Midgard Infra has announced plans for an approximately 200-kilometre subsea fibre cable linking Sweden and Finland as an extension of its Oslo–Stockholm route. The company says construction is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and service is expected in 2029. These are targets for a planned project, not confirmed construction or completion dates.

What Midgard Infra announced

In an announcement dated 8 October 2026, Midgard Infra, formerly Altibox Carrier, said it would extend its recently announced Oslo–Stockholm long-haul fibre route onward into Finland, creating a planned Norway–Sweden–Finland corridor. The Sweden–Finland crossing is the Finnish extension; the company is not describing the entire corridor as subsea. Midgard Infra’s announcement

Planned cable route and specifications

The company describes the subsea segment as approximately 200 kilometres long, with 144 fibre pairs. It says the route will land on the coast northeast of Stockholm and southwest of Finland, but has not named the landing sites. Its announcement describes a repeaterless cable, with active components located onshore, and says the system is intended to support high-capacity DWDM deployments and accommodate future optical technology. These are company-published design specifications and capability claims, not independently tested results. Midgard Infra’s announcement

Schedule and current project status

Midgard Infra says construction is scheduled to commence in early 2027 and that the system is expected to enter service in 2029. The announcement does not establish that permits have been issued, construction contracts awarded, or construction begun. Nor does it provide a detailed construction schedule. Treat the dates as company targets, not assured milestones. Midgard Infra’s announcement

Why the company says it is building the route

Midgard Infra presents the extension as a way to add route diversity and connect its planned Norway–Sweden route through to Finland. It says the design is intended to avoid common landing points, cables, and rights-of-way with incumbent systems serving Sweden and Finland. That is a design intention; the announcement does not independently demonstrate route separation or establish how the system would perform during an outage.

The company’s CEO, Svein Arild Ims, described the extension as necessary to make the corridor diverse end to end and said the unrepeatered crossing would keep active components onshore. His statement represents Midgard Infra’s rationale, not independent validation of resilience or customer demand. Midgard Infra’s announcement

Who the cable is for

This is a wholesale network project, not a consumer broadband service. Midgard Infra identifies carriers, hyperscalers, and data centre operators as prospective customers, and says it is discussing duct, IRU (indefeasible right of use), and leased-capacity arrangements. The announcement does not name customers or disclose signed capacity commitments, investment, or financing. Midgard Infra’s announcement

How it differs from other Sweden–Finland cable announcements

Several projects can be described as Sweden–Finland subsea cables, but their routes, schedules, and delivery stages should not be conflated.

Project Route and announced details Schedule and status qualification
Midgard Infra Finland extension Approximately 200 km; 144 fibre pairs; landings described broadly as northeast of Stockholm and southwest of Finland. Midgard Infra Construction scheduled for early 2027; service expected in 2029. Company targets for a planned project. Midgard Infra
GlobalConnect Sweden–Finland cable Separate route via Åland, with an approximately 150-km subsea segment and terrestrial upgrades. GlobalConnect’s July 2025 announcement Announced target was completion by the end of 2026; whether that target was achieved is not established here. GlobalConnect
