To install a Mindustry server plugin, place its compatible JAR file in the dedicated server’s config/mods/ folder, restart the server, and check the startup console or logs to confirm it loaded. Plugins run on the server, so players do not need to install the plugin on their own devices to join. Configuration is plugin-specific; there is no established universal config.json for all plugins.
What a Mindustry server plugin does
A server plugin is a Java mod loaded by a Mindustry dedicated server. Plugins commonly add server commands or game modes. Because they run server-side, joining players do not need the same plugin installed on their clients.
That distinction matters when choosing what to install: this guide covers plugins for a dedicated server, not client-side mods. A plugin intended for a different Mindustry version may fail to load, so check the plugin project’s compatibility information before using it.
Before installing a plugin
- Get the plugin JAR. Use a release or build intended for your Mindustry server version. A source-code project is not necessarily a ready-to-install JAR.
- Check the plugin’s own instructions. Look for supported Mindustry versions, setup notes, and any dependencies or configuration steps the author documents.
- Know how you access the server files. On a self-managed server, use the file system or file-transfer method available to you. A hosting control panel may provide a file manager or a mod installer, but the available features depend on the host.
How to install a Mindustry server plugin
- Stop the dedicated server. Make file changes while the server is stopped so the plugin can be read on its next startup.
- Open the server’s
config/mods/folder. This is the plugin location. Make sure you are working in the server’s configuration directory, not a client installation or an unrelated folder. - Copy the plugin JAR into
config/mods/. Keep the JAR intact rather than extracting it. If the plugin’s documentation specifies additional files or a different procedure, follow those instructions. - Start or restart the server. A restart is required for the server to load the plugin; copying a JAR while the server is running does not by itself activate it.
- Check the startup output. Watch the console or server logs for plugin loading information or errors. Community guidance also suggests using the
modscommand to list installed plugins, if available in your server environment.
Where Mindustry plugins go—and what files they need
The server plugin folder is config/mods/. A plugin package also needs metadata describing the plugin, in a file named plugin.json or plugin.hjson. Its main class must extend mindustry.mod.Plugin.

For most server administrators installing a published JAR, these are package details to verify rather than files to create by hand: use the plugin’s release and instructions. The metadata and main-class requirements are especially relevant if you are building a plugin yourself or diagnosing a package that will not load. A JAR missing required plugin structure may not be recognized as a server plugin.
How to confirm that the plugin loaded
Check the console or logs during startup for the plugin’s load status. You can also try the mods command as a secondary check; community guidance recommends it for listing installed plugins, though command availability or behavior can depend on the server setup.

If the plugin appears to be present but its feature is not available, distinguish a load problem from a configuration or usage issue. Review the startup output first, then consult the plugin’s documentation for its commands, game-mode behavior, permissions, or other setup requirements. Do not assume every plugin exposes the same features or commands.
Plugin configuration: there is no universal config.json
Mindustry plugins generate and manage their own configuration. After the first restart, a plugin may create a dedicated subfolder or JSON file under config/ or config/mods/. The precise path and settings depend on that plugin, so consult its README or other documentation rather than looking for one fixed global config.json.

The official core API allows plugin developers to define settings with string, boolean, or numeric values. Creating a new Config instance adds it to the server’s config list. That API detail does not establish a shared configuration format or file path for administrators: follow the instructions for the specific plugin you installed.
Manual JAR copy or a host installer?

Regardless of installation method, the important checks are the same: the plugin must be intended for your server version, the server must load it, and its own documentation governs configuration. A panel’s presence does not guarantee that it supports every community plugin.

Troubleshooting a plugin that will not load
The plugin does not appear after restart
- Confirm that the JAR is in the dedicated server’s
config/mods/folder, not a client’s folder or a different server directory. - Make sure the server was restarted after the JAR was copied.
- Inspect the startup console or logs for a loading error. If available, check the
modscommand output as well.
The startup output shows a stack trace
A stack trace during startup can indicate a failure such as incompatibility between the plugin and the game version, but it does not by itself prove the cause. Check the plugin’s supported-version information and compare it with the Mindustry version running on the server. Use the relevant error details and the plugin author’s documentation to narrow down the problem.
The plugin loads, but its settings are missing
Check the plugin’s README and inspect the configuration locations it documents under config/ or config/mods/. Some plugins generate their settings only after their first startup; others may use a different plugin-specific file or subfolder. Do not create a generic config.json unless that plugin’s instructions explicitly call for one.

The plugin is installed, but players cannot use its feature
First establish whether the plugin loaded successfully. Then check its instructions for how the feature is enabled or invoked. Plugins commonly add commands or game modes, but the available commands and behavior are not shared across all plugins. Players ordinarily do not need a server-only plugin installed on their clients to join.
