Store Milwaukee M18 and M12 lithium-ion packs at room temperature in a dry place, away from moisture and prolonged heat. You may recharge a pack after a partial discharge; it does not need to be run empty. Milwaukee says a full pack stops charging and charger electronics protect against overcharging, but its general practice is to unplug the charger and remove the pack when it is not in use.
For long-term storage, avoid temperatures above 120°F for extended periods. After about a year in storage, charge the pack normally. Exact instructions can vary by battery and charger model, so use the manual supplied with your pack whenever it differs from this general guidance.
Quick storage checklist for M18 and M12 batteries
- Keep the pack at room temperature when stored.
- Choose a dry location away from rain, condensation, standing water and other moisture.
- Avoid prolonged storage above 120°F; Milwaukee warns that permanent capacity loss can result.
- Do not use oil, solvents or liquid cleaners on the pack.
- Recharge whenever convenient after a partial discharge; do not deliberately drain the pack first.
- After about a year in storage, charge the pack normally.

What “room temperature, away from moisture” means
Milwaukee Tool’s battery FAQ says: “To maximize battery life, it is best to store batteries at room temperature away from moisture when not in operation.” The combined M18/M12 manual uses the same instruction: “Store battery packs at room temperature away from moisture.”

In practice, select an indoor location that stays reasonably stable and dry instead of a place exposed to weather or condensation. A damp shed, an area that regularly gets wet, or a location where water can reach the terminals conflicts with the manufacturer’s advice. Moisture can corrode terminals and can enter the pack if it is exposed to water or rain.
“Room temperature” is a qualitative instruction. Milwaukee does not establish a narrow ideal temperature band in the cited material, so there is no manufacturer-backed percentage, degree range or special storage mode to set. The 120°F figure described below is a high-temperature warning threshold, not a target or an ideal storage temperature.
Why prolonged heat matters
The M18/M12 operator manual warns that permanent capacity loss can result when packs are stored for long periods above 120°F. This is a warning about extended high-temperature storage, not evidence that one brief excursion above that temperature permanently damages a pack.
Do not treat 120°F as permission to store a battery anywhere below that number. Milwaukee’s positive recommendation remains room temperature. Avoid locations that can become much hotter than the surrounding room, such as enclosed spaces exposed to sustained sun or other heat sources. If you cannot keep the storage area reasonably cool, move the pack to a dry indoor location before storing it.
Because the manual does not quantify how many hours or days constitute “long periods,” do not convert this warning into a precise exposure rule. If a pack has experienced repeated or prolonged high heat and then shows a persistent fault, stop using it and follow Milwaukee’s service guidance rather than trying to repair or open the pack.
How long can an M18 or M12 pack sit unused?
Milwaukee states that its lithium-ion packs retain charge during storage longer than other pack types. The operator manual then gives a simple long-storage direction: “After about a year of storage, charge the pack as normal.”
“About a year” is an approximate manufacturer instruction. It is not a requirement to charge every month, every quarter or on another schedule, and the manual does not specify a target state of charge for putting a pack away. If you expect to use the pack sooner, charge it normally when needed. If it remains unused for roughly a year, connect it to the appropriate charger and charge it normally.

Keep the battery and charger manuals with your equipment. Model-specific instructions can differ, and Milwaukee directs owners to the applicable manual for operation, maintenance, storage and charging practices.
Can I charge a Milwaukee battery after only a partial discharge?
Yes. Milwaukee says its packs do not develop a “memory” from being charged after only a partial discharge. You do not need to run an M18 or M12 pack completely empty before charging it.
That makes partial charging the normal, practical choice: put the pack on its compatible charger when you need more capacity, even if it still has charge remaining. There is no manufacturer-backed reason in the cited guidance to perform repeated full-discharge cycles for storage or routine use.
Use the charger intended for the pack and follow its indicators. Do not disassemble the battery or attempt to bypass the charger’s controls.
Can I leave my Milwaukee battery on the charger?
Milwaukee’s FAQ says a pack stops charging once it is full and that charger electronics protect against overcharging when the pack remains connected. Milwaukee nevertheless recommends unplugging chargers and removing packs when they are not in use.
Those statements answer two different concerns. The charging system is designed to stop the charging process at full charge, but the manufacturer’s general practice is still to disconnect equipment after charging rather than leave it connected indefinitely. For routine storage, charge the pack, confirm the charger indicates completion, unplug the charger and remove the battery.
Milwaukee describes its chargers as communicating with packs to monitor cell voltage, temperature and charge status. That is the company’s description of the system; it does not replace the instructions for your exact charger and battery. If an indicator behaves unexpectedly, use the charger manual and Milwaukee service channels instead of assuming the electronics have resolved the problem.

What to do when a pack is too hot or too cold to charge
The combined manual shows that a rapidly flashing red charger indicator means the pack temperature is outside the charger’s charging range. The excerpt does not establish one universal temperature threshold for every M18/M12 pack and charger, so do not transfer a number from an older or different manual.

- Move the pack to a dry, room-temperature area and allow conditions to return to the range specified by that manual.
- Try charging again only as directed by the manual.
- If the indicator continues to show a fault after the pack is within the stated range, stop using the pack and contact Milwaukee service.
Do not heat, chill, immerse or otherwise modify a pack to force it into a charging range. The manufacturer’s guidance is to follow the applicable indicator instructions, not to impose a single threshold on every model.
Keep water, oil and solvents away from the pack
The operator manual says not to expose the battery pack to water or rain, immerse it, or allow fluid to enter it. Store it where leaks, splashes and condensation cannot reach the housing or terminals.
Milwaukee also warns against cleaning or lubricating the pack with oil or solvents. Solvents can make the plastic casing brittle and cause it to crack. Do not apply a generic electrical cleaner, lubricant or solvent as a routine maintenance step. If the pack has been exposed to liquid or develops a persistent fault, discontinue use and seek service rather than opening the housing.
No special storage case, cleaner or maintenance tool is identified as necessary by the cited Milwaukee guidance. A dry, stable storage location and the correct charger address the care steps the manufacturer specifies.

The combined M18/M12 manual covers the same fundamental storage direction for both families: room temperature and away from moisture. The high-temperature warning, long-storage recharge instruction, partial-charge guidance and precautions against water, oil and solvents apply as stated in that manual.
That common guidance does not make every battery, charger or indicator behavior interchangeable. Milwaukee tells owners to consult the manual for the exact pack and charger. Check the model information whenever you need a charging, temperature or fault instruction that is not covered by the general rules above.

If you need a replacement that accepts both battery families, Milwaukee lists the M18 & M12 Multi-Voltage Charger, model 48-59-1812, as accepting M18 and M12 batteries. Verify the model against your pack’s manual before buying; a replacement charger is not required simply to store batteries correctly.

1. Finish use and check the storage conditions
When you take a pack out of a tool, choose a dry indoor location that remains near room temperature. Do not put it where rain, condensation or other fluids can reach it, and avoid a location subject to prolonged high heat.

2. Charge according to need
You can charge after a partial discharge. There is no need to run the pack empty first. Use the charger specified for the pack and observe its indicator instructions.
3. Handle a temperature warning correctly
If the charger rapidly flashes red, treat that as an out-of-range pack temperature condition. Follow the exact charger manual, allow the pack to return to the permitted range in a dry room-temperature environment, and retry only as directed.
4. Disconnect after charging
Once the charger indicates the pack is full, unplug the charger and remove the pack when it will not be used. Milwaukee says the pack stops charging at full and the electronics protect against overcharging, while also recommending disconnection when idle.
5. Revisit very long-term storage
If the pack has been stored for about a year, charge it normally. The manual gives no more frequent universal interval and no required storage percentage, so do not invent one.

If a pack repeatedly reports a fault, will not charge under the conditions specified by its manual, or has been exposed to liquid, stop using it and follow Milwaukee’s service direction. Do not open the pack or attempt a solvent-based cleanup.

Which instructions take priority?
The guidance here comes from Milwaukee Tool’s battery FAQ and its combined M18/M12 operator manual, accessed October 13, 2026. Milwaukee’s FAQ specifically directs owners to the battery manual for operation, maintenance, storage and charging. If the manual for your exact pack or charger supplies a different procedure, follow that model-specific instruction.
Do not infer a precise storage charge percentage, a monthly maintenance schedule, a universal hot-or-cold threshold or a guaranteed life extension from the general statements. The manufacturer establishes room-temperature, dry storage; warns about prolonged storage above 120°F; permits partial charging; advises a normal charge after about a year; and recommends disconnecting chargers when idle.
