A Microsoft account does not automatically sync every Minecraft world to every device. The right way to move a save depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock, which device holds the world, and whether it is local, backed up to a platform cloud, or stored on a Realm. For multiplayer, players must match the host’s edition: Java players join Java games, and Bedrock players join Bedrock games.
Are Minecraft worlds saved to your Microsoft account?
Not necessarily. A Microsoft account gives you an identity for signing in and can provide access to eligible purchases, Realms, and content on supported devices. That is separate from the location of a particular world file. A world can be stored locally on one device, included in a platform’s cloud save, or held in a Realm. Signing into the same account on a second device does not by itself prove that a local world has been copied or uploaded.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Xbox cloud saves are associated with the Microsoft account. Minecraft says that while you are online and signed in, worlds are backed up automatically. New worlds are backed up, and worlds created offline are backed up the first time they are played online. However, worlds you do not play remain on the device until they are backed up. In Minecraft’s Manage Worlds view, cloud-synced, cloud-only, and local-only status helps distinguish which worlds are available in the cloud; the view also offers upload and download actions.
- Local-only: The world is on that device; do not assume another device can see it.
- Cloud-synced or cloud-only: The world is associated with the Xbox cloud save, subject to the account and device being signed in appropriately.
- Realm: The world is stored in a shared online Realm, from which an eligible player can download a copy.
Before replacing a device, reinstalling the game, or expecting to continue on another platform, check the specific world’s storage state and make a backup or transfer. The account identifies you; it is not a universal synchronization service for every save on every platform.

How do you transfer a Minecraft world to another device?
First identify the edition and the source device. Java and Bedrock use different world formats and transfer routes, and some Bedrock instructions apply only to a particular storage setting. Choose the method that matches the world rather than assuming that copying an account login will move it.
| World and source | Documented transfer method | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Java single-player world on a computer | Make a ZIP backup, then put the world folder in the destination computer’s Minecraft saves folder. |
The destination needs Java Edition and the correct world folder. The official instructions provide separate folder paths for Windows and macOS. |
| Bedrock world moving between supported devices | Upload the world to a Realm, sign into the same Microsoft account on the destination, then download the world. | An active Realm trial or paid subscription and current game versions on both devices are required. |
| Bedrock world on Android | Copy the minecraftWorlds folder to a computer over USB. |
This documented route is for worlds using File Storage Location: External; it is not a universal route for Android worlds. |
Move a Java Edition single-player world
- Open Minecraft Java Edition and select Singleplayer.
- Select the world you want to move, choose Edit, then select Make Backup. Minecraft creates a ZIP backup with the backup date in its title.
- Copy the ZIP backup to the destination computer using a transfer method available to you.
- Unzip the backup and place the resulting world folder in the destination computer’s Minecraft
savesfolder. Use the Windows or macOS location that applies to that computer. - Start Java Edition and check the Singleplayer list for the transferred world.
Keep the ZIP as a separate backup until you have confirmed that the destination world opens and contains the expected progress. Moving a world folder is not the same as transferring an account: the destination still needs access to Java Edition, and the world must be placed in the game’s saves location.

Move a Bedrock world through a Realm
- On the source device, confirm that Minecraft is up to date and that you have an active Realm trial or paid subscription.
- Upload the single-player world to an available Realm slot. If you choose to replace a slot’s current world, first download anything in that slot that you want to keep.
- On the destination device, install or update Minecraft Bedrock and sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the Realm.
- Open the Realm and use its world options to download the uploaded world.
- Look for the downloaded copy in the destination device’s Worlds list.
The download is a copy in the local Worlds list; it does not mean every future change to that local copy will automatically replace the Realm world. Treat the Realm and downloaded save as separate copies unless you deliberately upload or replace a Realm world again.

Copy a Bedrock world from Android by USB
Minecraft’s direct Android file-copy instructions are for worlds stored with File Storage Location set to External. If the world uses Application storage, do not assume that the same folder-copy steps will work; use the documented route for that storage mode instead.
- On the Android device, check the Minecraft storage setting and verify that the world is using External storage.
- Connect the device to a computer with a data-capable USB cable whose connector fits the device.
- When prompted on Android, select File Transfer or MTP.
- Copy the
minecraftWorldsfolder from the device to the computer, keeping the copied files as a backup before changing or deleting anything on the phone.
A cable that only charges the phone will not provide the file-transfer connection described here. The USB cable is relevant to this Android workflow only; it is not a general requirement for Minecraft world transfers.
Can Java and Bedrock play together?
No. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements distinguish the editions: a Java-hosted game requires Java Edition, and a Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game requires Bedrock. The phrase “cross-platform” does not mean that Java and Bedrock can join one another’s sessions.

| Host’s game | Who can join under the documented edition rules? | Platform detail |
|---|---|---|
| Bedrock | Players using Bedrock on supported Bedrock platforms. | Bedrock is the cross-platform option across supported Bedrock devices. |
| Java | Players using Java Edition. | Java Realms cross-play is listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
| Java host with Bedrock player, or Bedrock host with Java player | Not compatible as a standard edition-to-edition join. | Match the edition first; having a Microsoft account does not remove the edition requirement. |
When choosing a shared world, check three things in order: whether everyone has the host’s edition, whether each console player meets that platform’s online requirements, and whether the group needs a world that stays available when its owner is offline. That last need is what makes a hosted Realm different from an ordinary locally hosted session.
Why can’t you join a friend’s Minecraft world?
Edition mismatch is a common first check, but joining also depends on the game version, connection, platform service, account permissions, and the host’s invitation or world settings. Work through the gates one at a time rather than repeatedly sending invitations without confirming them.
- Match editions. Confirm that both players are using Bedrock or both are using Java, according to the host’s game. Java and Bedrock do not join each other’s sessions.
- Update the game. Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements call for the latest release. Check both players’ installed versions before trying again.
- Check the connection type. The requirements call for stable internet or LAN. For LAN play, the players need to be using the same local network; for online play, check that the connection is working for both.
- Check console online membership. Online multiplayer on Xbox requires Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation requires PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch requires Nintendo Switch Online, as applicable.
- Check account permissions. Console and mobile players need a Microsoft account. Child accounts need multiplayer permission enabled through the relevant account controls.
- Confirm the Realm invitation. A Realm requires an invitation from its host. Verify that the player is invited to the correct Realm and is signing in with the intended account.
- For PlayStation, verify account linking. A Microsoft account must be linked to the PlayStation Network account for cross-platform games or Realms. Minecraft says one Microsoft account can be linked to a PSN account at a time.
Java play on a computer also requires the computer to meet Java Edition’s system requirements. Marketplace purchase access on PlayStation has platform-specific limits, so linking accounts for cross-play should not be treated as a promise that every purchase will be available on every platform.

What happens to old Mojang accounts and worlds?
The Mojang-to-Microsoft account migration period is over. Minecraft announced Java account migration on October 21, 2020, and says the grace period concluded December 18, 2023. Minecraft Support no longer assists with migration-related queries. A new Microsoft account does not automatically recover the old account’s entitlements or player identity.
An old Java single-player world may still be present as a local file on the computer, but Minecraft’s guidance says playing it requires Java Edition purchased through a Microsoft account. In a multiplayer world or server, signing in with a new Microsoft account makes you appear as a new player, at the default spawn and without your old items. The world file and the player identity associated with progress are distinct: finding the save does not restore an old account identity.

Replacing a Realm’s active world can discard progress if you have not saved a copy. Minecraft recommends downloading the world before replacing it and warns that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely. Do not treat a Realm’s automatic backups as a permanent archive.

- Before replacement: Download the current world if there is any progress you may want later.
- For Bedrock: Downloaded worlds appear among All Worlds.
- For Java: Use the Realm’s World Backups controls to download a backup into single-player worlds.
- After downloading: Confirm that the local copy appears before replacing the Realm slot.
A Realm download and a Realm replacement are different actions: downloading preserves a local copy, while replacing changes which world occupies a Realm slot. Make the preservation copy first, then choose the replacement only when you intend to change the shared world.

Which Minecraft Realm plan fits a shared world?
Realms are useful when a group wants an online shared world that invited friends can access without relying on the owner to host a local session. They also provide a route for moving a Bedrock world between devices. The Minecraft US product page, checked October 13, 2026, lists the following recurring monthly prices and concurrent-player allowances:
| Plan on Minecraft’s US page | Listed recurring price | Concurrent players | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bedrock Realms | USD $3.99 per month | Host plus 2 players | Three persistent world slots; backups. |
| Bedrock Realms Plus | USD $7.99 per month | Host plus 10 players | Three persistent world slots; backups; access to the Marketplace Pass catalog. |
| Java Realms | USD $7.99 per month | Host plus 10 players | Three persistent world slots; backups. |
The listed prices are from the US page and may not match local prices, taxes, or future rates. Check the live Minecraft product page for current terms and plan details. A Realms subscription belongs to its subscriber; being invited to play is not the same as owning the Realm service.
Choose by edition first, then by the number of people who need to play at the same time and whether persistent access matters. Bedrock Realms is for Bedrock worlds, while Java Realms is for Java. A plan’s concurrent-player allowance is not the number of world slots: Minecraft lists three persistent world slots for each Realm plan.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- You want the same save on another computer and play Java: Make a dated ZIP backup in the Singleplayer world’s Edit menu, then place the unzipped world folder in the new computer’s
savesfolder. - You want to move a Bedrock save between supported devices: Use a Realm upload and download, with current game versions and an active trial or subscription.
- You want an Android file copy: Confirm External storage, then use USB File Transfer/MTP to copy
minecraftWorlds. - You want to join a friend: Match Java or Bedrock first, then check release version, internet or LAN, console membership, account permissions, and Realm invitation.
- You cannot sign in to an old Mojang account: Migration ended December 18, 2023; a new account does not restore old entitlements or multiplayer identity.
