This spoiler-heavy guide covers all seven major Metal Gear Solid 4 encounters: Laughing Octopus, Raging Raven, Crying Wolf, Vamp, Metal Gear RAY, Screaming Mantis, and Liquid Ocelot. The key is to change tactics with each fight: use detection and camouflage awareness against Octopus, reserve heavy weapons for Raven, read Wolf’s tracking, and switch to the required tools for the later set pieces.
Set up before the boss fights
Konami’s Master Collection online manual lists five difficulty levels: Liquid Easy, Naked Normal, Solid Normal, Big Boss Hard, and The Boss Extreme. Solid Normal is the standard setting; The Boss Extreme unlocks after one game completion. If you are learning the fights, choose a difficulty that gives you room to practice and visit the Virtual Range to get comfortable with controls and weapon firing.
- Carry both lethal and nonlethal options when possible. The Mk.2 tranquilizer is especially important for the Beauty phases if you want their nonlethal rewards.
- Do not spend all your heavy ammunition before Raven or Wolf, where a heavy-weapon strategy can shorten exposure to danger.
- Keep the Solid Eye charged for fights that depend on spotting or tracking an obscured opponent, particularly Octopus and Wolf.
Some older walkthroughs use button prompts that may differ by release or controller. Follow the described action and mechanic, then check the controls for your edition for the exact input.

Find her through the camouflage
Equip the Solid Eye with night vision, the Mk.2 tranquilizer, and a reliable rifle such as the M4 Custom. Octopus hides among the interconnected research-station rooms using camouflage and disguises. Sweep the area with night vision and treat suspicious props or bodies as possible disguises. If she rolls toward Snake, climb onto furniture or otherwise get out of the roll’s path.

When the area is safe, collect ammunition and rations. The fight changes after Octopus’s armored Beast phase: once the exposed Beauty phase begins, use the Mk.2 rather than a lethal weapon to drain her stamina. The walkthrough associates mercy with the OctoCamo facemask. GamesRadar’s MGS4 boss walkthrough details the encounter, while Konami’s character archive identifies Octopus among the Beauty and the Beast members.
Act 3: Raging Raven
Manage the drones, then attack Raven
Bring a rifle or SMG to clear Raven’s drones, and reserve heavy ammunition such as the Javelin or RPG-7 for Raven herself. Keep moving between the tower’s ground floor and balconies to avoid missile attacks. Clear drones until Raven approaches, then switch to a heavy weapon. The Javelin is the longer-range choice; the RPG-7 reloads faster when she is close. Take another shot if the opening lasts long enough.
After the Beast armor falls, use the Mk.2 during the Beauty phase for the nonlethal outcome. The walkthrough says mercy yields the MGL-140 and a Raging Beauty facemask. Konami’s archive confirms Raven’s flight and UCAV support, which explains why it is important to watch the airspace as well as the drones.

Act 4: Crying Wolf
Use the terrain to locate her
Bring a sniper rifle, the Solid Eye with night vision, and the Mk.2. Learn the snowfield’s landmarks and remove nearby Haven Troopers where practical. Wolf can track Snake when he is downwind; the walkthrough says her perspective can briefly reveal her location. Use the landscape to infer where she is before she fires, then sweep the distant tree line and watch for the Solid Eye marker when your crosshair passes over her. A tower and full OctoCamo offer a patient vantage point. Monitor the Solid Eye battery, and shoot when Wolf emerges from her armor.
If you prefer an aggressive approach, the walkthrough suggests using the MGL-140 to knock Wolf down, land several shots, retreat to reload, and repeat. Keep recovery items available for this approach. In the Beauty phase, use the Mk.2 for the nonlethal reward: the walkthrough identifies it as the Rail Gun. Konami’s archive confirms Wolf’s armor and high-powered railgun.
Act 4: Vamp
Stop his recovery with the syringe
Vamp’s healing makes ordinary damage temporary. Shoot until he is incapacitated, move behind him, restrain him with CQC, and inject the nanomachine syringe. Shooting alone only knocks him down briefly.

Defend Otacon while he starts REX
After the duel, defend against the self-destructing Gekkos while Otacon starts REX. Use the Rail Gun to thin them out; the walkthrough recommends sheltering under REX and aiming near the top of their heads.
Act 4: Metal Gear RAY
Use REX’s weapons to create a leg-sweep opening
Snake operates REX against Liquid’s RAY. REX has guided missiles, a Gatling gun, a chemical laser, and a leg sweep. At range, charge the chemical laser for a direct hit, or use missiles when there is time to lock on. When RAY is weakened and an opening appears, dash in for the leg sweep and follow the special-action prompt.
Retreat behind buildings after the attack and repeat the pattern. Do not let RAY close in; sidestep or retreat if it charges. Button inputs can vary by version, so follow the on-screen prompt for your edition.

Act 5: Screaming Mantis
Break her control and use the puppet
Keep the nanomachine syringe and Mk.2 tranquilizer ready. If Mantis disrupts Snake’s aim, use the syringe on Snake to break her control. Tranquilize Meryl to stop her from becoming a danger to herself or Snake. Then shoot the strings attached to one of the puppets. Retrieve the doll when it falls and use it against Mantis; the walkthrough says this gives Snake control over her and ends the Beast phase.
Recognize the intentional screen fake-out
A black screen displaying the “Hideo 2” channel text is an intentional effect in this fight, not a system crash. Do not interrupt the game in response to that specific fake-out.

Win the close-range stamina duel
This is a stamina fight, not a conventional gun battle. Circle to manage distance, attack when Liquid Ocelot leaves an opening, and follow special-move prompts to deal substantial damage. Stay away from the edge of the deck. Learn the timing from his attack rhythm; the walkthrough gives this broad approach rather than frame-specific inputs.

Choose your approach by the fight

For the Beauty and the Beast encounters, the nonlethal choice applies after the armored Beast phase: switch to the Mk.2 to drain stamina. Lethal weapons may help end the earlier armored phase, but do not carry that approach into the Beauty phase if you want its nonlethal reward.
In Act 4, Vamp’s syringe fight and the REX-versus-RAY vehicle battle are separate consecutive set pieces. Treat them as different encounters: the first requires CQC and the syringe, while the second uses REX’s weapon-and-leg-sweep sequence.
