Prepare before you approach an animal
Bring the correct item
Put the taming item in an easy-to-reach hotbar slot before you approach. Bones, raw fish and seeds are accepted by different mobs, while mount-taming does not require a single special item. Carry extra attempts: an animal can reject an offering, and an equine can throw you off several times.
Use a safe, open area
Move an animal away from cliffs, fire, hostile mobs and deep water before starting. A clear area gives you room to retry a mounting attempt and reduces the chance that a newly owned companion wanders into danger while you are managing it.
Separate trust items from breeding items
Make a small chest or hotbar arrangement with taming items on one side and breeding foods on another. This prevents you from accidentally using a valuable breeding item when you meant to tame a wild animal, or assuming that a successful feeding animation means ownership has been established.
How to tame a wolf
Step-by-step
- Find a wild wolf and select bones.
- Approach without attacking it, then use the interact action with a bone.

Breeding wolves
Breeding is a separate action: feed raw meat to two tamed wolves that are ready to breed. Raw meat is the breeding food identified by the supplied guide; bones are for gaining trust, not for producing puppies.

Breeding cats
Two tamed cats can be bred with raw fish. Keep the fish reserved for this purpose after the adults are owned; feeding a wild cat and breeding owned cats are different stages.
Cat-taming problems
- If the cat repeatedly flees, stop sprinting, crouch and wait for it to settle before closing the gap.
- If the item is not accepted, check that you are holding raw fish rather than a cooked or unrelated item.

Recovering from repeated bucking

Safest practical approach
- Tame a horse by repeated mounting.
- Tame a donkey by repeated mounting.
- Use the current edition’s documented breeding recipe for those two owned animals if your goal is a mule.
- If a naturally generated mule is present, test the repeated-mount method in a safe pen and confirm ownership behavior before investing equipment.

Zombie horses and other edge cases
Zombie horses appear on the tameable list in the Minecraft Wiki material, but the retrieved notes do not describe their taming procedure.
