For Nintendo Switch 2 game storage, microSD Express is the supported choice; a conventional microSD UHS-I card cannot store or load Switch 2 games. An Express card can also be used in the original Switch, but it runs at the older console’s conventional microSD speeds. Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB.
How the cards compare on Switch 2
| Question | Conventional microSD UHS-I | microSD Express |
|---|---|---|
| Store or load Switch 2 games | No. It cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games. | Yes. Nintendo requires this standard for expansion-card storage. |
| Supported Switch 2 capacity | Not supported for Switch 2 game storage. | Up to 2 TB. |
| Use with original Nintendo Switch | Supported; Nintendo recommends UHS-I compatibility. | Also usable, at conventional microSD card speeds. |
| First use in Switch 2 | Cannot be used as expansion storage, but old screenshots and videos can be imported. | Requires an internet-connected system update the first time. |
| What it can store on Switch 2 | Cannot store Switch 2 games or save data. | Downloaded software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video. Game save data remains in system memory. |
Nintendo’s support guidance says Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards for this expansion-card use. A card’s conventional UHS-I or U1/U3 speed-class marking does not make it Express; check for the microSD Express designation and stay within the supported capacity.

What the speed labels do—and do not—tell you
UHS-I and microSD Express are different card-interface standards. The SD Association lists UHS-I SDR104 bus speed at up to 104 MB/s. Its SD Express figures describe interface ceilings using PCIe and NVMe, not the measured speed of a particular card in Switch 2. Real performance depends on both the card and host.
Nintendo says Express provides faster access than previous microSD card models and that the faster standard is needed to help games run smoothly. Nintendo’s cited support guidance does not publish a real-world Switch 2 card benchmark, so interface specifications should not be treated as promised load times or console throughput. See the SD Association’s bus-speed overview for the standards context.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
What an Express card can store
- Downloaded software, software updates, and downloadable content.
- Screenshots and captured video.
- Not game save data: Nintendo says saves stay in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to the card.
With a card inserted, Switch 2 uses it as the default location for downloaded software. Screenshots and video can be moved between system memory and the card. Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2, with some space reserved for system use; its data-management guidance says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play.
Can you reuse an original Switch card?
You cannot use a conventional microSD card from the original Switch to store or load games or save data on Switch 2. You can import screenshots and captured video from that card into Switch 2 system memory. An Express card works in the original Switch too, but the older console accesses it at conventional microSD speeds.
Rank #2
- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
If you later replace an Express card with a larger one, copy the data across. Nintendo recommends using one Express card; downloaded software spread over multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to check before buying or inserting a card
- Choose a card explicitly marked microSD Express. A regular UHS-I card, even one with a high speed-class rating, is not a Switch 2 game-storage card.
- Check the capacity: Nintendo supports Express cards up to 2 TB.
- For first use, connect Switch 2 to the internet and complete the required system update.
- If moving from an existing original Switch card, plan to import screenshots and videos; the old card does not become Switch 2 game storage.
Nintendo’s guidance says any card meeting the microSD Express standard and within the 2 TB limit can be used. The compatibility requirement and card marking matter more than a speed figure printed on a conventional card.
