Low Rank and High Rank are quest and story progression tiers in Monster Hunter: World, not names for your Hunter Rank level. High Rank follows Low Rank and raises the challenge with new locales and more dangerous versions of familiar monsters. The Iceborne expansion adds a separate tier, Master Rank, after you meet its campaign requirements.

How Low Rank and High Rank differ

Progression tier What it means What to expect
Low Rank The earlier progression tier in the base game. Story advancement and Hunter Rank progression are linked during this stage, according to Game8’s Beginner’s Guide | How to Play MHW. Hunter Rank is a separate indicator, not another name for Low Rank.
High Rank The next challenge tier in the base game. New locales and monsters, plus more dangerous versions of familiar monsters. Capcom’s official game announcement says they hit harder and can take more damage before they go down.
Master Rank The rank tier associated with the Iceborne expansion. A separate campaign and quest category; Capcom’s event schedule distinguishes it from Low Rank and High Rank.

Capcom describes the High Rank transition in its official Monster Hunter: World Steam announcement. The announcement establishes the direction of the difficulty change, but does not give exact stat increases or multipliers.

When do you unlock High Rank?

High Rank follows the earlier Low Rank story progression. The sources available here establish that progression order, but do not specify an exact quest, cutscene, or Hunter Rank threshold that unlocks it. Treat the story’s progression as the guide rather than assuming a particular Hunter Rank number is itself the unlock.

What changes when you enter High Rank?

Hunts become more demanding

Expect familiar monsters to pose a greater threat: Capcom says High Rank versions hit harder and withstand more damage. New monsters and locales also expand the content available in this tier. The official description does not quantify these changes, so percentages or precise stat values would be unsupported.

#1 Best Overall
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Master Edition - PS4 - PlayStation 4 Standard Edition
  • Contains both Monster Hunter: World and the Iceborne expansion
  • Explore sprawling locales teeming with undiscovered creatures and thriving ecosystems
  • Battle fearsome monsters not only to craft new weapons & armor, but also to drive the story forward and uncover the mysteries of the New World and Hoarfrost Reach
  • Extensive single-player campaign that also allows drop-in multiplayer; use the SOS Flare to summon other hunters for an assist!
  • Use monster materials, as well as items found growing in the wild, to craft new items and gear

Equipment becomes part of the new progression phase

High Rank is also a new phase for equipment and quests. When deciding whether to replace a weapon or armor piece, compare its defense, the skills that suit your weapon and play style, and whether you can obtain the required materials. There is no single best set established for every player; useful choices depend on the hunt and the gear you can craft.

How Master Rank and Iceborne fit in

Master Rank is not simply another name for High Rank. It is the tier tied to Iceborne, and Iceborne is required for Master Rank event quests. To access the Iceborne campaign and quests, Capcom Support says you must complete the base Monster Hunter: World campaign and reach Hunter Rank 16. That Hunter Rank requirement is an access condition; it does not make Hunter Rank and Master Rank interchangeable.
