eight planks, then combine that chest with any completed boat in any two crafting-grid positions.
- Remember that a chest boat has 27 storage slots, still seats one entity, and cannot be split back into its two ingredients.
