Meta’s Muse is built to do more than answer questions: it can take actions across connected services, including finding deals, booking reservations and managing an inbox. That makes it potentially useful—and makes the permissions behind those actions matter. The “clever little bastard” framing is a joke about an agent’s reach, not a technical finding that Muse is malicious or secretly accessing everyone’s data.
What Meta’s Muse agent does
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can handle everyday tasks on a user’s behalf. GeekWire reported that Meta launched it on September 8, 2026, as a system for multi-step work rather than one-off chat responses. For example, a user might ask it to find a deal or book a reservation, then let it work through the steps involved.
GeekWire reported that Muse is available through iOS, Android, muse.ai and WhatsApp, with a free offering and paid subscription tiers. Those details can change, and availability may vary by location or plan; check Meta’s current product information before signing up. The important distinction is that an agent’s usefulness depends on what it can do through connected accounts and services, not only on how well it writes a response.

What safeguards does Meta say it uses?
Meta’s description, as reported by GeekWire, says Muse operates in a secure virtual machine with its own browser. It says Muse asks before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase, while a separate monitoring agent called Sentinel must approve actions sent to the internet.

These are Meta’s descriptions of its safeguards, not the results of an independent security audit. A virtual machine, confirmation prompt or monitoring system may be part of a security design, but those labels alone do not tell users exactly what information is accessible, how permissions are enforced in every situation, or how the controls behave in practice.
What happened with Messages access?
Inc columnist Jason Aten reported that Muse surfaced details from Messages on his Mac. He also said he found a sync containing 187,462 database rows, despite remembering that he had declined access. That is Aten’s reported experience; it does not establish that every Muse installation accesses Messages in the same way.
In a September 23 follow-up, Aten reported that Meta Superintelligence Labs head David Singleton said Muse does not monitor Mac notifications. Instead, Singleton said it syncs Messages database data when Messages access is enabled. He acknowledged that Muse had explained the feature incorrectly and apologized: “That’s on us.”

Aten said he still had not received an explanation for how the reported sync happened given the settings he recalled choosing. So the account raises a concrete question about whether Muse’s permission prompts and explanations match what users think they are allowing, but the cited coverage does not resolve the cause of the settings mismatch. Aten also reported, citing Sensor Tower data, that Muse had more than 2.5 million downloads as of his September 23 article; the figure is his report of that data, not a directly reviewed Sensor Tower publication.
Why Amazon objected to Muse shopping
GeekWire reported that Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com. Amazon said Muse was not authorized, did not identify itself as an AI agent while browsing, and appeared to capture and store customer credentials. An Amazon spokesperson argued that third-party purchase agents should operate openly and respect a service provider’s decision about whether to participate.
Meta’s account, also quoted by GeekWire, was different: Muse “has no visibility into people’s passwords or payment methods,” and credentials a user shares are stored securely so Muse can use them without seeing them. Meta has said that where a service lacks a public API, Muse may interact with it through a browser as a person would.

Those are competing company claims. The cited reporting does not independently settle what Muse could access in this dispute or establish its eventual outcome. The disagreement highlights a practical issue for any shopping agent: a user’s authorization to act does not necessarily mean a website has agreed to let the agent browse or make purchases there.
What to check before connecting accounts
Before enabling an agent, focus on the particular access and actions it needs—not just the convenience of the task. In the app’s current settings and permission prompts, check:
- Which services and local information it can access, including messages, email and calendars.
- What each permission enables, and whether access can be limited or revoked later.
- Which actions require your approval, especially sending messages, placing orders or making payments.
- How it identifies itself when interacting with websites, and whether a service permits that kind of automated access.
- Which safeguards are documented by the provider and which, if any, have been independently tested.
Read the prompt for the specific account or data source rather than assuming that declining one permission rules out all related access. If an explanation is unclear, pause before connecting the account; the Messages incident shows why a user’s understanding of a permission is part of the trust decision.

What is Muse Charm, and can you buy it?
Meta’s product page calls Muse Charm “The first device made for Muse, your personal AI agent.” The page invites visitors to sign up for availability news, but it does not provide a price, sale date or retailer listing. That establishes an announced device, not a confirmed retail launch or Amazon listing.
Can you trust Muse?
The available evidence supports neither a blanket assurance nor a claim that Muse secretly reads everyone’s data. Meta describes safeguards and an agent designed to act across services; Aten reported an unexpected Messages sync and an incorrect explanation from Muse, while the explanation for his settings mismatch remained unresolved in his coverage. Amazon and Meta have also offered conflicting accounts of Muse’s access and credentials during shopping.

For a prospective user, trust comes down to the access being requested, the actions requiring approval, and whether those controls are clear enough to understand before connecting an account. Muse may be clever precisely because it can act. That same capability makes its boundaries more important than a polished chat response.
