First check whether the microphone is missing from your computer’s input list or appears there but records no sound. If it is missing, start with its connection, mute switch, and system detection. If it appears, check that it is selected, that the app has permission to use it, and that its input level is not too low. A single failure does not prove the microphone is broken.
Start with the symptom: missing or listed but silent?
- Not listed in sound settings: Check the connection, pairing, physical mute, and whether the computer detects the device. On Windows, a driver problem may also prevent detection.
- Listed but silent: Select it as the input, check its input level and mute state, and confirm that the operating system and the specific app allow microphone access.
- Works in some apps but not another: The issue is more likely to be that app’s input selection, mute control, or—in a browser—site permission than a system-wide detection problem.
Use the instructions for your operating system below; Windows and macOS have different privacy controls and recovery steps.
Fix a microphone on Windows 11
Check the device and selected input
- Reconnect a wired or USB microphone. Check that its physical mute switch or button is off. For a headset, lower a boom mic if raising it mutes the microphone. For Bluetooth, confirm that the microphone is paired and connected.
- Open Settings > System > Sound > Input. Select the microphone you intend to use and check whether it appears in the list. Windows also lets you add a Bluetooth microphone from the Input section.
- Open the selected input’s properties and choose Start test. Speak normally, stop the test, and play the sample. If the recording is too quiet, raise the input volume and test again.
Allow microphone access
Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone. Enable access for the affected Store app if it is listed. Desktop programs are controlled by Let desktop apps access your microphone; they do not appear in the individual Store-app list. Microsoft notes that after a Windows 11 update, apps may need permission to use a microphone again (Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guide).

If the microphone still is not detected, open Settings > System > Sound and, under Advanced, run the input devices troubleshooter. If that does not resolve detection, Microsoft documents reinstalling the audio driver in Device Manager, restarting the computer, scanning for hardware changes if needed, and updating the driver. Follow Microsoft’s device-specific steps rather than downloading drivers from unverified third-party sites.

Check sound settings and privacy
Reconnect the mic, check its physical mute and Bluetooth connection if applicable, then open Sound settings to choose the intended input and test it. For privacy controls, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone and allow microphone access for the device, apps, and desktop apps as applicable. The exact interface can vary by update and device; Microsoft documents the Recording Audio troubleshooter and Device Manager driver recovery in its Windows microphone troubleshooting guide.
Understand Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That is a support-status date, not an explanation for a microphone suddenly disappearing or going silent.

Fix microphone permission problems on a Mac
If an app cannot record from a built-in mic, external USB microphone, or audio interface, check whether macOS allows that app to use the microphone. Quit the app before changing its permission, then reopen it and try recording again.

These permission steps are documented by Apple. If an external microphone or audio interface remains unavailable, check the device maker’s software updates and compatibility information. Apple’s guidance does not establish one universal procedure for selecting or diagnosing every Mac input device and macOS version.

If only one app or browser cannot use the mic
If the operating system can record microphone audio but one program cannot, check the affected app’s own microphone selector and mute control. For a web app, check the browser’s permission for that site too. These settings are separate from operating-system access.
For Microsoft Teams, check Settings > Devices or the meeting’s microphone dropdown and confirm the intended input is selected. Microsoft also advises checking Windows or macOS access, browser permissions when using Teams on the web, and hardware mute controls. If a Bluetooth microphone fails in Teams, confirm it is charged and not connected to another device. These are Teams-specific examples, not menu instructions for every app; see Microsoft’s Teams device-settings guidance.

When to try a separate microphone
Try a borrowed or separate USB microphone only after the connection, mute, input selection, permission, and—on Windows—troubleshooter checks. It can help distinguish a problem with the existing microphone from one with the computer’s input path, or serve as a workaround. Apple recognizes external USB microphones as Mac audio inputs, but that does not guarantee that every USB microphone works with every PC or Mac. Check the connector and the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before relying on one.
