For Morgan Ufuoma, MetaTrader 5’s Python integration on Linux under Wine stalled at mt5.initialize() with (-10005, 'IPC timeout'). Ufuoma and the linked patch repository attribute the hang to an initialization-status handshake and describe an in-memory workaround. It is a build-specific patch, not a general Wine setting or a verified fix for every MetaTrader installation.
What caused the reported timeout?
In Ufuoma’s account, a headless MetaTrader 5 startup reached the Python call mt5.initialize(), then failed with (-10005, 'IPC timeout'). The debugging effort reportedly hooked Windows API calls made by the compiled Python extension and found repeated status-query traffic.
The wine-mt5-ipc-patch README describes the underlying issue as a state-machine deadlock: the Python client waits for the terminal to report that it is ready, while the terminal remains in initialization before symbol subscription. This is the author’s and repository’s explanation of their case; it does not establish a general Wine named-pipe defect.

The repository describes an in-memory Import Address Table (IAT) hook for ReadFile. For a specific 12-byte status response to opcode 0x6d, the patch changes the status byte from 0x01 (initializing) to 0x02 (ready) before the Python extension receives the response.

The README says to import the patch before the MetaTrader5 package. In the setup it describes, initialization reportedly took about 0.02 seconds with the patch, compared with a timeout after about 30 seconds without it. These are the repository’s reported results, not an independently reproduced benchmark or a performance guarantee.
Which builds and environments does it target?
The repository states a requirement of Linux with Wine 9.0 or later and says it was tested on Ubuntu 24.04. It also requires the official MetaTrader5 PyPI package installed inside the Wine prefix’s Windows Python environment.

The hardcoded IAT offsets target _core.cp311-win_amd64.pyd from MetaTrader terminal build 6230. The README advises inspecting the extension and confirming its current IAT RVAs before relying on the patch with another build. The named build and environment are not a compatibility matrix; the available account does not establish support across other terminal versions or user setups.
What should you check before relying on it?
- Confirm the target: Compare your terminal build and compiled extension with the build-specific target in the README. Do not assume matching Python package names mean the binary offsets also match.
- Recheck after updates: MetaTrader updates can alter opcodes or offsets. The README warns that the patch may need to change when the extension changes.
- Make failures visible: For production-critical use, the repository recommends guards and logging. A patch that silently alters a response without checking that it is the expected one can behave unpredictably if the binary protocol changes.
- Keep the scope in mind: The README says: “This targets the client-side IPC handshake only. It doesn’t touch order execution, account data, or anything broker-related.” That describes the patch’s intended scope, not independent proof of its safety in every deployment.
What does the author’s deployment establish?
Ufuoma describes running the setup in three isolated Wine prefixes with processes supervised by systemd on a Linux VPS. These are details of that deployment, not prerequisites for the workaround. The account reports a successful fix, but the available sources do not independently validate it across terminal builds, Wine configurations, or other users’ systems.
