Cannabis can make you feel drowsy, but feeling sedated is not the same as getting restorative sleep. Current studies link recreational cannabis use with poorer sleep and more insomnia symptoms, while objective testing has found more time awake after sleep when cannabis is used close to bedtime.
The evidence is not uniform or proof that cannabis worsens sleep for every person. Effects vary with timing, dose, cannabinoid composition, previous use and underlying health conditions. No specific strain, edible, THC/CBD ratio or retail product has been established as a reliable insomnia treatment.
How common is cannabis use for sleep?
A National Center for Health Statistics report published in 2026, using 2024 National Health Interview Survey data, found that 3.7% of U.S. adults had used marijuana or CBD products most days or every day during the previous 30 days to help them fall or stay asleep. The estimate was 5.5% among adults ages 18–34 and 1.7% among adults 65 and older.

Those figures describe frequent use specifically as a sleep aid; they do not mean that 3.7% of adults use cannabis in any form or that every user has insomnia.

What does the sleep research show?
Observational studies find poorer sleep among current users
A 2025 meta-analysis of 102 observational studies associated current recreational cannabis use with poorer self-reported sleep quality, both short and long sleep duration, more insomnia symptoms and a later chronotype than non-use. Because these studies observe people rather than randomly assigning cannabis, they cannot establish that cannabis caused each sleep problem. People may use cannabis because they already have insomnia, anxiety, pain or another condition that affects sleep.
Objective testing found more wakefulness after bedtime use
The 2024 Colorado Cannabis Cohort study followed 177 healthy adults. Participants who used cannabis within three hours of going to sleep had an average of 60.5 minutes of wake after sleep onset, compared with 45.8 minutes among those who did not use it in that period. The associated rate ratio was 1.59. Their stage-1 sleep made up 15.2% of total sleep, versus 12.3% in the comparison group.

Why can cannabis feel helpful while sleep quality gets worse?
Subjective sleep onset and objective sleep continuity measure different things. Cannabis may make someone feel calmer or less aware of the time it takes to fall asleep. That perceived benefit can coexist with more awakenings, more wakefulness after initially falling asleep or a greater share of lighter sleep.

Can stopping cannabis cause insomnia?
Yes, sleep disruption can occur during withdrawal, particularly after frequent use. The National Institute on Drug Abuse lists insomnia, irritability and dysphoria among possible withdrawal symptoms, and its withdrawal checklist includes sleep problems and strange dreams.
NIDA’s official advisory-council summary states: “Among those with a cannabis use disorder, withdrawal symptoms may include insomnia, irritability, and dysphoria, and can prompt relapse.” A person may therefore resume cannabis because stopping makes sleep temporarily worse. That pattern can feel like proof that cannabis is necessary for sleep, even when the symptoms reflect withdrawal. It is a possible feedback loop, not a diagnosis of any individual.

Is there a reliable cannabis dose or product for insomnia?
No. The cited studies do not validate a particular THC/CBD ratio, strain, edible, inhaled product or dosing schedule as a dependable insomnia treatment. Products also differ in potency and composition, making results difficult to compare across studies or consumers.

- Does it shorten the time you feel it takes to fall asleep, and does objective testing show continuous sleep afterward?
- Does any short-term benefit persist, or does tolerance lead to more frequent or larger use?
- How strong and standardized is the evidence for the exact product and dose?
- Could next-day sedation or impairment affect driving, work or caregiving?
- Does the approach address an underlying insomnia disorder or another medical cause of poor sleep?
On the current evidence, cannabis has not been established as a reliable first-line treatment for insomnia.
How to evaluate your own sleep pattern
- Separate sleep onset from sleep maintenance. Record when you take cannabis, when you think you fall asleep, awakenings during the night and your final wake time. Feeling asleep quickly does not show that sleep remained consolidated.
- Track timing and frequency. Note whether use occurs within a few hours of bedtime, only occasionally or most days. Do not assume that a result from one timing pattern applies to another.
- Watch for withdrawal-related changes. If insomnia, vivid or strange dreams, irritability or dysphoria appear after reducing use, discuss the pattern with a licensed clinician rather than treating the symptoms as proof that cannabis is required.
- Review other contributors. Persistent insomnia can accompany anxiety, depression, pain, medication effects, breathing-related sleep disorders or irregular schedules. A clinician can assess these possibilities and discuss evidence-based options.
When to seek professional help
Arrange a clinical assessment if sleep problems persist, daytime functioning is impaired, you cannot reduce cannabis despite wanting to, or withdrawal symptoms are severe. Seek prompt help for suspected cannabis use disorder, dangerous next-day impairment or significant mood symptoms. A clinician can distinguish temporary withdrawal from an ongoing sleep disorder and create a safer reduction or treatment plan.
Bottom line
Cannabis may make falling asleep feel easier for some people, but current evidence does not show dependable restorative benefits. Frequent recreational use is associated with poorer sleep in observational research, and a 2024 objective study found substantially more wakefulness after near-bedtime use. Withdrawal can temporarily produce insomnia and strange dreams, reinforcing use. Treat cannabis as an uncertain, individual-dependent exposure—not a proven insomnia therapy—and evaluate persistent sleep problems with a licensed professional.
