Yes—Mina the Hollower supports gamepads on Steam. Steam lists full controller support for the Windows, macOS and Linux versions, and the game’s published control layout covers both Xbox-style and PlayStation-style pads. Movement can use either the D-pad or left stick; face buttons handle core actions such as jump, attack, healing and a sidearm, while shoulder or trigger inputs cover swapping and abilities. Steam Deck is marked Verified, so its built-in controls are the sensible starting point. An external Bluetooth or USB pad can work on Deck or SteamOS, but Steam’s compatibility record warns that you may need to select that device manually in Quick Access. The evidence supports choosing a controller you already find comfortable—not a particular model or a universally “best” stick-versus-D-pad layout.
Does Mina the Hollower support controllers?
It does. SteamDB’s configuration record lists full controller support and gamepad input for the Steam release. That record covers the Windows, macOS and Linux builds, so controller play is not limited to Steam Deck. The game is listed on Steam as developed and published by Yacht Club Games; Steam’s support page gives May 28, 2026 as the release date and links to the publisher’s support resources.
Controller support means the game exposes its actions through Steam’s gamepad layer rather than requiring keyboard emulation. A conventional XInput-style pad is a straightforward first choice because the published reference uses Xbox labels, while PlayStation labels are also documented. A different controller can still be suitable if Steam recognizes it and its buttons are comfortable for you.

Nothing in the available compatibility information establishes that one brand, model, thumbstick, D-pad, dead-zone value or custom layout is superior for every player. Treat the recommendation as a category decision: use the pad you already know, then adjust the binding or movement method if a particular action feels awkward.

What are the recommended controls?
The game’s action-adventure loop combines movement with jumping, burrowing and combat. A gamepad keeps those actions on physical buttons that can be reached without moving a hand between keyboard clusters. The following is the practical starting layout described by the published control guide from Shacknews. It identifies the type of input for each action and provides Xbox, keyboard and PlayStation equivalents; the exact labels shown by your current build should take priority if an update changes them.

D-pad or left stick: which should you use?
Both are explicitly supported for movement, so there is no evidence-based winner. The choice is about the kind of directional feedback you prefer.
Choose the D-pad when you value discrete directions
A D-pad gives a clear up, down, left or right click. That can feel predictable when lining up a jump, entering a narrow passage or making repeated short corrections. It is also useful if your thumb naturally rests on the directional buttons and you dislike the travel of an analog stick.

Choose the left stick when you prefer a relaxed thumb position
An analog stick lets you move from a neutral center position and may feel less tiring during longer exploration sections. Its circular range can be comfortable for players who already use a stick for most action games. That comfort is personal; the support listing does not measure precision or latency for either method.

Test both before remapping everything
- Start with the default movement input.
- Walk, jump and burrow in a safe area rather than judging the control during a boss attempt.
- Switch to the other supported movement input.
- Keep the one that makes short corrections and rapid reversals easiest for you.
- If another action is hard to reach, remap that action instead of assuming the movement device is at fault.
Can you remap Mina the Hollower’s controls?
Yes. The published controls guide says key bindings can be changed in the game’s settings. The exact menu wording can change with updates, so use the in-game controls or input section rather than relying on a copied path from an older build.
- Open the game’s main menu.
- Enter Settings and open the controls, input or key-bindings page.
- Select the action you want to change, such as attack, heal or ability.
- Press the controller button you want to assign.
- Check the displayed layout for conflicts, then apply or save the change if the menu offers that option.
- Test the new binding in a low-risk area before taking it into a difficult encounter.
A useful remap should solve a specific problem. For example, move an action you cannot reach while holding the direction you need, or separate two frequently alternated actions. Avoid changing every button at once: small, recorded changes make it easier to identify a conflict and return to the previous arrangement.
Keep a written fallback
If you experiment with several bindings, note the final arrangement or capture a screenshot of the settings page. This is especially helpful when switching between a desktop controller and a Steam Deck, because the physical button labels and Steam Input profiles can differ even when the in-game action names are the same.

Steam’s Deck compatibility metadata marks Mina the Hollower as Verified. The listing says the default controller configuration exposes all functionality, displays Steam Deck controller icons, uses legible interface text and performs well at the default graphics configuration. Steam’s listing states: “All functionality is accessible when using the default controller configuration.” That statement applies to the default built-in Deck configuration.

Start with the Deck’s integrated controls before adding a second device. This gives you a known baseline for button prompts and confirms that the game is receiving input normally.
When an external Bluetooth or USB controller is not active
Steam’s compatibility record identifies a specific SteamOS/Deck caveat: an external Bluetooth or USB controller may be connected but not become the active device automatically.
- Connect and power on the external controller.
- Open Steam Deck’s Quick Access menu.
- Open the controller or device-management area shown there.
- Select the external controller as the active input device.
- Return to the game and confirm that the on-screen prompts respond to that controller.
If the built-in Deck controls still operate after you select the external pad, check which device Steam marks as active and select the intended one again. This caveat is specific to the Deck/SteamOS setup described by Steam’s metadata; it should not be generalized into a claim that every Windows or macOS installation needs manual controller selection.

How to choose a controller without overbuying
Because the sources establish support for a general gamepad category rather than a tested model, evaluate a controller against the actions you will perform most often.
- Button recognition: Steam should identify the device reliably, and the game should show sensible prompts for its layout.
- Directional comfort: Decide whether the D-pad or left stick gives you better control over movement, jumps and burrowing.
- Face-button reach: Jump, attack, heal and sidearm all use face-button inputs in the published layout. Make sure you can reach the buttons without releasing movement.
- Shoulder and trigger access: The documented swap and ability inputs use the right-side shoulder/trigger area. Check that you can press them without shifting your grip.
- Connection method: USB avoids wireless pairing and battery management; Bluetooth reduces cable clutter but adds a pairing step and, on Deck/SteamOS, may require active-device selection.
- Remapping support: A controller is more useful if you can change a troublesome assignment in the game’s settings or Steam’s controller layer.
Do not treat a familiar Xbox-style or PlayStation-style layout as a developer endorsement. It is simply consistent with the published labels and the broad Steam gamepad support. Confirm the specific device’s compatibility with your operating system before buying; the available sources do not verify stock, a particular model or a manufacturer recommendation.
Troubleshooting controller input
The game does not respond at all
- Confirm that Steam recognizes the controller before launching the game.
- Reconnect a USB cable or repeat Bluetooth pairing, then restart the game.
- On Deck or SteamOS, use Quick Access to select the intended active controller.
- Test the built-in Deck controls to separate a game issue from an external-device issue.
Buttons work but prompts look wrong
Check whether Steam is presenting a different controller layout from the physical device. Use the game’s controls screen to identify the action name, then press the corresponding physical button. If the mismatch makes play confusing, select a compatible Steam Input layout or remap the in-game action while keeping a written record of the change.
One action is difficult to press during movement
Do not assume the controller is defective. The default face-button placement may simply conflict with your grip. Change only that action, test it in a safe area and keep the rest of the layout unchanged until the new placement feels reliable.
An update changed a binding
Reopen the in-game control screen and compare it with the dated Shacknews reference. Published mappings are useful orientation, but the current build is authoritative. Reapply a personal layout only after checking the new default assignments.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The available platform records and control guide establish gamepad support, the principal action categories and Steam Deck compatibility. They do not establish a preferred controller model, a measured accuracy advantage for D-pad or stick, a universal dead-zone setting, a controller preference survey or a developer quote endorsing one scheme. A review describes Mina the Hollower as a challenging action-adventure built around burrowing, jumping and combat, which explains why a physical gamepad is a relevant option; it does not prove that a particular pad is more precise or comfortable for every player.
