Allays are peaceful flying helpers that collect dropped copies of an item you give them. Find them in pillager-outpost cages or woodland-mansion jail cells, assign an item with a use interaction, and keep them within their operating range. A note block can redirect deliveries to a fixed collection point, and a dancing Allay can be duplicated with an amethyst shard.
What an Allay does
An Allay is a small, peaceful, flying Minecraft mob designed to retrieve loose items. It is not tamed through the usual animal-taming mechanics. Instead, you hand it one item to establish what it should look for. The Allay then follows the player who assigned it and searches for dropped copies of that item.
Assignment is different from taming
Use an item on an empty-handed Allay. The item becomes its target example, and the mob begins looking for matching items on the ground. It returns what it finds to its player rather than creating new copies. If you interact with it using an empty hand, it gives the assignment item back and stops that assignment.
The Allay has one inventory slot for a carried stack, in addition to the item used to define its target. That distinction matters in collection builds: the example item tells the Allay what to seek, while the carried stack is the material it has picked up and is trying to deliver.

What it can and cannot collect
- It searches for dropped items that match the item you showed it.
- It delivers collected items to its player unless a note block temporarily captures its attention.
- It does not duplicate the example item.
- It cannot remove items from chests or other storage inventories.
- The
mobGriefinggamerule must allow mob item pickup for it to collect world items. WhenmobGriefingis false, you can still hand an Allay an item, but it will not pick up matching items from the world.
Where Allays spawn
Allays generate in two structure types: pillager outposts and woodland mansions. They are not encountered as ordinary wandering mobs in a random cave, plains biome, or village.
Pillager outpost cages
Look for dark-oak cages near a pillager outpost. An applicable cage has a 50% chance of generating Allays, usually in a group of one to three. Outposts are hostile locations, so approach with equipment that lets you handle pillagers and secure the cage before trying to lead the Allays away.

Inside a woodland mansion, search the jail-cell rooms. These cells also have a 50% chance of generating Allays, generally with one to three in the cell. Mansions can be difficult to locate and contain hostile mobs, but a cell gives you a contained starting point once you reach it.
Secure the mob before transporting it
Do not assume an Allay will remain where you first find it. Close the cage or cell, move it into a temporary enclosure, or attach a lead before leaving the structure. Leads and enclosed paths are practical ways to keep it from drifting into danger during transport. If you are walking it home, keep the assigned item available so it continues following you after the initial interaction.

How to make an Allay collect items
Use this sequence when you want a player-following collector rather than a permanent sorting station.
- Choose the target item. Decide exactly which dropped item should be collected, such as a particular block, crop, or mob drop. Use one example of that item on the Allay.
- Confirm the assignment. Keep the item in view and move away slowly. The Allay should follow the assigning player. If you need to change the target, use an empty hand to take the item back, then assign a different example.
- Drop matching items in loaded chunks. Place or throw the target items where the Allay can search. Items in unloaded chunks cannot be reached while the area is inactive, so remain close enough for the collection area to stay loaded.
- Work within the search area. The documented maximum following distance is 64 blocks from the player. The Allay searches for matching dropped items up to 32 blocks away, so position yourself and the drops with both distances in mind.
- Allow for delivery pauses. After each delivery, expect about a three-second delay before the Allay searches again. A pause does not necessarily mean the mob is stuck.
- Collect the returned items. Under normal player-following behavior, the Allay brings the matching stack back to its player. Keep the route clear and watch for hazards while it travels.
How the search behaves in practice
An Allay is a retrieval assistant, not a vacuum that clears every nearby item. It is filtering by the example item you gave it. If you show it cobblestone, it will not collect dirt, tools, or unrelated drops merely because they are nearby. Conversely, every matching dropped copy in its reachable area is a possible target, so avoid leaving a large amount of the same item in places where you do not want it to work.

A collection field can therefore fail even when the player is technically within following range if the drops are outside the search distance or the chunks containing them are not loaded.
Using a note block as a delivery station
A note block lets you replace the player as the temporary delivery destination. When an Allay hears a note block play within 16 blocks while it is delivering, it switches its focus to that note block. It searches around the block and delivers there for 30 seconds, then returns its attention to its player.

Simple note-block collection setup
- Assign an item to the Allay in the normal way.
- Place a note block at the intended drop-off point.
- Put a hopper or another collection component beneath or adjacent to the note block, depending on the storage layout you are building.
- Play the note block while the Allay is within its 16-block sound range and is carrying out a delivery.
- Watch for the vibration particle, which indicates that the note block has captured the Allay’s attention.
- Keep the target area arranged so matching drops are around the note block during its 30-second focus period.
The note block is a temporary target, not a permanent reassignment. After the focus period ends, the Allay targets its player again. If you need another delivery window, play the note block again while the Allay is in range.
Prevent accidental redirection
Nearby note blocks can capture the wrong Allay. Separate stations spatially and avoid playing multiple blocks where their sound ranges overlap. Wool placed between an Allay and a note block can block the sound interaction. In a multi-Allay build, use wool as a sound barrier and give each station a clearly separated operating area.

Player-following collection versus a note-block station

Choose player-following collection when you want the Allay to move with you. Choose a note-block station when drops are produced in a repeatable area and you want them routed toward storage. The station is especially useful when the note block is positioned over a hopper or another collection point, but it does not turn an Allay into a chest inventory sorter by itself.
Can an Allay sort items into a chest?
Not directly. An Allay cannot open a chest, take items from it, or perform the normal input-and-output behavior of a storage sorter. It only retrieves matching items that are lying in the world.

You can still build a practical collection system around a chest:
- Give an Allay the item type you want that station to handle.
- Arrange the collection area so that matching drops are loose and within the Allay’s search area.
- Use a note block to redirect deliveries to a fixed point.
- Place a hopper or comparable collection component at that point and connect it to a chest or other storage.
This arrangement is better described as item-specific routing than chest sorting. Each Allay is filtering by its assigned example, while the hopper moves the delivered items into storage. If several stations are used, keep their note-block ranges isolated so one Allay does not deliver to another station.
How to duplicate Allays
Duplication requires a jukebox, a music disc, and an amethyst shard. The Allay must be dancing to the record before you give it the shard.
Duplication procedure
- Bring an Allay to a jukebox in a safe, enclosed area.
- Insert and play a music record. Wait for the Allay to begin dancing.
- While it is dancing, use an amethyst shard on the Allay.
- The shard is consumed, and the single Allay splits into two Allays.
- Allow the new pair to remain secure while you decide how to assign their collection targets.
Mojang writer Sofia Dankis described the result on June 28, 2022: “The allay will consume the shard and split in two. Voila! You now have two allays!” The shard is not returned, so repeated expansion requires additional shards.

Cooldown and edition notes
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.19.1 release notes added Allay duplication and specify a five-minute cooldown. Both Allays share that cooldown after a duplication, so immediately feeding the new pair more shards will not create another pair. Wait for the cooldown to expire before attempting the next duplication.

The 2022 Mojang article described the feature as available in Bedrock at publication and coming to Java with version 1.19.1. Because the cited release notes are Java-specific, check the exact edition and game version if your world behaves differently. The jukebox, dancing, shard, and cooldown sequence should be tested against the version running your world before you design a large breeding-style collection hall.

- Use a lead or enclosure during transport. An unprotected Allay can wander away from the area where you found it.
- Keep the assignment item ready. The assigned item helps it continue following you when you are moving between the discovery site and your base.
- Protect the route. Allays are vulnerable to ordinary environmental hazards. Cover dangerous drops, fire, water currents, hostile-mob areas, and other hazards along the path.
- Isolate collection stations. A note block can redirect an Allay unexpectedly, so use distance and wool barriers to keep neighboring systems from interfering.
- Check gamerules before troubleshooting. If
mobGriefingis false, the Allay will not pick up world items even though hand interactions still work.
Troubleshooting common problems

Designing a reliable Allay collection area
For temporary cleanup
Assign the item, keep yourself near the work site, and let the Allay follow you as you break blocks or gather drops. This is the least complicated arrangement because it needs no jukebox, note block, hopper, or permanent enclosure. Its limitation is mobility: the player must remain close enough for the Allay to operate.
For a fixed farm output
Build a contained station around a note block and a hopper. Keep loose matching drops in a controlled area, trigger the note block while the Allay is carrying a delivery, and use wool or physical separation to prevent neighboring stations from competing for the same mob. This approach works best when one station has one clearly defined item target.
For multiple item types
Use separate Allays with separate assignment items and physically separated delivery points. The Allays themselves distinguish items by their examples; the hoppers and chests only receive what reaches their station. Avoid placing note blocks close enough that a sound intended for one station can redirect another Allay.
Quick checklist before you build
- Have you located a pillager-outpost cage or woodland-mansion jail cell?
- Did you secure the Allay before leaving the structure?
- Did you assign the exact item you want collected?
- Are the drops in loaded chunks and within the 32-block search distance?
- Can the player remain within the 64-block following range?
- If using a station, is the note block within 16 blocks and connected to a hopper or storage point?
- Are neighboring note blocks isolated with distance or wool?
- Is
mobGriefingenabled if you expect world-item pickup? - For duplication, do you have a jukebox, a record, an amethyst shard, and a safe enclosure?
Key limitations to remember
An Allay is most useful when you treat it as a targeted courier. It retrieves loose matching items, follows its player, and can temporarily deliver to a note block. It does not mine, open chests, or manufacture the item shown to it. The strongest builds therefore combine the Allay’s filtering behavior with ordinary storage components: keep the search field loaded, give each mob a precise target, and let a hopper handle the final move into a chest.
