Mexican authorities seized a suspected cryptocurrency-mining site in Tlaola, Puebla, where news reports say they found 300 graphics processing units (GPUs), electrical equipment and satellite antennas. Investigators were examining possible electricity theft and whether the mining operation could have concealed illicit proceeds. Public reporting has not established that a cartel owned or operated the site, or that money laundering occurred.
What did authorities seize?
Reuters reported that the site inventory included 300 GPUs, 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite antennas. The Block, citing a September 6 Puebla government statement, also reported a transformer. Its account said federal prosecutors, the Mexican navy and state security officers took part in the operation.
The seizure took place in Tlaola, in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region. The inventory is reported by news organizations; the government statement cited by The Block was not independently available for review.

That has not been established. Authorities were investigating whether the mining operation drew electricity from infrastructure associated with a nearby hydroelectric system and whether cryptocurrency mined there might have been used to conceal proceeds from illicit activity. Those are investigative questions, not confirmed findings.

The reporting reviewed does not identify the site’s operators, name a cartel connected to it, establish that electricity was stolen, or report a final charge or court outcome. Reuters said the federal attorney’s office declined to comment because the investigation was active.
Why are investigators examining electricity and cryptocurrency?
Large-scale cryptocurrency mining requires substantial computing equipment and electricity. Reuters quoted Chainalysis Latin America specialist Caio Motta saying mining locations associated with organized crime may have access to cheap electricity or be in areas where operators can steal power and build mining infrastructure. His comments provide context; they do not prove how this particular site obtained electricity.

Reuters also quoted Mexico-based security analyst David Saucedo saying, “Drug cartels appear to have reached a new level of sophistication.” That is Saucedo’s assessment of a broader trend, not an official finding that a cartel ran the Tlaola operation.
Reuters described the site as the fourth similar crypto farm found in the area since early 2025, after three farms were reportedly found near a hydroelectric dam the previous year. The regional count does not show that the operations were connected.

What does the global illicit-crypto estimate show?
Reuters reported that Chainalysis estimated addresses it linked to illicit activity received $154 billion in 2025, compared with $59 billion in 2024. Reuters said much of the increase was associated with sanctions evasion. These are global estimates, not figures for Mexico, cartel activity, or the Tlaola site; they cannot establish the source or destination of funds in this investigation.
Motta also told Reuters that law enforcement agencies are becoming better equipped to investigate organized crime involving cryptocurrency. That observation concerns investigative capabilities generally and does not indicate that authorities have proved laundering in this case.

What remains unknown about the operation?
- Who operated or financed the site.
- Whether its electricity came from a hydroelectric system or was obtained unlawfully.
- Which cryptocurrency, if any, was mined, and whether mining proceeds were used to conceal illicit funds.
- The site’s power consumption, financial proceeds, and any eventual charges or court findings.
- Whether this site was connected to other mining farms found in the region.
