Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
To host Minecraft Academy 1.12, use FTB Academy 1.12’s dedicated server installer for the same release that every player installs, targeting Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. Keep the server in its own empty directory, complete the installer’s first-run instructions, and give players an identical client release. A client ZIP is not a substitute for the dedicated server files.
What “Minecraft Academy 1.12” refers to
The name commonly used in searches maps to FTB Academy 1.12, a beginner-oriented Feed The Beast modpack. Its quests and in-game guides introduce modded-Minecraft concepts rather than assuming that players already know how every mod works. The pack targets Minecraft 1.12.2 and uses Forge as its mod loader.

Feed The Beast’s versions page lists FTB Academy 1.12 releases including 1.1.0, 1.2.0, 1.3.0, 1.4.0 and 1.4.1. CurseForge separately identifies the 1.12.2 client archive FTBAcademy-1.1.1-1.12.2.zip. Those numbers are release identifiers, not interchangeable labels. Treat a different release as a different compatibility target unless you have verified that the server and client files are compatible.
The version combination that must match
| Component | Required value or rule |
|---|---|
| Game version | Minecraft 1.12.2 |
| Mod loader | Forge |
| Pack | FTB Academy 1.12 |
| Pack release | Use one release on the server and every client; do not mix release numbers casually |
| Server distribution | Use the official FTB Academy 1.12 server installer or server pack, not only the client archive |
Choose a release before downloading anything
Write down the exact FTB Academy release your group intends to play. The release number should appear in the FTB launcher or the download selection on the official FTB pages. Record Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge alongside it. This small record prevents the most common setup error: installing one release locally and downloading another release for the server.
#1 Best Overall
If players already have an established world, use the release that created that world unless you have a documented upgrade path. If you are starting fresh, select one release that is available both as a client instance and as a matching server download. Do not assume that the latest listed release is automatically compatible with an older client archive.
What you need from the host machine
- A machine on which you can create and write to a dedicated server folder.
- The correct FTB Academy 1.12 server installer for the chosen release.
- A network arrangement that allows the intended players to reach the machine, whether they are on the same network or connecting remotely.
- Enough storage for the generated server files, world data, logs and backups.
- The ability to follow the installer’s platform-specific first-launch instructions.
The authoritative pack pages used for this setup do not publish a pack-specific minimum RAM figure, Java version, or bandwidth requirement. Do not copy generic numbers from another modpack and present them as FTB Academy requirements. Start with the installer’s own guidance and observe the machine while the world is generated and players connect.

Install the matching client instance
Every player should install the same FTB Academy release as the server. Give the group one written release number and ask players to verify it before troubleshooting connection problems.
- Open the launcher that you use for FTB packs and create or select a dedicated FTB Academy 1.12 instance.
- Select the agreed FTB Academy release. Confirm that the instance reports Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge rather than a vanilla or different-loader profile.
- Let the launcher install the complete client pack, including its mods and configuration files.
- Start the instance once in single-player mode. This confirms that the client can load its own files before networking is introduced and creates any normal per-user folders the pack expects.
- Have each player record the release number shown by the launcher. A player with a different release should change the instance before attempting to join.
Keep this client instance separate from the server directory. A player’s saves, optional client-only settings and launcher metadata are not a dedicated server installation.

Download the official server files
Use Feed The Beast’s FTB Academy 1.12 Server Files page. Select the same release that you recorded for the clients, then choose the download appropriate to the host operating system and processor architecture. The page provides platform-specific downloads or commands and points administrators to the Feed The Beast Server Installer Guide.
Some downloads distinguish Intel/AMD systems from Arm systems. Choose the variant that matches the host. An installer built for the wrong architecture may fail before it creates a usable server, even when the pack release itself is correct.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Feed The Beast describes its modpacks as “server ready,” but that does not mean that a client ZIP can simply be renamed or launched as a server. The server distribution contains the files and installation logic needed for a dedicated instance.
Create an isolated server directory
Make an empty folder used only by this server. Examples include a folder named FTBAcademy-1.12-server inside a clearly managed game or services directory. Do not install into a player’s client folder, a temporary downloads folder, or a directory shared by another modpack.
Rank #3
- Create the empty server folder and confirm that you have permission to create and modify files there.
- Move the downloaded FTB server installer into that folder.
- Run the installer from inside the folder. Feed The Beast’s published instruction is to place the installer in the folder where you want the server installed and then run it.
- Allow the installer to download or generate the server distribution. Keep the resulting files together; do not scatter them across several locations.
- Read the files supplied with the installation, including any readme or server guide, before the first normal launch.
Isolation makes upgrades and recovery safer. It also lets you keep separate directories for separate releases instead of accidentally replacing a working world with files from another pack version.
Complete the first launch
The exact first-launch prompts depend on the installer and operating system, so follow the generated guide rather than copying a startup command intended for another pack. The normal sequence is:
- Run the generated startup script or launch entry once so the server can create its initial files.
- Read and accept the Minecraft EULA in the file the server creates, if the installation requires that step. Do this only after reading the license terms.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish creating the initial world and configuration files.
- Use the supplied startup script for subsequent launches instead of improvising a different command line.
- Stop the server cleanly through its console before copying, moving or backing up world files.
Do not copy arbitrary client-only mods, shader files or launcher folders into the server. If the official server pack supplies a particular mod or configuration, use that supplied file. The server and client must share the pack’s gameplay files, while some visual or interface-only client features may not belong on a dedicated server.
Give players the information they need to connect
Once the server has completed its first start, give players the connection address and the exact pack release. For people on the same local network, the host’s local address may be sufficient. Remote players need an address that is reachable from outside the host’s network, along with whatever network and firewall configuration the host requires. The details of that network configuration depend on the router, operating system and hosting arrangement; the FTB pack itself does not publish one universal procedure.

Before inviting a full group, test with one player whose client installation you can verify. This limits the number of variables if the first connection fails.
Client/server matching checklist
- FTB Academy release number is identical on both sides.
- Minecraft is 1.12.2 on both sides.
- Forge is the loader selected by the pack on both sides.
- The player installed the complete client pack rather than a manually assembled mod list.
- The host installed the dedicated server release rather than launching the client archive as a server.
- The server directory contains the generated world and configuration files from the first launch.
- The address supplied to players points to the running machine and listening service.
Troubleshoot the errors that matter most
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Missing-mod error | The client and server do not have the same pack release or one side has altered files. | Compare the FTB Academy release, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge. Reinstall the selected client release if necessary, and restore the server from its official server distribution. |
| Registry or channel mismatch | Mod or configuration files differ even though the visible release number looks similar. | Use a clean client instance and the matching server release. Do not copy individual files at random; replace the installation from the proper distribution. |
| Handshake failure | A loader, mod, or release mismatch prevents the login negotiation from completing. | Verify Forge and the pack release on both sides before investigating network settings. |
| Server will not start after download | The installer was run for the wrong processor architecture, in an unsuitable folder, or the first-launch instructions were skipped. | Check whether the host is Intel/AMD or Arm, move the installer to a clean dedicated folder, and follow the included server guide from the beginning. |
| Players cannot reach the server | The server may not be running, or the address and network path are not reachable. | Confirm that the console shows a running server, test locally first, then check the address, host firewall and network configuration. |
| A world behaves differently after an update | The world was opened with a different release without a verified compatibility plan. | Stop the server, restore a backup, and return both clients and server to the release that created the world before planning a controlled change. |
When asking for help, include the exact release number, Minecraft and Forge versions, whether the error occurs before or after the server is visible, and the relevant text from the launcher or server console. “FTB Academy 1.12 does not work” is not enough to distinguish a version mismatch from a network problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosting or managed hosting?
You can run the server on a machine you control or use a managed Minecraft host. The pack files and matching-release rule are the same either way; the difference is who operates the machine and network.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Cost pattern | No hosting subscription, but you provide the machine, electricity and network. | Recurring service cost; the provider supplies the server environment. |
| File and mod control | Direct control over the server folder and backups. | Control depends on the provider’s file access and supported Forge configuration. |
| Maintenance | You handle the operating system, installer, updates, backups and recovery. | The provider may handle infrastructure; you still manage the pack release and world. |
| Availability | Limited by your machine’s uptime and home network. | Usually designed for persistent availability, subject to the provider’s terms. |
| Capacity | Bound by the hardware and network you own. | Bound by the selected plan and its resource limits. |
| Network work | You are responsible for reachability, firewall and router configuration. | The provider generally supplies a reachable service endpoint. |
Choose self-hosting when you want complete control and are comfortable maintaining the machine. Choose managed hosting when persistent availability and reduced infrastructure work matter more than direct control. Before purchasing any service, verify that it supports Minecraft 1.12.2, Forge and the exact FTB Academy release you intend to run; the pack documentation does not establish a particular provider, price or uptime promise.

Change releases without destroying a working world
Do not “upgrade” by replacing a few server files while players continue using the old client. Use a controlled process:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server cleanly.
- Make a complete copy of the server directory, especially the world and configuration files.
- Record the current release and keep its folder intact so you can return to it.
- Install the new server release in a separate directory, using its dedicated installer.
- Install the same new release in a test client and open a copy of the world, never the only original.
- Check the supplied release notes or installer guidance for migration requirements before allowing the live group to connect.
- Only after the test succeeds, distribute the new client release and move the live server during the maintenance window.
A separate directory is safer than overwriting a working installation because it preserves a known-good rollback point.
Operational checklist for a reliable small server
- Keep a written record of the FTB Academy release, Minecraft version and Forge loader.
- Store the installer and generated server files in a dedicated folder.
- Back up the world while the server is stopped or by using a documented safe backup method.
- Test a client connection before announcing the server to everyone.
- Keep the server release and player releases synchronized after every change.
- Retain at least one backup from before any release change or configuration edit.
- Do not mix files from another modpack or another FTB Academy release.
Quick answer to the four common setup questions
How do I set up an FTB Academy 1.12 server?
Select one FTB Academy release, install that release for every client, download its official server installer, run it inside a clean dedicated folder, complete the EULA and first-launch instructions, and connect players with matching files.
Where are the FTB Academy 1.12 server files?
Feed The Beast publishes them on its FTB Academy 1.12 Server Files page. Select the release and platform that match your clients and host.
Which Minecraft and Forge version does it use?
The pack targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge.
How do I make the client and server match?
Use the same FTB Academy release number, Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge on both sides, and install the server from the dedicated server distribution rather than from the client archive.
