Metro 2039 is an upcoming story-driven, single-player first-person shooter from 4A Games. Coverage currently lists a European release on 4 February 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The pre-order trailer presents a return to the series’ claustrophobic tunnels, scarce resources and psychological horror, but confirmed pre-order editions and pricing have not been published.

What is Metro 2039?

Metro 2039 is the fourth main Metro game from 4A Games, set in post-apocalyptic Moscow decades after nuclear war. Survivors live in underground Metro stations while an authoritarian regime controls tunnel society. The campaign is designed as a handcrafted, story-focused experience rather than a service game or competitive shooter.

The trailer and preview material point to a new protagonist, a faction called the Novoreich and a journey through both inhabited tunnels and the ruined surface. The tone is psychological horror: danger comes from hostile humans, mutants, darkness and the pressure of deciding how to spend limited supplies.

What the trailer shows about gameplay

Single-player campaign

Metro 2039 is described as strictly single-player. The available material does not indicate co-op, competitive multiplayer or an always-online requirement. Its pacing is built around authored encounters, exploration and narrative tension.

Stealth and firefights

Players can approach threats quietly or engage in direct firefights. That flexibility matters in a world where ammunition and equipment are limited: avoiding a battle may preserve resources for a later encounter, while open combat can be the faster choice when escape routes close.

Tunnel and surface exploration

The game combines enclosed Metro tunnels with semi-open areas and surface ruins. Tunnels provide the series’ characteristic confinement, faction politics and uncertainty around every corner. Surface sections broaden the spaces to explore while retaining environmental hazards and mutant attacks.

Weapons, equipment and scarcity

Preview coverage describes weapon and equipment upgrades. Upgrading therefore appears to be part of long-term survival rather than a purely cosmetic progression system. Resource pressure from mutants and hostile survivors is central to the design, although the available reports do not specify crafting recipes, inventory limits or upgrade costs.

How Metro 2039 fits the series

HOP.si’s August 2026 preview characterizes the project as a move back toward the slower exploration, limited resources and atmospheric storytelling associated with earlier Metro games. That positioning distinguishes it from shooters built around constant high-speed action. Expect deliberate movement through dangerous spaces, time spent reading the environment and encounters that reward preparation.

Can you pre-order Metro 2039?

The trailer is presented as a pre-order promotion, but a verified store listing, price, physical edition, digital edition or territory-specific bonus has not been established. Do not assume that a retailer page or payment option is legitimate solely because it uses the game’s name. Before ordering, check that the listing identifies the PS5, Xbox Series or PC edition you need, states the release territory and provides a recognized refund policy.

For now, the most useful search wording is “Metro 2039 PS5 game” when checking official platform stores or authorized retailers. Availability can change before launch, and PC storefront details remain unconfirmed.

What is still unknown

  • Exact worldwide launch timing beyond the reported European date
  • PC system requirements and supported storefronts
  • Edition names, prices, physical formats and pre-order bonuses
  • Whether the game includes accessibility options, photo mode or New Game Plus
  • Detailed performance targets such as resolution and frame rate on each console

These omissions are normal for a game still in development, but they are important when evaluating a pre-order. The confirmed picture is the campaign’s format, setting, broad gameplay loop and currently reported platforms—not final technical specifications or commercial terms.

Who should watch Metro 2039?

Metro 2039 is aimed at players who prefer a focused solo campaign, environmental storytelling and tension built through scarcity. It is a better fit for someone who enjoys choosing between stealth and confrontation, searching dangerous ruins and absorbing a slow-burn horror atmosphere than for someone seeking ranked multiplayer or nonstop arena combat.
