Yes—microplastics in water can be chemically active. They may release additives and other compounds, change under sunlight and oxygen, shed weathering products, and produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) at their water-facing surfaces. The amount and type of chemistry depend on the plastic, its additives and age, water conditions, light, disinfectants and contact time. This does not mean every particle makes a poison or that human disease has been proven. It means the old “inert bead” model is incomplete and that exposure and treatment need to be evaluated by process, not by particle count alone.
What “chemically active” means
Microplastics are plastic particles generally discussed across a size range from 5 millimetres down to 1 nanometre in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency research. Chemical weathering and mechanical breakdown can turn larger particles into nanoplastics. A particle can matter in several different ways:
- It can contain additives that diffuse into surrounding water.
- It can carry chemicals from the environment on its surface and later release them.
- Sunlight and oxygen can oxidize its surface, producing new dissolved compounds and smaller fragments.
- Its surface or dissolved breakdown products can participate in reactions that form ROS.
These are different endpoints. Finding particles in a sample does not prove that a harmful chemical is present, and detecting a leached chemical does not by itself establish a health effect.

How microplastics release or make chemicals
Additive leaching and partitioning
A 2024 review of drinking-water studies identifies oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers and ultraviolet filters among the chemical classes that can leach from microplastics. Molecules move out of the plastic by diffusion and partition between the particle and water. Bisphenols may leach more readily than some other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, but rates vary substantially with the molecule, polymer and surrounding conditions.

Leaching is therefore real but not fixed. A fresh particle with one additive package can behave very differently from an aged fibre of the same nominal polymer. Concentration, particle surface area, pH and contact time all affect the measured amount. Chemicals can also sorb onto a particle from wastewater or natural waters and later partition back into the water when conditions change.
Weathering and photo-oxidation
Sunlight and oxygen attack plastic surfaces. The resulting oxidation adds oxygen-containing groups, makes the surface more brittle and can release dissolved organic carbon and smaller fragments. The United Nations Environment Programme’s 2023 assessment links solar ultraviolet radiation to plastic degradation, micro- and nanoplastic formation and accompanying leaching of potentially toxic compounds.

In a polypropylene photodegradation study, reported products included carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile compounds and dissolved organic carbon. In sunlit seawater experiments, polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene produced oxygen-containing dissolved-organic-matter formulas, evidence of photo-oxidation rather than simple physical crumbling.

Photoreactive dissolved organic matter
The dissolved material made from plastic is not chemically uniform. Experiments with polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) found polymer-dependent dissolved organic matter that generated reactive species under light.

Aromatic-polymer dissolved organic matter produced mainly hydroxyl radicals, while aliphatic-polymer dissolved organic matter produced mainly singlet oxygen. These species are short-lived and highly reactive; their presence shows that plastic-derived dissolved material can drive secondary chemistry in illuminated water, not that every water sample contains a harmful dose.
A newer finding: ROS without added light
A 2026 Nature study reported spontaneous ROS generation at commodity-microplastic–water interfaces without irradiation or an added oxidant. The proposed association was with surface hydrophobicity and interfacial electrostatics. This is distinct from light-driven photochemistry and is an important new mechanistic result, but it still needs independent replication and testing at environmentally realistic particle concentrations and exposure times.

Why one study finds more release than another
Results can differ without one experiment being wrong. The main comparison variables are:
| Variable | What changes |
|---|---|
| Polymer and additive package | Controls which oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers or pigments are available to leave the particle. |
| Particle size and shape | Smaller particles and fibres generally provide more surface area per unit mass; shape also changes contact and settling. |
| Surface age and weathering | Oxidized, cracked or biofilm-covered surfaces can have different sorption and release behaviour from new plastic. |
| pH and dissolved organic matter | Change chemical partitioning, surface charge, solubility and the fate of released compounds. |
| Light exposure | Can drive photo-oxidation and formation of reactive dissolved organic matter. |
| Disinfectant and oxidant exposure | Can accelerate particle degradation and chemical release; disinfection is not synonymous with chemical removal. |
| Contact time and concentration | Longer contact and more particle surface can increase cumulative release, although rates may slow as accessible compounds are depleted. |
| Analytical method | Detection limits, size cutoffs, sampling containers and contamination controls strongly affect reported particle counts and chemical concentrations. |
Do the particles, the chemicals or the ROS pose the risk?
They should not be treated as one endpoint.
| Endpoint | What evidence can show | What it cannot show alone |
|---|---|---|
| Particle presence | Plastic was detected under a stated method and size range. | That a toxic additive or disease-causing dose is present. |
| Chemical release | A measured compound or chemical class moved from, or was associated with, the particle. | That the concentration causes harm in people. |
| ROS generation | The interface or dissolved products produced reactive species under specified conditions. | That the reaction occurs at the same rate in every water system or reaches human tissues. |
| Biological toxicity | A cell, animal or other test system responded at a stated dose. | A definitive population-level causal estimate for drinking-water exposure. |
Reviews describe possible endocrine, hepatic, digestive, reproductive and nervous-system effects from microplastics and associated chemicals. The World Health Organization’s 2019 report found microplastics in treated tap and bottled water but identified major gaps in occurrence measurements, exposure estimates, toxicology and treatment performance. A 2024 review cited a global study reporting fibres in up to 83% of tap-water samples; that figure is method-dependent and is not a universal concentration for all tap water.

Does boiling, filtering or disinfecting make water safer?
No single household step can currently be claimed to remove every particle and every associated chemical.
| Action | What it may do | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Boiling | Can inactivate many microbes and may change some dissolved chemistry. | It is not established as a universal microplastic or additive-removal method; heating can also alter partitioning and does not undo chemicals already dissolved. |
| Point-of-use filtration | A suitably certified device can reduce particles within its tested size range. | Performance depends on membrane or media design, flow rate, maintenance and the test protocol. Particle removal does not automatically mean additive or ROS removal. |
| UV disinfection | Can inactivate microorganisms. | Ultraviolet exposure can also accelerate plastic photo-oxidation and chemical release, so disinfection should not be treated as chemical cleanup. |
| Chlorine or other disinfectants | Control pathogens in appropriately operated systems. | Oxidants may change plastic surfaces and increase release of some compounds; the outcome is process-specific. |
Drinking-water and wastewater reviews describe multiple removal approaches, but measurement challenges make universal household claims unreliable. If reducing exposure is a priority, use a point-of-use filter whose independent certification and test data specify the particle sizes and operating conditions it covers, replace cartridges on schedule, and avoid assuming that a “microplastic” claim covers dissolved additives.
What is established—and what remains unknown
Established enough to act on
- Microplastics can leach additives and other associated compounds.
- Sunlight and oxygen can create new, oxygen-containing dissolved products and smaller particles.
- Plastic-derived dissolved organic matter can generate ROS under light.
- A 2026 study provides evidence for a separate, spontaneous interfacial ROS pathway, pending replication.
- Water treatment can remove some particles, but performance depends on the process and the measurement method.
Still unresolved
- Typical concentrations and chemical mixtures in different regions and water sources.
- How much exposure comes from drinking water compared with food, indoor dust and other sources.
- Whether ROS measured in laboratory systems persist long enough, or occur at high enough rates, to drive effects in real distribution networks or the human body.
- Long-term health risks at ordinary environmental doses.
- Standardized methods for counting nanoplastics and measuring particle-bound versus dissolved chemicals.
The prudent interpretation is neither “all microplastics are harmless” nor “every particle is poisonous.” Particles and their weathering products can be chemically reactive and can release or generate potentially harmful compounds. Reducing avoidable exposure, improving treatment verification and closing the measurement gaps identified by WHO and EPA are justified while the health evidence develops.
