Mindustry Server Config: Commands and Settings Explained

A Mindustry dedicated server is a standalone, headless Java process that runs multiplayer independently of the game client. You administer it from a terminal: launch the server JAR, use console commands such as host, and change persistent options with config. For an internet server, allow TCP and UDP port 6567 through the host firewall and forward that port from the router; without forwarding, the server is normally reachable only on the local network.

This guide covers installation, the complete administrator command set, configuration behavior, settings by purpose, and the connection problems that most often prevent friends from joining. Exact defaults can vary between Mindustry releases, so use config with no arguments on the running version to see its authoritative list.

What a dedicated Mindustry server is

A dedicated server is a separate, headless Mindustry process focused on hosting multiplayer. It does not require the graphical game client to remain open and can run continuously on a desktop, virtual machine, or other Java-capable host. Administration happens in the process terminal, where you can start a map, inspect status, moderate players, reload content, and alter server settings.

This is different from a local LAN game or a Steam-hosted session. A dedicated process is the appropriate choice when the host should stay online independently of one player’s game session. The server release and the clients joining it should be compatible; because command names and defaults can change, check the documentation and the server’s own help output after each upgrade.

Install and start the server

1. Install Java. Use a Java runtime supported by the Mindustry server release you downloaded. Verify that the java command is available in a terminal before proceeding.
2. Download the desired server release. Put its server JAR in a dedicated directory rather than mixing it with unrelated files. The directory is also where maps, logs, saves, and other server data may be written.
3. Launch the JAR. From that directory, run java -jar [server].jar, replacing the bracketed text with the actual filename. Do not type the brackets themselves.
4. Check the command interface. At the server prompt, enter help. With no argument it lists available commands; help <command> requests help for one command.
5. Host a game. Enter host <mapname> [mode]. If you omit the mode, it defaults to survival. If the map name is omitted, the server uses a random map according to the server’s host behavior.

On Windows, create firewall rules allowing both TCP and UDP traffic on port 6567, which is the port used in the documented setup guidance. A firewall rule only permits traffic to reach the machine; internet players also need router port forwarding when the server is behind a home gateway. Forward the same external and internal port to the host’s local IP address. Without forwarding, expect connections to work only for devices on the same local network.

Core console commands

The terminal accepts commands while the server is running. Use the exact spelling shown below; arguments in angle brackets are required values, while square-bracketed arguments are optional.

rules and config serve different purposes. Rules are gameplay rules applied globally to hosted maps. Configuration controls server behavior such as identity, access, networking, automation, and logging. Use status to confirm the server state after an operational change, and say when players need an immediate explanation of maintenance or a pause.

How the config command works

The command is intentionally self-describing:

• config prints the available configuration names and their descriptions.
• config <name> prints the current value of one setting.
• config <name> <value...> changes that setting.
• config <name> default resets the setting to its declared default.

Boolean parsing accepts on and true as true. off and other false-style values are interpreted as false, so use the explicit words on or off to avoid ambiguity. Numeric values are parsed as integers. Text values are stored as strings, and literal n sequences are converted to newline characters; this lets you enter a multi-line message from one command line.

After a successful change, the server invokes its settings save operation, so the value is persisted rather than being merely temporary. You can verify the result immediately with config <name>. If a value behaves unexpectedly, reset it with default, then set it again using the type and spelling shown by the server’s own help output.

Settings grouped by the job they perform

Identity and player discovery

Set the public-facing identity before inviting players. A clear name and description reduce mistaken joins, while an MOTD can communicate rules, restart windows, or contact information without changing the map.

Access and moderation

Use a whitelist for a private community, and consider strict mode when identity or position manipulation is a concern. Votekick is a community tool rather than a replacement for active moderation; keep an administrative path available in the server console.

Abuse and spam controls

These options limit unusually frequent network or chat activity:

• antiSpam automatically kicks and rate-limits spammers.
• interactRateWindow, interactRateLimit, and interactRateKick govern interaction frequency, the measurement window, and the kick threshold.
• messageRateLimit and messageSpamKick control message cooldown behavior and when excessive messaging results in a kick.
• packetSpamLimit limits packet flooding.
• uuidChangeLimit and uuidChangeTimePeriod limit repeated identity changes within a time period.
• chatSpamLimit limits chat spam.

These controls are rate-based rather than a single universal “security” switch. Tightening them can stop abuse but may also punish legitimate bursts, especially on a busy or modified server. Change one related value at a time and observe status, logs, and player reports.

Automation, saves, and uptime

Autosave retention and spacing are separate decisions: one determines frequency, the other determines how many historical files remain. Auto-pause saves simulation work during empty periods, while round extra time gives players a deliberate transition instead of an immediate map change.

Logging and diagnostics

Enable normal logging before troubleshooting. Turn on debug logging temporarily when investigating a fault, and watch file growth if you also increase command logging. Socket input adds another control surface; restrict it to the intended local address and port rather than exposing it unnecessarily.

A practical configuration sequence

1. Start the process and run version to record the server release.
2. Run config and save the names and descriptions shown by that release.
3. Set name, desc, and motd; keep the description within 100 characters.
4. Choose the listening port. If you keep 6567, allow both TCP and UDP on that port; if you change it, update every firewall and forwarding rule to match.
5. Choose access controls: enable whitelist for a private server, decide whether to allow custom clients, and set enableVotekick and strict deliberately.
6. Enable autosave, select retention and spacing, and decide whether autoPause fits the way your group plays.
7. Enable logging. Add debug only while diagnosing a problem, and set a sensible maxLogLength.
8. Run host <mapname> [mode], then check status. Use maps if you are unsure of an exact map name.
9. After editing map files or assets, use reloadmaps or reloadassets as appropriate. Do not assume a reload changes a game already in progress.

Why friends cannot connect

They are on the same network, but the server is invisible

• Confirm the server is actually hosting with status, not merely running at an idle prompt.
• Check that the client is using the host’s local IP address and the configured port.
• Allow both TCP and UDP through the operating-system firewall. A rule for only one protocol can produce inconsistent results.
• Verify that the server’s port setting matches the port entered by the client.

Local players can join, but internet players cannot

This pattern usually indicates router or perimeter networking rather than a Mindustry command problem. Forward the configured port from the router’s internet-facing interface to the server machine’s stable local IP, and permit the same TCP and UDP traffic in the host firewall. If forwarding is absent, the documented behavior is local-network reachability only. Some internet connections also use carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound forwarding even when router settings look correct; in that case, the network provider must offer a reachable address or an alternative overlay/VPN arrangement.

A port change did not take effect

Run config port and confirm the saved value, then restart or re-host as required by the release. Update the firewall rule, router forwarding, and client connection details together. Testing one layer at a time—server value, local firewall, router forwarding, then an external connection—identifies where packets stop.

Players are kicked or rejected unexpectedly

Inspect whitelist, allowCustomClients, and strict first. Then review antiSpam and the interaction, message, packet, UUID, and chat limits. Temporarily return a changed option to default and retest; this distinguishes a configuration threshold from a map, mod, or network fault.

Maps, mods, or assets are missing

Use maps all to verify that the server sees the map file, and mods to list loaded mods. After copying files into the server directory, run reloadmaps or reloadassets. If a plugin is present but behaving differently than expected, use mod <name...> to inspect it and check the server version before changing gameplay rules.

Managing changes safely

• Record the output of version, config, and dumpsettings before a major change so you can compare values.
• Change one setting or related group at a time, then verify with config <name> and status.
• Use default instead of guessing an old value when undoing a change.
• Keep autosaves and logs on storage with enough free space; maxLogLength is measured in bytes, while snapshot and rate-control settings use their documented time units.
• Review startCommands after upgrades because a command accepted by one release may change in another.

Because Mindustry releases can alter command names, parsers, and defaults, the running server’s help and config output should take precedence over copied settings lists. The stable approach is to identify the release, make a small change, verify it in the console, and align network infrastructure with the resulting value.
