“Red tax” is a useful shorthand for the extra you may pay for a Milwaukee tool—but it only makes sense to judge it kit by kit. In one published comparison, the Milwaukee 2997-22 combo kit was listed at $399 and the Ryobi PBLCK01K at $199. The Milwaukee bundle also included higher-capacity batteries and a rapid charger, so the $200 gap is not a clean comparison of tool bodies alone. Whether that premium is worthwhile depends on your workload, what comes in the box, and whether you already own compatible batteries and a charger.
What the $200 price gap does—and doesn’t—show
Power Tools Insider listed the Milwaukee 2997-22 at $399 and the Ryobi PBLCK01K at $199, with prices stated as of April 2026. Those figures are historical context, not verified October 2026 offers; check the exact SKU and current retailer listing before buying. The comparison demonstrates a substantial listed difference between these two kits, not that every Milwaukee tool costs twice as much or that the premium is automatically unjustified. Compare what is actually in the kits
The listed bundles differ in batteries and charger as well as brand and tool tier. A kit price buys more than the drill and impact driver, and those included items affect the value—especially if you would otherwise need to purchase them separately.

| Ryobi PBLCK01K | $199, as stated by Power Tools Insider for April 2026 | Two 2.0Ah batteries, according to Power Tools Insider | Standard charger, according to Power Tools Insider; charge time not stated | Tool-specific hammer-drill status not established in the cited comparison. |
Battery capacity, measured in amp-hours (Ah), is one practical difference: the Milwaukee bundle includes higher-capacity batteries on paper. That does not by itself tell you how long either kit will run on your task. Runtime depends on the tool, material, workload, battery condition, and other factors; greater capacity can also mean a heavier battery. The source identifies charger types but gives no charge times, so don’t assume a particular difference in minutes.

When paying extra for Milwaukee may make sense
The comparison guide positions Milwaukee for users prioritizing professional performance and Ryobi for budget-conscious homeowners. That is the guide publisher’s assessment, not a result from independent matched testing. The evidence here does not establish that the Milwaukee kit is faster, more durable, or more reliable by a measurable amount.
Consider the premium if the kit’s specific tools and included batteries suit frequent or demanding work, and if you value the Milwaukee platform for tools you expect to add. Confirm that the exact kit has the functions you need—such as a hammer-drill mode if you will drill masonry—and compare weight, handling, and performance for your own tasks. A brand reputation or higher price alone cannot answer those questions.

When the red tax may not be worth it
If you are a homeowner with occasional light-duty jobs, a lower-cost kit may meet your needs. The cited comparison presents Ryobi as a budget-conscious option, but it does not independently prove that either kit is the better fit for a particular buyer. Match the tool’s capabilities to the work rather than paying for a tier you will not use.
Also account for batteries you already own. If you are invested in Milwaukee M18 or another compatible platform, a bare tool may cost less than another complete kit; if you are starting from scratch, compare the full kit, including batteries and charger. The effective cost of expanding a platform depends on the exact tools and bundles available, so check current listings rather than assuming one ecosystem will always be cheaper.

A practical way to decide before buying
- Write down the work. Identify the materials, frequency, and features you need, including whether hammer-drill capability matters.
- Match exact SKUs. Compare the tool models and kit contents, not just the brand names or colors. Check battery quantity and capacity, charger type, and whether the kit is complete.
- Check current prices. Look up the exact model numbers at retailers and compare today’s offers. The April 2026 figures above are not live October 2026 prices.
- Price your platform from here. Credit compatible batteries and chargers you already own, then estimate what the next tools you actually expect to buy will cost.
- Verify terms and fit. Confirm the current warranty and service terms from the manufacturer, and assess weight and ergonomics for the task. The cited comparison does not establish those terms or provide hands-on fit testing.
What can be concluded from this comparison
The Milwaukee 2997-22 and Ryobi PBLCK01K example gives a concrete reason to scrutinize a premium: Power Tools Insider’s April 2026 listed prices differ by $200, while the Milwaukee bundle includes higher-capacity batteries and a rapid charger. It is not enough evidence to declare Milwaukee overpriced—or better—for every buyer. Compare the complete bundle, your existing platform, and the current price of the exact kit you need.
