Metropolitan-area Ethernet, usually called Metro Ethernet, is Ethernet-based connectivity delivered across a provider’s metropolitan network to connect two or more customer locations. It can link offices, branches, or campus sites so they communicate over an inter-site network rather than only through each building’s local area network.
What Metro Ethernet means
Metro Ethernet describes a network and service approach, not a single physical layout, speed, performance guarantee, or provider product. The California Department of Technology’s 2026 CALNET Category 23 specification defines its metropolitan-area offering as switched Ethernet point-to-point and multipoint LAN services that let customers connect two or more locations. California Department of Technology specification
The precise service depends on the provider’s design and the customer’s contract. A label such as “Metro Ethernet” alone does not establish the sites served, bandwidth, interface, routing arrangement, resilience, or service-level commitments.

Organizations use Metro Ethernet to connect nearby offices, branches, or other facilities to one another and to central network resources. Weill Cornell Medicine, for example, describes using Metro Ethernet to connect remote offices and clinical practices to internal resources and the Internet. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practical terms, the provider carries Ethernet service between locations across its metropolitan network. The connected sites can then communicate as part of an organization’s wider network, subject to how the service is configured.
How Metro Ethernet services can be structured
Point-to-point
A point-to-point service creates a logical connection between two locations. In the California procurement example, Ethernet Private Line (EPL) is specified as a logical point-to-point connection between two customer locations, or between a customer and certain provider locations. - 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Multipoint and virtual connections
A multipoint design can associate more than two locations. The same specification describes Ethernet virtual connections (EVCs) that associate two or more user-to-network interfaces. Its Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) service allows multiple EVCs to be multiplexed on one customer interface. These are examples from that procurement, not features guaranteed by every Metro Ethernet offer. California Department of Technology specification

What varies between providers and contracts
Do not assume that two services described as Metro Ethernet have the same technical design or commitments. The California procurement, for instance, specifies full-duplex Ethernet interfaces, VLAN tag handling, multiple classes of service, and monitoring requirements. Those are requirements of that contract, not universal properties of the term. California Department of Technology specification

- Which locations and geographic area the provider can serve.
- Whether the design is point-to-point or multipoint, and whether it supports multiple virtual connections on one interface.
- Interface types, bandwidth options, and committed information rates.
- Available service classes and which traffic receives differentiated treatment.
- How latency, jitter, packet loss, and availability are defined, measured, and bounded geographically.
- Resilience arrangements, monitoring, support, maintenance windows, and repair commitments.
- Whether the offer is a Layer 2 Ethernet service, an IP-routed service, or a bundle that includes managed routing.
These are comparison questions, not features implied by the name. Availability, pricing, and binding guarantees must be confirmed for the specific locations and contract.
How to interpret performance targets
Numerical targets belong to a particular service commitment, not to Metro Ethernet as a category. In its 2026 CALNET Category 23 technical requirements, the California Department of Technology states objectives for distances within 250 network miles: Priority class has one-way latency under 25 ms, jitter under 15 ms, packet loss under 0.5%, and availability above 99.99%; Premium class has one-way latency under 15 ms, jitter under 5 ms, packet loss under 0.1%, and availability above 99.99%. These are objectives in that procurement, not typical figures or guarantees for other providers or contracts. California Department of Technology, 2026 CALNET requirements
