Craft a standard Minecraft bed with three wool blocks of one color and three wood planks, then use the placed bed in the Overworld to set your respawn point. Keep that bed in its original, accessible position: breaking or moving it does not move the saved point, and a missing or blocked bed sends you back to world spawn after death. Never use a normal bed in the Nether or the End; it explodes instead of setting a spawn.
What you need for a Minecraft bed
The standard bed recipe uses six items arranged in two rows:
- Three wool blocks: all three must be the same color.
- Three wood planks: any wood type works, but use the same plank type in all three plank slots.
- A crafting table: the recipe is arranged on the table’s three-by-three grid.
The wool determines the bed’s color. The wood type does not change the basic bed function: a correctly crafted bed is used for sleeping and for setting an Overworld respawn point.
How to craft a bed, step by step
- Collect three wool blocks of one color.
- Collect three planks made from one wood type. Do not mix plank types in the three recipe positions.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the three wool blocks across the entire middle row of the crafting grid.
- Place the three wood planks across the entire bottom row, directly below the wool.
- Take the bed from the result slot.
- Place it in a safe, accessible location in the Overworld.
The finished pattern is a complete wool row over a complete plank row:

If the result does not appear, check the two requirements that are easiest to overlook: all wool is the same color, and all three plank slots use the same plank type. Also verify that the wool is in the middle row and the planks are in the bottom row.
How to set your spawn point in the Overworld
Place the bed where you intend to keep a base, then interact with it. In the Overworld, a successful interaction sets the bed’s location as your respawn point. The game confirms success with the chat message “Respawn point set.”
Sleeping is not required once the interaction is accepted. Current Java guidance also describes daytime use as capable of setting the point even when the player cannot sleep yet. The important check is the confirmation message, not whether the character completes a sleep cycle.
A reliable setup sequence
- Choose a location in the Overworld with room around and above the bed.
- Place the bed on a stable, accessible surface.
- Interact with the bed.
- Look for “Respawn point set.” in chat.
- Only after seeing that confirmation should you treat the location as your new death-respawn destination.
If no confirmation appears, interact again while standing where you can reach the bed normally. A bed that is merely crafted but never successfully used has not established the new point.

Keep the saved spawn point usable
The saved point is tied to the bed’s location and usable state. It is not a portable marker that follows the item or the player.
Moving a bed does not move your spawn
If you break the bed and place it somewhere else, the saved point remains associated with the original location. Interact with the newly placed bed to establish the new location. Do this immediately after relocating a base rather than waiting until after a death.

Breaking the bed can invalidate the point
When the original bed is missing, the game cannot use that saved location. If you die while the bed is gone, you return to the world’s default spawn instead of appearing at the old bedroom.
Leave clearance around and above it
Keep the bed reachable and leave clear space around and above it. Obstructions can make the respawn location invalid and can leave a player waking in an unsafe position. A decorative build that looks harmless from the front can still block the space needed for a valid respawn, so check the entire area rather than only the bed’s visible side.

Use a relocation checklist
- Place the bed in the new base.
- Confirm the interaction succeeds.
- Read the chat confirmation.
- Check that the bed remains present after surrounding construction is complete.
- Check that blocks, furniture, or low ceilings have not removed the clear space around and above it.
Why beds explode in the Nether and the End
A standard bed is an Overworld sleeping and spawn-setting item. Using it in the Nether or the End causes an explosion instead of normal sleep; Mojang’s issue tracker identifies this behavior as intended. Do not click a bed in either dimension to test it, reset a spawn, or attempt to sleep.

How to set a spawn in the Nether
You cannot set a Nether spawn with a normal bed. Use a respawn anchor, the Nether-specific option identified for this purpose. Keep the bed for Overworld use and treat the anchor as a separate mechanic rather than carrying an ordinary bed into the Nether.

What happens when you die?
After a death, the game attempts to use the saved bed location. That attempt succeeds only while the bed remains present, reachable, and unobstructed enough to provide a valid respawn position.

- Bed still present and usable: you respawn at the saved bed location.
- Bed moved or broken: the old saved location is unusable, so you return to world spawn.
- Bed blocked: the saved point may be invalid, and you can return to world spawn rather than being placed safely beside the bed.
This is why a bed should be reset after every move and checked again after building changes around it.
Troubleshooting common bed problems
The bed recipe will not craft
- Count the ingredients: the recipe needs exactly three wool blocks and three planks.
- Confirm that the three wool blocks share one color.
- Confirm that the three planks share one wood type.
- Check the arrangement: wool fills the middle row, planks fill the bottom row.
- Make sure you are using a crafting table’s three-by-three grid.
The game does not say “Respawn point set”
The interaction has not been confirmed. Try again from a position where the bed is reachable and inspect the chat after the interaction. If you recently moved the bed, the old position does not transfer automatically; the newly placed bed must be used.
You respawned at world spawn instead of your base
Inspect the original bed location. The bed may have been broken, moved, or covered by construction that prevents a valid respawn. Replace or reposition the bed in a clear area, use it again, and wait for the confirmation message before continuing.
The bed exploded
A normal bed was used in the Nether or the End. This is intended behavior, not a failed recipe. In the Nether, switch to a respawn anchor for Nether respawning. In the Overworld, use the bed only in a clear, accessible location.

The bed is present, but waking or respawning is unsafe
Clear blocks and other obstructions around and above the bed. The bed can remain visible while its usable space is blocked, so inspect the surrounding volume rather than only the block directly touching it.

A 2026 Java snapshot describes a separate Straw Bed. It is preview content, not the standard wool-and-planks bed in this guide. The snapshot note says it can be used once without setting a spawn point. Do not use that preview item as a substitute for a reusable Overworld bed when you need a dependable respawn location.
For ordinary play, the practical choice is straightforward: craft the standard bed for an Overworld base, and use a respawn anchor when you need a Nether respawn. Snapshot mechanics can change before release, so the Straw Bed’s behavior should be treated as specific to the snapshot in which it was described.
