Mindustry’s official documentation does not publish a minimum RAM amount, CPU model, maximum player count, or hardware benchmark for a server. Instead, it documents how to run the standalone Java server, recommends a dedicated Linux or Windows machine, and identifies port 6567 on both TCP and UDP for the standard setup. Your practical requirements depend on the number of players, map and game mode, mods, server uptime, and whatever else shares the computer.
This guide explains what is officially known, how to size a host without inventing a false minimum, and how to choose between an in-game session, a home server, a Raspberry Pi, and rented infrastructure.
What Mindustry officially requires
The current Mindustry server documentation treats a dedicated server as a separate, headless program rather than a second copy of the normal graphical game. The documented method is to install a suitable Java runtime, download the server release, and start its JAR file from a terminal. The guide recommends a dedicated Linux or Windows machine for this role.

It does not state a minimum amount of RAM, a CPU generation, a supported core count, a maximum number of players for a given specification, or a measured memory and CPU profile. A number copied from another game, a generic game-server panel, or a community container is therefore not an official Mindustry requirement.

- Not officially specified: minimum RAM, minimum CPU, storage size, player-count limits tied to hardware, and performance benchmarks.
- Operational implication: choose resources according to your workload, then observe the running server rather than treating an unverified figure as a guarantee.
That distinction matters when comparing hosting plans. A plan advertising a particular amount of RAM may be suitable for your map and player group, but the Mindustry project has not published a universal threshold that makes one plan officially sufficient.
How to think about RAM and CPU sizing
Because there is no published baseline, sizing is a workload decision. Start with the smallest host that gives your intended session enough headroom, and increase resources when monitoring shows sustained pressure or when you add more demanding content.
Player count and activity
More connected players generally create more simulation, networking, and command activity than a private test session. Players who are actively building, fighting, or moving through a busy map can create a different load from players who are connected but idle. The documentation provides no player-count-to-hardware table, so treat any capacity number you establish as a result for your own configuration, not a project-wide promise.

Maps and modes can differ in the amount of terrain, units, factories, logic, and active entities they keep in the simulation. A simple map used by a few friends is a lighter planning case than a large, busy map with extensive automation. Test the actual maps and modes you intend to run when possible.
Mods and server-side content
Mods can add code, entities, assets, or mechanics that change both CPU work and memory use. A server with no mods is not a reliable proxy for a heavily modded installation. Record the exact mod set and versions when you evaluate capacity, because changing them can change the workload.

Other programs on the machine
A dedicated host is easier to size when Mindustry has reserved CPU time and memory instead of competing with a desktop session, game client, backup job, database, or other servers. If you share the machine, leave headroom for those processes and for the operating system. The official recommendation for a dedicated machine is guidance about isolation and availability, not a numeric hardware floor.
What to monitor
Watch system memory, CPU utilization, swap activity, Java process behavior, and network stability while a representative group plays. Sustained memory pressure or swapping points to a memory constraint; consistently saturated CPU or simulation delays point to a processing constraint. Network reachability and latency can fail even when CPU and RAM are comfortable, so monitor them separately.
No official Mindustry benchmark establishes how many players a specific CPU or RAM amount can support. Publish your own capacity statement only with the map, mode, mods, operating system, Java version, and player behavior that produced it.
Choose a hosting method
The right option depends more on availability, reach, administration, and privacy than on a single hardware number.

The official guide names AWS, Linode, and DigitalOcean as examples of cloud or dedicated hosting. Those names are examples in the documentation, not endorsements, price quotes, or a claim that any particular current plan is suitable. Compare a provider’s current region, CPU allocation, memory, bandwidth, storage, firewall controls, and recurring cost directly before renting.

Set up a dedicated Mindustry server
The following process follows the documented server-JAR approach. Exact package-manager commands vary by operating system, so use your distribution’s current Java instructions and the Java version supported by the server release you download.
- Choose a host. Use a dedicated Linux or Windows machine when you want continuous operation. For a home server, confirm that the computer can remain powered on and that your internet connection permits inbound connections.
- Install Java. Install a Java runtime compatible with the Mindustry server release. Verify it from a terminal with
java -version. If the command is missing or reports an incompatible version, correct that before troubleshooting the game server. - Obtain the server release. Download the Mindustry server JAR and place it in a directory reserved for the server. Keep this directory separate from unrelated applications so that saves, configuration, logs, and updates are easy to back up.
- Start the process. From that directory, run
java -jar server.jar, replacingserver.jarwith the actual filename. The server runs as a terminal process; keep the terminal available while you perform initial configuration. - Read the console help. At the server prompt, enter
helpto display the commands available in your release. Command names and options can change, so use the help output from the version you are actually running. - Host a map. Use
host <mapname> [mode], replacing the map name and optional mode with the values you want. Starting the JAR alone starts the server process; thehostcommand is the documented step that begins hosting a map. - Test locally. Connect from the same machine or local network first. Confirm that the map loads, players can join, commands work, and the server remains responsive before exposing it to the public internet.
- Keep it running safely. Use your operating system’s service or session-management tools if you need automatic startup and recovery. Apply operating-system and server updates during a maintenance window, and back up the server’s data before upgrades.
The command shown in the documentation is a pattern, not a promise that every release uses the literal filename server.jar. Use the filename of the JAR you downloaded.
Networking: port 6567, routers, and firewalls
The official setup says: “Make sure to allow port 6567 TCP and UDP.” Both protocols matter for the documented configuration. Allow the port in the host’s local firewall and, when the server is behind a home router, forward the relevant traffic from the router to the server’s private IP address.
For players on the same network
Test with the server’s local address first. A local connection avoids internet routing and helps separate a server or Java problem from a router configuration problem.

For players outside the network
- Give the server computer a stable private address, either through a reserved DHCP lease or a manually managed address.
- Create router port-forwarding rules for port 6567 to that private address, covering both TCP and UDP.
- Allow the same traffic in the host operating system’s firewall.
- Confirm that your internet service provides an address reachable from the public internet. Carrier-grade NAT or a blocked inbound service can prevent forwarding from working.
- Have an external player test the connection. Testing only from inside the same network can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
The server guide recommends consulting router-specific port-forwarding instructions. Opening a port exposes a service and can reveal your home public IP to players, so consider whether a rented host is preferable for your privacy and risk tolerance. Do not publish your home address or administrative credentials in server channels.
LAN or Steam hosting versus a dedicated server
An in-game LAN or Steam-hosted session is the simplest choice for a few people who can play while the host is in the game. It runs inside the game and ends when that game closes. It is therefore a poor fit for a world that should remain available while the original host is offline.
A dedicated server is a separate headless process. It can run without the graphical game client, can be administered from a terminal, and is intended for more resources or continuous availability. It also adds Java installation, updates, firewall configuration, backups, and access-control responsibilities.
Choose the in-game option when convenience and a short local session matter most. Choose a dedicated process when uptime, independent administration, public access, or a larger and more persistent session matters more than the extra setup.

The official FAQ says a dedicated server can run on a Raspberry Pi if the correct Java version is installed. It does not name a Pi model, specify RAM or CPU requirements, define a player limit, or guarantee performance for every map, mode, or mod set.

Use that statement as conditional compatibility, not as a recommendation to buy a particular board. If you already own a Pi, install the compatible Java runtime, run the same server-JAR procedure, and test the exact workload you expect. Check memory pressure, CPU utilization, storage health, temperature, and network reliability during a real session. A Pi that works for a light private server may not provide the same experience for a busier or heavily modded one.
Troubleshoot common failures
The JAR will not start
- Run
java -versionand confirm Java is installed and compatible with the server release. - Run the command from the directory containing the JAR, or provide the correct path and filename.
- Read the terminal error before changing hardware; a missing Java runtime or an incorrect filename is not a RAM problem.
The server starts but no map is hosted
Starting java -jar launches the process. Enter help and then use host <mapname> [mode] to begin hosting a map.
Local players can join, but internet players cannot
- Check both TCP and UDP rules for port 6567.
- Verify the router forwards to the server’s current private IP.
- Check the operating-system firewall and any provider-level firewall.
- Rule out carrier-grade NAT or an inbound block from the internet service.
The server becomes slow under load
Record the player count, map, mode, mods, Java version, and other programs running at the time. Observe CPU and memory rather than guessing from a generic requirement. Reduce competing processes or workload complexity, then move to a host with more available resources if the measurements show sustained contention.

The server disappears when the host leaves
That behavior is expected for an in-game LAN or Steam session. Move to a dedicated server process on an always-on computer or rented host when continuous availability is required.
Practical pre-launch checklist
- Java is installed and reports a version compatible with the server release.
- The server JAR is stored in a dedicated directory with a backup plan.
- You can start the process and use
helpat its console. - You have successfully hosted a map with
host <mapname> [mode]. - Local connections work before you attempt public access.
- Port 6567 is allowed for both TCP and UDP where required.
- Router forwarding targets a stable private address, if home hosting is used.
- You have considered exposure of your home public IP and account security.
- You have tested the intended map, mode, mods, and approximate player activity.
- You are monitoring CPU, memory, swapping, storage, and network behavior.
Bottom line on Mindustry server requirements
There is no official RAM or CPU minimum to quote. The defensible answer is to size for your expected players, map, mode, mods, uptime, and co-hosted software, then validate that configuration under representative play. For a short local session, the in-game host is simplest. For continuous or public operation, use the standalone Java server on a dedicated Linux or Windows machine, allow port 6567 over TCP and UDP, and handle routing, firewall, updates, backups, and privacy deliberately. A Raspberry Pi is conditionally supported with the right Java version, but the project publishes no model-specific capacity guarantee.
