Claude can help you plan a move away from WordPress, organize content, and review migration materials—but it is not a one-click service that transfers a live site. The right process depends on your destination platform and whether you need to move only content or also media, design, settings, and site functionality.
Can Claude migrate a WordPress site for you?
Not end to end. Anthropic’s documentation describes Claude’s general text and code capabilities and its CLI for querying Claude and processing piped content; it does not document a turnkey WordPress migration feature. Those capabilities can still help with defined tasks, but they do not establish that Claude exports a database, transfers media, configures DNS, checks redirects, or performs a production move. See Anthropic’s prompting documentation and Claude Code CLI usage.
Good uses for Claude during a migration
- Turn your site inventory into a migration checklist.
- Help map content fields or URLs once you know the destination platform and its supported format.
- Review code or export excerpts you provide, and help draft replacement copy or code.
- Organize pages and content that you supply.
Review generated mappings, code, and copy against the original site and the destination’s actual behavior. Claude’s assistance is not evidence that the site has been migrated or tested.

Start by identifying the destination platform and hosting arrangement. Then assess the site’s size, whether it is a multisite installation, its custom post types and fields, plugins, forms, commerce features, and URL structure. Those details determine whether a content import is enough or whether you need a broader rebuild or migration process.

These are different projects, not interchangeable ways to run the same export:
| Approach | What it can move | What it does not establish | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress content export and destination import | WXR can carry supported content such as posts, pages, comments, custom fields, taxonomies, and users. | A full copy of site files, configuration, design, plugins, or all media. | Whether the destination has an importer for WXR and which content types and fields it accepts. |
| WordPress-to-WordPress server move | With the relevant files and database copied, this can move a WordPress installation to another server. | Conversion to a different publishing platform. | Database credentials, domain or URL changes, and media URLs. |
| Destination-specific rebuild or migration | What the destination’s tools and migration process support; scope varies by platform and site. | Any universal field mapping or automatic preservation of WordPress behavior. | Supported formats, manual work, functionality replacements, URL handling, and validation steps. |
The destination’s importer and documentation determine what will actually carry over. The WordPress importer screen lists importers for selected systems, including Blogger, LiveJournal, Movable Type/TypePad, RSS, and Tumblr; the existence of an importer does not guarantee that every feature or layout converts. See WordPress Tools: Import Screen.

Know what a WordPress export includes—and what it leaves behind
In WordPress, go to Tools > Export to create a WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR) file. The export screen offers content filters and can include posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, custom taxonomies, and users. WordPress describes importing this file at another WordPress site; a different platform must support WXR or provide another compatible import path. See WordPress Tools: Export Screen.

WordPress’s WP-CLI documentation states: “WXR files do not include site configuration (options) or the attachment files themselves.” The export can reference attachments without containing the files themselves, and unattached Media Library items may not appear in the XML. Themes and plugins are separate as well. See WP-CLI export documentation and WordPress Learn’s importing-content tutorial.

- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
If you are importing into another WordPress installation, the WordPress Learn tutorial describes using Tools > Import > WordPress, then selecting Download and Import File Attachments. That option does not make unattached media part of the export. If you need a different theme’s original presentation on the new WordPress site, the tutorial says to install and activate that theme; a migration plugin may be needed to transfer an entire site. For a non-WordPress destination, check its own import and media-handling instructions.
Theme design has a separate export path
For a site using Site Editor theme customization, its export action downloads a theme ZIP containing templates, template parts, and style settings. This is separate from WXR and does not guarantee that another publishing platform can use those theme files. See WordPress Site Editor: Export.

Make a full backup before changing anything
Before migration work, back up the WordPress directory, images, plugins, other site files, and database. Keep a separate, verified backup rather than relying on the working migration copy. WordPress’s migration handbook says that when the database and URLs stay the same, a move to another server can often be made by copying the files and database. If database credentials change, update wp-config.php. If the domain or URLs change, follow the handbook’s URL-change instructions and check the resulting media URLs. This guidance covers WordPress-to-WordPress/server moves; it is not a universal conversion recipe for another platform. See WordPress Advanced Administration Handbook: Moving WordPress.
A practical migration sequence
- Define the destination and scope. Record the platform, hosting arrangement, site features, and whether you need content only or a complete functional replacement.
- Back up and verify. Save the site files and database separately from the working migration copy before making changes.
- Inventory what the site uses. List posts, pages, media, taxonomies, menus, custom fields, templates, plugins, integrations, and URL patterns. Do not assume WXR contains settings or all media.
- Choose the correct transfer path. Use content export/import only if the destination supports the content you need. For a WordPress server move, follow WordPress’s file-and-database guidance. For another platform, use its migration process and plan replacements for features it does not support.
- Use Claude for bounded tasks. Give it the destination format and a specific task, such as drafting a field map or reviewing a checklist. Treat its output as a draft to inspect—not as proof of a successful transfer.
- Validate before switching traffic. Check representative pages, images, forms, navigation, metadata, and destination URLs. If URLs changed, plan redirects appropriate to the old and new URL patterns.
What to verify depends on the destination
There is no universal conversion map or redirect plan without knowing the target platform, hosting arrangement, WordPress setup, plugins, and desired URL treatment. Before sending visitors to the new site, test the content and functions that matter to your site, not just whether an import completed. Confirm that important pages and media render, forms and integrations behave as expected, navigation works, metadata is present, and changed URLs have an appropriate redirect plan.
