Microcks uses API artifacts—such as OpenAPI and AsyncAPI specifications, GraphQL and gRPC schemas, Postman collections, and SoapUI projects—to generate mock endpoints and test deployed implementations. To use it well, provide useful examples, choose a runner that checks the right thing, and configure the target endpoint and any needed authentication. Microcks describes itself as an open-source, cloud-native API mocking and testing tool that can run on a developer laptop, on premises, or in a cloud.
How Microcks mocking and testing differ
Microcks treats specifications and testing files as artifacts. It uses their constraints and examples to build a knowledge base, generate mock endpoints, and run tests against implementations. A mock simulates an API for consumers; a test targets a deployed implementation through a Test Endpoint. These workflows use related artifacts, but they answer different questions: whether a consumer can interact with a simulated service, and whether a running service behaves as expected. See Microcks’ main concepts.
How to create a useful mock
Start with the API artifact
Microcks documents support for OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, GraphQL, gRPC schemas, Postman collections, and SoapUI projects. The artifact provides the API structure; examples supply concrete interactions that Microcks can use to build working mocks and tests.

For OpenAPI, include request and response examples that give the mock enough information to represent the interaction. Microcks’ OpenAPI conventions warn that input examples without corresponding output examples are incomplete and may be discarded. Review example coverage for the operations and outcomes consumers need to exercise.
#1 Best Overall
- Contains one (1) API FRESHWATER MASTER TEST KIT 800-Test Freshwater Aquarium Water Master Test Kit, including 7 bottles of testing solutions, 1 color card and 4 tubes with cap
- Helps monitor water quality and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and cause fish loss
- Accurately monitors 5 most vital water parameters levels in freshwater aquariums: pH, high range pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate
- Designed for use in freshwater aquariums only
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
Follow the AsyncAPI version’s conventions
AsyncAPI message examples supply mock messages. Naming rules depend on the specification version: Microcks’ documented 2.x convention requires example names, while with AsyncAPI 3.0 Microcks can compute a name from the message and the example’s position. Check the AsyncAPI conventions for the version in your artifact.
Choose the test runner by the check you need
A runner determines what Microcks actually validates. Select it based on the API or service type, the available artifact, and whether you need an availability check, schema or protocol conformance, or existing assertions to run. The current Test Parameters reference describes these strategies:
Rank #2
- Contains one (1) API NITRITE TEST KIT 180-Test Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Test Kit, including 1 bottle of testing solution, 1 color card and 1 test tube with cap
- Helps monitor nitrite and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately detects high nitrate levels from 0-5 ppm
- Prevents high levels of nitrite which inhibit fish respiration and suppress their immune systems
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
| Runner | What it checks |
|---|---|
| HTTP | Endpoint availability |
| SOAP | Response syntax against service schemas |
| SoapUI | Assertions or scripts in the SoapUI artifact |
| Postman | Assertions or scripts in the Postman artifact |
| OpenAPI | Example request results and schema compliance |
| AsyncAPI | Connects to a broker and checks consumed messages against the schema |
| gRPC/Protobuf | Result payloads |
| GraphQL | Responses against the API schema |
For example, use an availability-oriented check when the immediate question is whether an endpoint responds; choose a schema-oriented runner when conformance matters; and use Postman or SoapUI when the assertions or scripts in those artifacts are the intended test. A passing check only establishes what that selected runner validates.
Configure the test endpoint and scope
Before launching a test, make sure the Test Endpoint points to the deployed implementation and uses the syntax and protocol expected for that target. The test parameters reference covers endpoint configuration, operation selection, timeouts, credentials or OAuth2, and header overrides. Match those settings to the environment and the test’s purpose rather than assuming a mock endpoint is the implementation under test.
Rank #3
- Helps monitor and adjust ammonia level and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads ammonia 0 - 8 ppm (mg/L)
- Fish continually release ammonia and uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to water
- Use several times a week when starting a new aquarium then weekly or when problem arise
- Operation: Select the operation whose behavior you want to check. For event-based AsyncAPI tests, the documentation specifies one operation per test.
- Authentication: Configure credentials or OAuth2 if the target requires them.
- Headers: Add overrides when the implementation or environment expects specific headers.
- Timeout: Set it in line with the expected response behavior of the target.
Get started with a mock, then run a contract test
Microcks’ beginner tutorial demonstrates an all-in-one container distribution: import a sample API, then call its generated REST mock. It is a documented walkthrough, not a performance or compatibility guarantee. Follow the getting-started tutorial for the current procedure.
For implementation testing, the separate test tutorial describes launching contract tests from the UI or Microcks CLI against a chosen endpoint and runner. This keeps the mock exercise distinct from verifying a live implementation. See Getting started with Tests.
Rank #4
- Contains one (1) API SALTWATER MASTER TEST KIT 550-Test Saltwater Aquarium Water Test Kit, including 6 bottles of testing solution, 1 color card and 4 test tubes with cap
- Helps prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish and cause fish loss
- Accurately monitors 4 most vital water parameters levels in saltwater aquariums: high range pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate
- Designed for use in saltwater aquariums
- Use for weekly monitoring and when water or fish problems appear
Automate tests in a development workflow
Tests can be launched through the UI, API, CLI, or libraries. The Microcks API can also be used to launch tests, register mocks, and control configuration; its OpenAPI reference documents the API. This gives teams options for integrating checks into automation while keeping the test endpoint, runner, and artifact explicit.
For projects using Testcontainers, Microcks lists modules for Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Go, .NET, and Python. The feature matrix reports implementation status across capabilities including mocking, invocation checks, conformance tests, and asynchronous protocols. Coverage varies by module and can change, so check the current Testcontainers modules matrix for the language and protocol combination you intend to use.
