A Micro RGB TV is an LCD television with a backlight made of individually controlled red, green and blue micro LEDs. The LCD panel still forms the picture; the LEDs provide its light. That makes Micro RGB different from MicroLED, where each tiny LED is itself a light-emitting pixel.
What does “Micro RGB” mean in a TV?
“Micro RGB” describes the backlight, not a new kind of self-emissive pixel. Samsung’s guide defines its Micro RGB technology as using thousands of micro-sized red, green and blue LEDs behind an LCD panel. Samsung says the LEDs in its 2025 launch model were each under 100 micrometers and individually controlled.

In an LCD TV, the liquid-crystal layer controls how much light passes through each part of the screen to create the image. In Micro RGB, the red, green and blue LEDs supply that light. The term “micro” refers to the size of the backlight LEDs; it does not mean the TV has MicroLED pixels. Samsung’s Micro RGB guide and its August 2025 launch announcement describe the technology and its implementation.

How is Micro RGB different from MicroLED?
| Technology | How the image is made |
|---|---|
| Micro RGB | Red, green and blue micro LEDs provide a backlight; an LCD panel forms the image. |
| MicroLED | Each individual LED pixel emits its own light, so a separate LCD backlight is not used. |
The names are similar, but the display architecture is different. Micro RGB is an LED-backlit LCD approach; MicroLED is self-emissive. When comparing TVs, check the precise technology and model rather than inferring construction from the word “micro.”

How does Micro RGB compare with other LCD backlights?
Backlight arrangements differ across LCD TV families. Samsung describes conventional LED TVs as generally using blue LEDs with phosphor, its Neo QLED Mini LED TVs as using blue Mini LEDs and a Quantum Dot sheet, and its Micro RGB TVs as using red, green and blue backlight elements. These are Samsung’s descriptions of its own product families, not universal specifications for every TV sold under those broad labels. See Samsung UK’s 2026 Micro RGB product page for its current family information.
Which TVs use the Micro RGB name?
- Samsung: Samsung announced a 115-inch Micro RGB television in Korea on August 12, 2025. Its UK 2026 product page lists R95H and R85H models in listed sizes including 55, 65, 75, 85, 100 and 115 inches. The page also refers to 130-inch models introduced at CES 2026 and expected later in 2026; availability depends on the market and should be checked locally.
- LG: LG announced its Micro RGB evo LCD line for 2026 on December 16, 2025, naming the MRGB95 in 75-, 86- and 100-inch sizes. LG describes precision control of each RGB LED in the backlight, but the product remains an LCD TV.
These announcements show that the wording is not exclusive to one product family, but it does not establish that every manufacturer’s implementation is identical. LG’s announcement is available in its December 2025 press release.
Do manufacturer color-gamut claims apply to every Micro RGB TV?
No. Published color-gamut figures are claims about specific manufacturers’ products and should not be treated as a guarantee for the entire category or as an independent comparison.

- Samsung: Samsung’s 2025 announcement says its Micro RGB display achieved 100% BT.2020 color coverage and identifies VDE Micro RGB Precision Color certification. Its later guide describes the VDE-certified result as at least 100% BT.2020 color area. This is Samsung’s certification-linked product claim, not a category-wide result.
- LG: LG’s December 16, 2025 release says Intertek certified its Micro RGB evo product for 100% coverage of BT.2020, DCI-P3 and Adobe RGB. These are manufacturer-reported certification figures, not independent head-to-head test results.
Is a Micro RGB TV better than OLED?
There is no universal winner established by the available product information. OLED uses self-emissive pixels that can switch off to produce deep blacks; Micro RGB remains an LCD with an LED backlight. Those architectures are different, but a useful purchase comparison also depends on the specific TVs and how they perform.
Compare measured brightness, dark-scene contrast and blooming, color accuracy, viewing angles, glare handling, gaming refresh rate and features, screen size, price and warranty. The cited manufacturer pages do not provide independent head-to-head measurements or current street prices, so they cannot establish which technology is better overall. Samsung likewise frames the choice around viewing environment and use.
Quick Recap
What should you check before buying one?
- Confirm the exact model, screen size and local availability; announced products and sizes may not be sold in every region.
- Look for independent measurements of brightness, black levels, blooming, color accuracy and viewing angle for the specific model.
- Match gaming features and refresh rate to your console or PC needs, and assess screen glare in the room where the TV will be used.
- Compare the price, warranty and intended use with similarly sized alternatives. A technology label alone does not establish value or performance.
