For clearer streaming audio, set a sensible microphone input level first, then use EQ to address a specific sound you can hear—such as rumble, boom, or a lack of consonant clarity. Make small changes, monitor them, and review a test recording before going live. There is no universal “best mic EQ” curve: the right settings depend on your voice, microphone, placement, and room.

Start with the sound, not a preset

EQ changes the balance of frequencies; it does not fix every audio problem. First listen to your unprocessed voice and identify what needs attention. A low rumble or boomy sound may call for a low-frequency adjustment. If speech lacks presence, a carefully chosen upper-frequency adjustment may help. If the problem is background noise, level spikes, or clipping, EQ is not the right first tool.

Set a reasonable level at the microphone or audio interface, then check the signal reaching OBS. The OBS Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking the device signal and its level in OBS, then recording and listening back before streaming.

Try small, targeted EQ changes

Reduce rumble only if you hear it

A high-pass filter can reduce unwanted low-frequency rumble. An OBS community guide offers around 60 Hz as an example starting point, but that is not a universal setting. Your voice, microphone, and room determine whether filtering is useful and where it should be set. If the low end is not a problem, adding a filter may make the voice thinner without a benefit.

Adjust presence cautiously

If consonants are difficult to understand, an upper-frequency boost may make speech more present. One OBS community guide illustrates a high shelf around 2,000–2,500 Hz, with a broad bandwidth of 2–3 octaves and a 6–10 dB boost. Treat those values strictly as that guide’s examples—not as recommended settings for every streamer. A large boost can make a voice harsh, so use the smallest change that improves clarity.

These figures and examples come from the community resource “Better voice recordings”. They are starting points for listening experiments, not a measured formula for intelligibility.

Add EQ in OBS when you need it

OBS documents a VST 2.x Plugin filter, which can load a compatible EQ plugin. The OBS community guide demonstrates using ReaEQ through that filter. Plugin compatibility and setup can vary with the OBS release and operating system, so confirm that a plugin works in your installation before relying on it.

  1. Set and check the input level. Adjust the microphone or interface first, then inspect the audio source in OBS using the Audio Mixer Guide as a reference.
  2. Add a VST filter if you need detailed EQ. In the OBS source’s audio filters, select the VST 2.x Plugin filter and choose a compatible EQ plugin. The OBS Filters Guide documents the filter type; the community resource above demonstrates ReaEQ.
  3. Monitor while adjusting. Listen through headphones and change one control at a time. Keep an adjustment only if it improves the sound without adding harshness or thinning the voice.
  4. Record and review a normal speaking session. Listen to playback rather than judging only while changing controls. OBS advises recording a normal session and listening before going live.

A simple broad-range control may be enough if it can address the issue you hear. A parametric EQ in a VST plugin offers more targeted control, but it adds installation and configuration. If you cannot identify a specific problem or hear an improvement, extra processing may only add complexity. Verify the controls available in your installed version of OBS; the cited documentation confirms VST 2.x filter support but does not establish built-in EQ availability across OBS versions.

Use the right filter for the problem

OBS lists noise suppression, noise gate, expander, compressor, gain, limiter, and VST 2.x Plugin among its audio/video filters. They do different jobs: EQ shapes frequency balance, while noise suppression targets unwanted noise, a gate or expander controls quieter signals, and compression manages louder peaks. Choose a filter for the problem you can hear instead of stacking effects by default.

In its Compressor Filter documentation, OBS says a compressor is useful when a microphone at a normal level sometimes spikes much louder, such as during an impromptu shout. Compression can reduce those loud moments and restore level as the sound returns to normal. It does not replace good microphone placement or solve an unsuitable EQ.

The community voice guide uses the chain noise suppression, gate, EQ, then compression. That is one suggested workflow, not a rule for every setup. Listen to the result after each change; if processing makes speech less natural or introduces a new problem, reconsider the settings or remove the filter.

Keep the final signal below clipping

Check the meter at the end of the processing chain and listen to a recording. OBS warns that audio at or above 0 dBFS can clip and distort. Its Audio Mixer Technical Details describes −20 dBFS as an alignment level and −9 dBFS as its permitted maximum level. Those figures describe OBS’s meter convention; they are not a required target for every streaming platform.
