Short answer: the native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux is planned for October 29, 2026 worldwide (November in Japan). Deep Silver has announced a choice of true 4K at 60 frames per second or upscaled 4K at 120 frames per second, but those are targets rather than independently measured results. A television or monitor that supports 120 Hz is required for the 120 FPS option.

The update is free for existing owners. New buyers receive the updated version when purchasing either game. It is an enhancement of the Redux editions, not a full remaster or remake, and ray tracing is specifically excluded.

Release date, price and what owners get

The most recent publisher information, dated October 13, 2026, places the console update on October 29 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S worldwide, with Japan scheduled for November. Until that release occurs, statements about its resolution, frame rate and image quality describe announced specifications, not tests of a shipping build.

Existing owners receive the update at no charge

PLAION says the update is free for people who already own either Redux game. The announcement does not describe a separate upgrade purchase, paid edition or subscription requirement. If you buy Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux after the update, the updated version is included with that purchase.

Current editions before launch

Until the native release, the versions available on current consoles are backward-compatible prior-generation editions. Xbox Store listings identify both games as playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; the Metro 2033 Redux listing also identifies FPS Boost capability. The PlayStation Store lists Metro: Last Light Redux as a PS4 title playable on PS5 and warns that some PS4 features may be absent. Those listings should not be confused with the forthcoming native update.

A physical two-game Metro Redux package was documented at the 2014 launch, and Xbox listings show the individual games as well as a bundle. Current stock and prices are not established here, so check the store for your region and platform before buying.

Announced resolution and frame-rate modes

Deep Silver describes two output targets for the native update. The wording matters: these are publisher targets, not independent measurements of native resolution, frame pacing or stability.

Announced mode Publisher description Hardware requirement or qualification
Quality-oriented mode True 4K at 60 FPS Announced target; no post-launch measurement supplied
High-frame-rate mode Upscaled 4K at 120 FPS Requires a compatible 120 Hz television or monitor; announced target

What “true 4K” and “upscaled 4K” mean here

“True 4K” indicates the 60 FPS mode is intended to render at 4K output rather than reconstructing a lower internal image for that target. “Upscaled 4K” indicates that the 120 FPS mode raises a lower internal render to a 4K output signal. The announcement does not state the internal resolution, whether either mode uses dynamic resolution, or how often each mode reaches its target.

A 120 Hz display is necessary to show a 120 FPS signal. A 60 Hz screen cannot display the additional refreshes, even if the console is set to the high-frame-rate mode. The update announcement does not recommend a particular television or monitor model.

What has not been measured yet

No supplied source provides launch-build measurements for native or internal resolution, frame-time consistency, input latency, image reconstruction quality, drops below the target, or stability. There are also no separate measurements for Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5 or PS5 Pro. Treat any claim that one console already runs a specific resolution or frame rate in the new version as unverified until testing is available.

Graphics and rendering changes

The update adds higher-quality lighting, shadows and particle effects. Deep Silver also lists runtime hardware tessellation and displacement. These features can improve surface detail and scene complexity while retaining the visual direction of the Redux games.

It preserves the Redux identity

Deep Silver describes the project as an enhancement rather than a reconstruction:

“This is not a full remaster or remake – the original METRO Redux experience and aesthetic has been preserved – but we have made careful, meaningful improvements to take advantage of the latest PC and console hardware.”

That distinction is important for expectations. The update is intended to make the existing games look and run better, not to replace their art direction, level design or gameplay with a new interpretation.

Ray tracing is not included

PLAION Support answers the ray-tracing question directly:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Does this update include ray-tracing support? No, this is a much larger job that would require a deeper reworking of our render.”

Therefore, the announced lighting improvements should not be described as ray-traced lighting. They are raster-rendering enhancements within the updated Redux technology.

Platform-by-platform differences

The publisher has named several platform-specific technologies and controller features, but it has not published a complete mode matrix. The table separates documented features from details that remain unspecified.

Platform Documented update features Still unspecified
PS5 DualSense adaptive triggers; PlayStation power-saver mode Exact resolution behavior, frame pacing and image-quality results
PS5 Pro PSSR support; DualSense adaptive triggers; PlayStation power-saver mode Whether PSSR is used in every mode and comparative performance versus base PS5
Xbox Series X TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing support; spatial audio on Xbox platforms; Xbox impulse triggers; Xbox power-optimized mode Internal resolutions, dynamic-resolution behavior and measured stability
Xbox Series S Xbox platform features are listed, including spatial audio and impulse triggers No separate Series S resolution, frame-rate, image-quality or frame-pacing measurements

PS5 and PS5 Pro

PS5 Pro is the only console for which the announcement specifically names PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). That does not establish that PSSR is active in every output mode, nor does it establish a particular resolution or frame-rate advantage over the standard PS5. Both PlayStation consoles are associated with DualSense adaptive triggers and a power-saver mode in the publisher’s feature list.

Xbox Series X and Series S

Xbox Series X is explicitly associated with temporal super resolution (TSR) upscaling and anti-aliasing support. Spatial audio and impulse triggers are listed as Xbox-platform features, and the update includes an Xbox power-optimized mode. The announcement does not explain how those options map to each mode, and it gives no separate technical profile for Series S. Do not infer Series S settings from Series X specifications.

What Metro Redux contains

The Redux collection consists of two separate games: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. The first game was rebuilt in the 4A Engine. PLAION says that rebuild carries over gameplay improvements from Last Light, including changes to artificial intelligence, controls, animation and weapon handling.

The games remain distinct releases even when sold together in a bundle. The native console update applies to each Redux title, so owning one game qualifies you for that game’s update; owning the bundle covers both titles.

How the new modes may affect play

Choose 60 FPS when image stability matters most

The announced true-4K/60 target is the mode to consider if you prioritize the highest stated output resolution over refresh rate. It may suit a 60 Hz television or a player who prefers a more detailed image. Because no independent test exists yet, the update’s actual frame pacing and resolution behavior remain unknown.

Choose 120 FPS when responsiveness matters most

The upscaled-4K/120 target is intended for compatible 120 Hz displays. A higher refresh rate can make camera movement and controls feel more immediate, but the announcement does not provide input-latency measurements or guarantee that 120 FPS is sustained in every scene. The internal rendering resolution is also not stated.

Account for display and audio equipment

  • Confirm that the television or monitor accepts a 120 Hz signal before expecting the 120 FPS option to be useful.
  • Use a display connection and console setting that support the refresh rate; the game announcement does not specify a cable or television model.
  • If you use Xbox spatial audio or DualSense features, make sure your existing audio system and controller are compatible with those platform functions.

Historical performance context

A contemporaneous 2014 GameSpot report attributed launch-era claims to Deep Silver of 1080p on PS4 and 60 FPS on both PS4 and Xbox One. The report said Xbox One resolution was unconfirmed. Those figures describe the original PS4/Xbox One release period, not measured performance of the 2026 native update, and they should not be used to assign an exact current Xbox Series resolution.

Deep Silver’s 2026 announcement also says the Metro franchise has sold 50 million copies worldwide. That is a franchise sales milestone, not a performance claim about either Redux game.

What to check when the update launches

A useful post-launch comparison should test each console separately rather than treating “next generation” as one specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Verify the entitlement. Check that your existing digital or physical ownership is recognized and that the native PS5 or Xbox Series version is offered without a second upgrade charge.
  2. Record the selectable modes. Note the exact labels shown in the game and whether they differ between PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S.
  3. Measure output resolution. Determine whether the 60 FPS mode remains at its stated target and whether the 120 FPS mode changes internal resolution during demanding scenes.
  4. Check frame pacing and stability. Count sustained frame-rate drops, uneven frame times and scene-specific slowdowns rather than relying on the menu label alone.
  5. Compare image quality. Examine fine geometry, foliage, particles, shadow edges, motion and reconstruction artifacts on the same display.
  6. Test platform features. Confirm PSSR behavior on PS5 Pro, TSR and anti-aliasing on Series X, trigger effects, spatial audio and each platform’s power mode.
  7. Document Series S independently. Do not copy Series X results to the smaller Xbox console; its resolution and performance need their own measurements.

Bottom-line buying guidance before October 29

If you already own either Redux game, waiting for the free native update is the sensible choice because no separate upgrade purchase is announced. If you are buying now, purchase the specific PS4 or Xbox One/Series listing you want, knowing that the updated version is promised for buyers but that the native patch has not yet released at the October 13 information date.

Buy on the platform where you want to use its documented features: PSSR is named for PS5 Pro, TSR and anti-aliasing for Xbox Series X, adaptive triggers for PS5, and impulse triggers or spatial audio for Xbox platforms. Do not choose on an assumed resolution advantage, because comparative measurements are not yet available. Ray tracing is not part of the package on any listed console.
