To host FTB Academy 1.16, install Java 8, use the official Feed The Beast server installer for release 1.4.1, allocate at least 4 GB of RAM (6 GB is recommended), and make every player use the same Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, and modpack release. You can run the server on your own computer or use managed hosting. The important compatibility rule is exact version matching: the server and every client must use the same FTB Academy release and Forge profile.

What FTB Academy 1.16 is

FTB Academy 1.16 is a Forge-based modpack for Minecraft 1.16.5. Feed The Beast describes it as “A modpack for beginners,” so its progression is intended to teach modded-Minecraft systems rather than assume extensive prior experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Feed The Beast page lists six releases, with 1.4.1 shown as the latest release. That release was published on 1 July 2021; the page was last updated on 12 February 2025. The same page reported 125,557 installs and 454,959 plays in its 2025 statistics. Those figures describe activity on the page, not a guarantee of current server population or support.

For a new server, use 1.4.1 unless the administrator deliberately chooses another listed release. A different release can work, but every connected player must install that exact release rather than simply installing a pack with the same name.

Requirements before you install

Requirement What to use Why it matters
Operating system Use the installer matching your system: AMD64 Windows, macOS, Linux, or FreeBSD. The official server installer generates files and scripts for the selected platform.
Minecraft and loader Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge, as supplied by the FTB Academy profile. A different Minecraft version or modloader cannot join this server.
Java Java 8. It is the published requirement for the pack and is needed by both the launcher and server process.
Memory 4 GB RAM minimum; 6 GB recommended. Modded servers need more memory than an unmodded vanilla world. Leave additional memory for the operating system if the server shares a machine.
Storage location A dedicated local folder outside OneDrive and other synchronised directories. Sync tools, special characters, and restricted folders can interfere with installers, file locks, and world saves.

Install Java 8 so it is available to the account that will run the server. A launcher may use a different Java installation from the one visible in your normal terminal, so verify both the client launcher setting and the server process if troubleshooting becomes necessary.

Install the client profile first

Each player should install the pack through the official FTB App unless the server operator provides a specific, compatible alternative. The client profile is where Minecraft, Forge, and the pack’s mods are selected together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install and open the FTB App from the official Feed The Beast site.
  2. Search for FTB Academy 1.16 and select the 1.16 profile.
  3. Choose release 1.4.1, unless the server administrator has specified another release.
  4. Open the profile details and confirm that it reports Minecraft 1.16.5 and Forge before launching.
  5. Start the profile once, allow the launcher to download its files, and reach the main menu. This confirms that the client-side Java and mod files are usable before you attempt a multiplayer connection.

Do not update individual mods inside the profile. A manually changed mod, Forge build, or configuration can make the client different from the server even when the visible pack version still looks correct.

Download the official server files

Feed The Beast’s versions page provides the server files through its server installer. Its instruction is to download the server files for the selected version using that installer. Choose the installer for AMD64 Windows, macOS, Linux, or FreeBSD, matching the machine that will stay online.

The exact Forge build filename is not exposed on the retrieved release page. Do not guess a Forge jar name or download an unrelated Forge build. Let the official installer place the bundled Forge files and use the start script that it generates.

Create a clean server folder

  1. Create a folder dedicated to this world, such as an FTB Academy server directory in a location you control.
  2. Keep it outside OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud Drive, network shares, and other synchronised locations.
  3. Avoid unusual characters in the complete path and do not place the folder under a directory that requires administrator permission for normal writes.
  4. Keep the folder separate from the client installation. The server pack has its own libraries, configuration, world, logs, and scripts.

Run the installer

  1. Download the server installer for release 1.4.1, or for the release chosen by the administrator.
  2. Run it and select the dedicated server folder you created.
  3. Allow the installer to generate the libraries, Forge files, configuration directories, and platform-specific start files.
  4. Open the folder and read the generated files before changing anything. The installer is the authoritative source for the Forge build and launch command.

Accept the EULA and perform the first launch

The first launch normally stops or prompts until the Minecraft EULA is accepted. Read the EULA, then set the generated EULA file to indicate acceptance as required by the installer. Only the server operator should make this change, because running the server means agreeing to Mojang’s terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the generated start script once from the server folder.
  2. If it stops for EULA acceptance, close the process, read the EULA file, and change the acceptance setting only if you agree.
  3. Run the same start script again and wait for the console to report that the server has finished starting.
  4. Stop the server cleanly from its console command rather than closing the window. This allows the world and region files to flush safely.

Use the generated script instead of double-clicking an arbitrary Forge jar. The script contains the installer-selected classpath and arguments, and it is the safest place to apply memory settings supplied by the server pack.

Set memory without starving the machine

The published baseline is 4 GB of RAM, with 6 GB recommended. Treat those as server-process guidance, not as the total memory requirement for a computer that is also running the game, the operating system, backups, and other services.

Situation Starting allocation Adjustment rule
Small test server on a machine with plenty of spare memory Begin at the 4 GB minimum. Watch the server console and operating-system memory use; increase only if the process repeatedly runs short of memory.
Normal small group Start near the 6 GB recommendation. Keep enough RAM free for the host and for the players’ client machines.
Busy world or shared host Use the host’s available memory and the provider’s documented limits rather than blindly increasing the heap. More heap cannot compensate for a slow CPU, overloaded disk, or incompatible mods.

If the generated script contains Java heap flags, adjust the existing values there rather than replacing the entire command. A typical format uses -Xms for the initial heap and -Xmx for the maximum heap; use values appropriate to the machine and keep the maximum at least within the pack’s published requirement. Restart the server after changing flags and monitor actual use over a normal play session.

Test locally before opening the server to the internet

Start the server on the host machine and connect from the same computer or local network first. This separates installation problems from router and firewall problems.

  1. Confirm that the console reaches a completed-startup message without a crash or repeated error.
  2. Note the world name and the address the server process is listening on.
  3. Launch the matching FTB Academy client profile and choose multiplayer.
  4. Add the server using the host’s local address when testing from the same network.
  5. Join, move around briefly, open inventories, and quit cleanly. Check the server console for errors during this test.

Only after a local connection succeeds should you configure external access. Open the server’s configured listening port in the host firewall and router, forward it to the computer running the server, and give friends the public address or hostname. The exact port is the value in the server configuration; do not assume that a router rule for another game is correct.

Self-hosting means the computer and network must remain available whenever friends want to play. You are responsible for router configuration, firewall rules, operating-system updates, backups, power interruptions, and keeping the server process running.

Make clients and server match exactly

Every player must install the same FTB Academy release, Minecraft version, and Forge profile as the server. CurseForge’s profile guidance states that a mod and its profile must use the same modloader, and incompatible Minecraft-version or modloader combinations cannot be selected together.

  • Server release: 1.4.1 if that is the release you installed.
  • Minecraft: 1.16.5.
  • Modloader: Forge, not Fabric or a different Forge generation.
  • Pack files: use the server pack’s files and the launcher profile’s files without manually adding or removing mods.
  • Configuration: if the server distributes a configuration change, apply it consistently to every client.

A client that reports a different Forge profile, a different Minecraft version, or a different pack release should be repaired or reinstalled before you change server files. Matching the visible profile name alone is not enough if someone has edited its contents.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Choose self-hosting when you want direct access to every file and already understand port forwarding, backups, and uptime. Choose managed hosting when simpler provisioning, a web panel, and support are worth paying a recurring fee and giving up some control over the underlying machine.

Option Setup effort Control and maintenance Cost information in the published plans
Self-hosted computer Highest: install Java, the server files, firewall rules, router forwarding, and backup routines. Full file and configuration control; you handle uptime, updates, power, and recovery. No hosting fee, but you supply the hardware, electricity, storage, and network service.
Managed provider Lower: provisioning and network access are handled by the provider. Panel-based control and support, with provider limits and policies. Recurring fee varies by plan and can change.
CurseForge hosted-server flow powered by Shockbyte and billed by Tebex Designed for hosted setup, but verify that the selected service supports this 1.16.5 pack before paying. Provider-managed infrastructure; retain your own backups and confirm file access. Iron: $12/month, 4 GB RAM, 2 shared CPUs, 1–5 players; Gold: $24/month, 8 GB, 3 shared CPUs, 6–15 players; Diamond: $36/month, 12 GB, 4 shared CPUs, 16–25 players. Prices and availability are volatile.

The documented CurseForge “Join” shortcut is available only for game versions above 1.20.1, so it should not be promised for FTB Academy 1.16.5. For this older pack, expect to connect using the address and port supplied by the host in the normal multiplayer screen.

Backups, updates, and routine administration

Back up the world safely

Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. A live copy can capture region files while they are being written. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine and periodically test restoring it to a separate folder.

Update deliberately

Do not replace the server files simply because a newer FTB Academy release appears. Decide on a target release, back up the world, and have every player install the same client release before allowing connections. Keep the old server folder until the new installation has been tested.

Monitor the real bottleneck

Record memory use, startup errors, save times, and player count. If increasing the heap does not resolve lag, investigate CPU load, disk performance, network latency, or a problematic configuration instead of allocating all available RAM to Java.

Troubleshooting checklist

The launcher will not start FTB Academy

  • Confirm Java 8 is installed and selected for the launcher and profile.
  • Use the launcher’s Repair Installation option, then retry the profile.
  • Review Forge-specific troubleshooting information in CurseForge’s support documentation.
  • Move the installation out of OneDrive or another synchronised path if errors mention inaccessible or changing files.

The server installer fails or files cannot be written

  • Move the destination to a short, ordinary local path with no unusual characters.
  • Use a folder where the server account has write permission.
  • Do not run the installer inside a cloud-synchronised directory.
  • Re-download the official installer for the correct operating system and selected release rather than mixing files from another version.

A ZIP import says “Invalid File”

Check the archive contents. CurseForge’s troubleshooting guidance says the ZIP must contain a manifest.json file for that import method. If it does not, you may have downloaded a client export, an incomplete archive, or the wrong file type; obtain the proper server pack or use the official FTB server installer instead.

The server stops immediately

  • Verify that the process is using Java 8, not a newer or incompatible Java installation.
  • Run the generated start script from the server folder so its relative paths resolve correctly.
  • Read the first error in the console and the latest log before changing files.
  • Check that the EULA setting was completed and that the account can write to the folder.
  • Restore the original installer-generated files if a manually renamed Forge jar or edited library path was introduced.

Friends cannot connect

  • Prove that a local client can join first.
  • Confirm that the external firewall and router forward the port configured by the server to the correct host computer.
  • Check that the server is still running and listening after the router rule is applied.
  • Have every player verify the same 1.4.1 (or deliberately selected) pack release, Minecraft 1.16.5, and Forge loader.
  • Do not troubleshoot networking and mod compatibility at the same time; a client rejected for a Forge mismatch has not yet tested your port forwarding.

A client is rejected for a mod or loader mismatch

Compare the client profile with the server release, not just the profile title. Reinstall or repair the client profile, remove manually added mods, and make sure the server was generated from the matching official installer. Forge and Minecraft version mismatches are a primary compatibility failure mode for this pack.

Can you play with friends?

Yes. FTB Academy 1.16 supports multiplayer when one reachable server is running the pack and all players use matching profiles. The practical decision is whether one player’s computer and connection can provide reliable uptime, or whether a managed host is more convenient. Start with a local test, establish a backup routine, and only then invite external players. That sequence prevents router issues from hiding an installation or version problem.
