Axolotls in Minecraft are aquatic mobs found in lush caves, usually around underwater clay. The reliable way to move one is a water bucket: use a water-filled bucket on the axolotl and carry the resulting bucket of axolotl to a water enclosure. To breed them, use buckets of tropical fish—not loose tropical-fish items. Ordinary breeding can produce a blue baby only about once in 1,200 births, but after you obtain one, each baby from a blue parent has a 50% chance to inherit blue.
Where axolotls spawn
Search lush cave biomes. Axolotls generate underwater around clay blocks, so a cave pool with a clay floor is a better target than a random underground lake. Mojang’s official Minecraft guidance describes five natural color variants—blue, cyan, gold, wild (brown), and leucistic (pink)—and places their spawning around underwater clay in lush caves.
Use azalea trees as a clue, not a guarantee
An azalea tree on the surface can indicate that a lush cave is below, making it a useful place to begin digging or exploring. It is not a reliable locator by itself: azalea trees do not always generate directly above a lush cave. Once underground, confirm the biome and look for the characteristic lush-cave vegetation, then inspect water pockets for clay and axolotls.
What to look for underground
- A lush cave rather than an ordinary cave or aquifer.
- Standing water with clay blocks beneath or beside the water.
- Enough open water for a mob to spawn and move; cramped one-block puddles are harder to search.
- A safe route back to the surface, because transporting a captured axolotl is easiest when you can carry it in a bucket.
Bring a water bucket before you start searching. You can make one with three iron ingots, fill it from any water source, and keep it ready on your hotbar. A second bucket is useful for making a temporary enclosure or replacing water you remove while exploring.

Axolotl colors and what they mean
Color does not change the capture method or the food required for breeding. The important difference is rarity: blue is the exceptional breeding result, while the other colors are the normal variants you are likely to encounter in a lush cave.
| Color | How it appears in this guide | Practical significance |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Rare breeding outcome | Target for a long-term breeding project; a blue parent gives each baby a 50% inheritance chance. |
| Cyan | Natural color variant | Can be captured and bred like the other ordinary colors. |
| Gold | Natural color variant | Can be captured and bred like the other ordinary colors. |
| Wild (brown) | Natural color variant | Can be captured and bred like the other ordinary colors. |
| Leucistic (pink) | Natural color variant | Can be captured and bred like the other ordinary colors. |
How to catch an axolotl with a bucket
A water bucket is the complete capture tool. The bucket must contain water when you use it; an empty bucket will not scoop up the mob.
- Fill a bucket from a water source.
- Approach the axolotl while keeping the water bucket selected.
- Aim at the axolotl and use the bucket on it (right-click on Java Edition or the equivalent use control on your platform).
- Confirm that the item in your inventory is now a bucket of axolotl. The mob is stored in the bucket rather than left loose in the cave.
- Carry the bucket to the destination and place the axolotl into a water-filled enclosure by using the bucket on the enclosure’s water.
Because the axolotl is stored as a bucketed mob, you can take it through tunnels, up ladders and over long distances without trying to lead it through every obstacle. Capture two adults if breeding is your goal; you can always release them into separate sections of the same pool.

Why the destination must have water
Axolotls can spend some time on land, but Mojang warns that they must return to water periodically or they die. Build or fill the destination enclosure before releasing the mob. A fully enclosed pool prevents accidental wandering and keeps the axolotl from stranding itself on a dry ledge.
A simple holding enclosure
- Use a solid wall, fence or glass boundary tall enough to prevent escapes.
- Make the floor and all accessible spaces water-filled rather than leaving dry shelves where an axolotl can remain out of water.
- Keep a spare water bucket nearby for repairs or expansion.
- Leave enough room to target each adult with a bucket of tropical fish when you are ready to breed.
What axolotls eat for breeding
Breeding requires buckets of tropical fish. A loose tropical-fish item does not satisfy the breeding requirement. Catch tropical fish into buckets first, then use those filled buckets on the adult axolotls.
Mojang’s official explanation specifically says that tropical fish are the favourite food for breeding and that the fish must also be transported in a bucket. This is the detail that causes most failed attempts: having tropical fish in item form is not enough.

How to breed axolotls
The following procedure works for raising ordinary variants and for starting a blue-axolotl project.
- Capture two adults. Scoop up two axolotls with water buckets and bring them to a secure water enclosure.
- Collect tropical fish. Find tropical fish in a suitable water area and use a bucket on each fish so you have buckets of tropical fish. Keep one bucket for each parent you intend to put into love mode.
- Feed the first adult. Hold a bucket of tropical fish and use it on the first adult axolotl.
- Feed the second adult. Use another bucket of tropical fish on the second adult. Both adults must be in love mode for a baby to appear.
- Wait for the baby. A baby axolotl is produced after the two adults enter love mode. It will remain in the enclosure, so keep the water secure.
- Observe the cooldown. The parents cannot breed again immediately. The cooldown is five minutes in Java Edition and one minute in Bedrock Edition.
Growing babies faster
A baby axolotl takes about 20 minutes to reach adulthood. Feeding can accelerate that growth, so use additional buckets of tropical fish if you need the new axolotl to become an adult sooner. The same bucket requirement applies when feeding for growth: use bucketed tropical fish rather than an unbucketed fish item.
Preventing accidental loss
Keep the breeding pool enclosed and deep enough that babies cannot be stranded on dry blocks. Interact with captured axolotls by feeding or breeding them. The farming tutorial notes that continued interaction through feeding or breeding prevents captured axolotls from despawning, which is especially important when you are storing many adults while waiting for a rare color.

How to get a blue axolotl
Blue is not a normal hunting find in the strategy described here; it is the rare result of breeding. The farming tutorial records a 1/1200 chance for a baby to be blue when breeding. That probability is low enough that repeated breeding is expected rather than exceptional.
Starting from ordinary axolotls
- Breed two adults with buckets of tropical fish.
- Wait through the edition-specific cooldown and breed again.
- Repeat the cycle, keeping every baby in a safe water enclosure.
- When a blue baby appears, separate or clearly mark it so you do not lose it among the other colors.
- Raise it to adulthood. Normal growth takes about 20 minutes, and feeding can shorten that time.
There is no guaranteed number of births before a blue baby appears. The 1/1200 figure describes the chance for each breeding outcome, so an early blue result is possible but should not be expected.
Expanding a blue line
Once you have one blue axolotl, breed it with another adult. Each baby has a 50% chance to inherit the color of one blue parent, according to the farming tutorial. This changes the project from searching for one rare event to producing blue descendants much more efficiently. Continue using bucketed tropical fish and respect the Java or Bedrock cooldown between attempts.

| Breeding stage | What to expect | Best practice |
|---|---|---|
| Before any blue parent | Each baby has a 1/1200 blue chance. | Run repeated breeding cycles and keep every candidate baby safe. |
| One blue parent | Each baby has a 50% chance to inherit the blue color. | Breed the blue adult with a healthy partner and mark the offspring. |
| After producing several blues | More blue adults become available for a dedicated line. | Separate blue adults from ordinary variants so the enclosure is easy to manage. |
Natural searching versus a lush-cave farm
For a few axolotls, direct searching is usually the simplest approach. A farm becomes worthwhile when you want many adults, a steady supply of babies, or repeated attempts at the blue variant. Choose based on the time you expect to spend travelling and searching versus building and maintaining a spawning room.

Building a basic natural-generation farm
The farming tutorial describes a dark water room built inside a lush-cave biome, with clay beneath the spawning area. The exact dimensions and collection design can vary, but the following sequence captures the essential operating requirements.
- Confirm the biome. Build the room within a lush cave rather than trying to reproduce the setup in an unrelated underground biome.
- Make the spawning room dark. Block outside light so the room remains a dark aquatic space.
- Place clay below the water. The clay floor gives the spawning area the condition associated with axolotl generation.
- Fill the room with water. Remove dry gaps where mobs could be stranded and provide enough open water for spawning.
- Move away from the room. The tutorial specifies moving more than 24 blocks away for spawning to begin. Stand far enough away for the room to be active, but remain within a practical return distance.
- Return and capture the axolotls. Use water buckets to collect the mobs that have spawned.
- Keep the captured stock active. Feed or breed the axolotls so they do not despawn, then transfer selected adults to your permanent enclosure.
A farm improves access to repeated spawns; it does not change the blue-baby probability. You still need breeding cycles with bucketed tropical fish to produce blue.
Troubleshooting common failures
The bucket will not pick up the axolotl
- Check that the selected bucket contains water. An empty bucket cannot capture the mob.
- Aim directly at the axolotl rather than at a nearby block.
- If the axolotl is partly out of reach, place water so you can target it safely, then try again.
The axolotls will not enter love mode
- Verify that you are holding buckets of tropical fish, not loose tropical-fish items.
- Use one bucket on each adult; feeding only one does not complete the pair.
- Make sure both mobs are adults and that the previous breeding cooldown has ended.
- In Java Edition, wait five minutes after a breeding event; in Bedrock Edition, wait one minute.
No axolotls appear in the search area
- Confirm that you are in a lush cave biome.
- Inspect the water for clay blocks; axolotls spawn around underwater clay rather than in every underground pool.
- Move more than 24 blocks away if you are operating a dark-room farm.
- Do not treat an azalea tree as proof that a lush cave is directly below; relocate and search another lush-cave water pocket if necessary.
An axolotl dies after transport
- Release it into water as soon as you reach the destination.
- Remove dry ledges or cover them with water so the mob can return to water periodically.
- Check the enclosure after breeding, because babies and adults can end up on exposed blocks if the pool is uneven.
The blue result is taking too long
The 1/1200 chance applies to each breeding outcome, so a long run without a blue baby is consistent with the stated probability. Continue the breeding cycle, observe the cooldown for your edition and keep all adults and babies secure. After the first blue appears, switch to the 50% inheritance strategy by breeding that blue adult with another axolotl.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist
- Locate a lush cave and inspect underwater clay.
- Carry a water-filled bucket for capture.
- Prepare a permanent water enclosure before releasing any axolotl.
- Capture two adults if you intend to breed.
- Bucket tropical fish; loose fish items do not work for breeding.
- Feed both adults, then observe the five-minute Java or one-minute Bedrock cooldown.
- Allow roughly 20 minutes for babies to mature, or feed them to accelerate growth.
- For blue, expect a 1/1200 chance per baby before you have a blue parent.
- After obtaining blue, use the 50% inheritance chance from a blue parent to build a larger blue group.
- Keep captured axolotls interacted with through feeding or breeding to prevent despawning.
