Heating food in plastic can release microplastics and nanoplastics under experimental conditions, but current evidence does not show that the levels detected in food pose a human-health risk. If you prefer not to heat leftovers in plastic, transfer them to microwave-safe glass or ceramic and follow the cookware and microwave instructions.
What the study found about microwaving food in plastic
A 2023 study in Environmental Science & Technology tested plastic containers and reusable food pouches with deionized water and 3% acetic acid, a food simulant. It compared microwave heating with refrigeration and room-temperature storage. Among the conditions tested, microwave heating produced the greatest release of microplastic and nanoplastic particles. Read the study.
In some tested conditions, a square centimeter of plastic released as many as 4.22 million microplastic particles and 2.11 billion nanoplastic particles after three minutes of microwave heating. These are experimental maxima for the samples and conditions in that study—not estimates of what a typical serving of microwaved leftovers contains. Refrigeration and room-temperature storage also released particles over the study’s six-month observation period. The polyethylene-based pouch released more particles than the polypropylene containers tested.

These are model outputs, not measurements of individual children’s exposure or evidence of harm. The researchers’ in-vitro cell tests likewise do not show that reheating food in plastic causes illness in people.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What those findings do—and do not—say about health
Particle release, human exposure, and demonstrated health effects are separate questions. The experiment shows that particles can be released from the particular products under its test conditions. Its particle counts and modeled estimates do not establish that an ordinary reheated meal delivers the same exposure, or that any such exposure causes disease.
The FDA says current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics detected in foods pose a risk to human health. The agency also says the health effects of particles reported in human samples are not sufficiently understood and that more research is needed. FDA: Microplastics and Nanoplastics in Foods.

Assessing risk is difficult in part because researchers lack standardized definitions, reference materials, sample-preparation procedures, validated detection and characterization methods, and quality controls. These limitations make studies hard to compare and constrain regulatory risk assessment. The FDA’s review of food-contact materials considers authorized uses, migration under intended conditions, and toxicological data; it does not promise that a microwave-safe label means zero particle release.
How to reheat leftovers if you want to avoid heating them in plastic
- Transfer the food. Put leftovers in cookware made for microwave use, such as a microwave-safe glass or ceramic dish. This is an optional way to avoid heating food directly in plastic, not a medically required measure or a proven way to eliminate all exposure.
- Check the dish and appliance instructions. Use cookware specifically manufactured for microwave ovens, and follow both the microwave’s instructions and the container’s use guidance. The FDA notes that microwaves heat food and that food can make its container hot; some plastic containers can melt. FDA: Microwave Ovens.
- Do not microwave food on melamine dinnerware. The FDA advises that foods and drinks should not be heated in melamine-based dinnerware in a microwave. It also says not to use plastic tableware to heat food or drinks unless it is labeled microwave-safe. These are cookware-use cautions; they do not mean ordinary microwave radiation contaminates food. FDA: Melamine in Tableware Questions and Answers.
What remains uncertain
The available evidence described here does not establish a typical microplastic dose from household leftovers, a health effect caused by reheating food in plastic, or a health benefit from switching to a particular container. The study tested specific containers, a pouch, food simulants, and storage conditions; its results should not be generalized to every plastic item or meal. The FDA’s position is that more reliable measurement methods and better evidence are needed to assess health risks.
