To move a Metro by T-Mobile number (the carrier formerly known as MetroPCS) to T-Mobile, keep your Metro line active, gather your Metro account number and transfer PIN, then start the transfer through the route for your order. If you qualify for Metro’s Smartphone Equality program, its published process is to call the dedicated migration team at 1-844-816-0783. Otherwise, T-Mobile’s general port-in options include checkout, T-Life, phone support for prepaid accounts, or a store visit. Eligibility and steps depend on the route you use.
How do I transfer my MetroPCS number to T-Mobile?
First, decide whether you are using Metro’s Smartphone Equality migration or T-Mobile’s general number-transfer process. Smartphone Equality is a specific path for qualifying loyal prepaid customers moving to T-Mobile postpaid; it is not established as available to every Metro customer. Confirm your eligibility and follow the instructions for your actual T-Mobile order.
Metro Smartphone Equality: agent-assisted migration
- Confirm eligibility. Ask Metro whether your line qualifies for Smartphone Equality and verify the current program terms. Metro describes this as a move from qualifying prepaid service to T-Mobile postpaid without a credit check.
- Request a Metro transfer PIN. In the myMetro app on your Metro device, sign in and go to Manage > select the line > Manage This Line > Request a Transfer PIN > Get a transfer PIN. Metro says this unique six-digit PIN is valid for seven days, so request it close to the transfer.
- Find your Metro account number. In myMetro, go to Manage > Additional Tasks > View Payment History, then choose View on a bill. The account number appears on the bill. Metro also says you can check Metro My Account statements or call support by dialing 611 from a Metro phone.
- Gather the destination and source details. Have your Metro phone number, Metro account number, Metro transfer PIN, and new or temporary T-Mobile account number ready.
- Call the migration team. For a new T-Mobile device, power it on and call 1-844-816-0783 from any phone. For a bring-your-own-device order with a new SIM, call after the SIM arrives. Give the agent the requested account numbers and PIN. Metro’s page says a new T-Mobile device has an eSIM.
- Finish the device setup. If your order includes a new physical SIM, insert it and power on after the call. Metro says the SIM auto-activates when the transfer is complete.
T-Mobile’s general port-in options
T-Mobile also lists other ways to start a number transfer: during online checkout, in the T-Life app, by phone for prepaid accounts, or at a T-Mobile store. Its general checklist asks for the number to move, current provider, account number, billing address including ZIP code, and transfer PIN or password. PIN requirements vary by source-account type, so request Metro’s transfer PIN for the route you are taking rather than assuming an ordinary account PIN will work.
Recommended Free Tools
For T-Life, T-Mobile’s published steps are: open Account > Check Number Transfer Status > Transfer a different number > Continue > Start Transfer. Select the temporary T-Mobile number, enter the number you want to move, check it, and follow the prompts. App screens and available options can change; Metro’s Smartphone Equality process has its own agent-assisted route. For prepaid service, T-Mobile lists 1-877-778-2106 to begin a transfer.

How long does it take to port a Metro number to T-Mobile?
T-Mobile’s current support guidance says a wireless line transfer typically takes 10 minutes to 3 hours. That is a general estimate, not a guarantee for an individual Metro transfer; accurate account details can affect completion. T-Mobile states that it does not charge for transferring phone numbers. If service has not switched after the expected window, check the Port-In Dashboard or contact T-Mobile Customer Care. T-Mobile lists 1-877-525-5833 for transfer-status questions; for the Smartphone Equality route, use Metro’s dedicated migration line.
What should I do before and during the transfer?
- Keep Metro service active until the port finishes. T-Mobile says the original provider account must remain active while the number transfers. Do not cancel Metro first.
- Back up contacts, texts, and voicemail. T-Mobile advises making a backup before starting; voicemail resets after porting.
- Be prepared for brief service overlap. T-Mobile says service may be active on both phones during a period of up to 24 hours. If you call 911 during that period, stay on the line because 911 may not be able to call you back.
- Check any lines you leave behind. T-Mobile says remaining lines with the previous provider may need to be canceled separately to avoid unexpected charges.
Which transfer route should I use?

Porting a number is different from transferring account ownership. This guide covers moving a number to T-Mobile service, not changing who owns or pays for an existing account.
