Start with Persona 5 Royal if you want contemporary Tokyo, school-life routines, a large social simulation and the Phantom Thieves. Start with Metaphor: ReFantazio if you want a fantasy journey, a political succession story and a newer standalone take on ATLUS’s calendar, relationships and turn-based combat. You do not need to play Persona 5 to understand Metaphor, so the best order is the one that matches the setting and cast you want right now.
The short answer
Both games are substantial, turn-based role-playing games built around party development, relationships and making meaningful choices with limited in-game time. Their shared design lineage is real: ATLUS’s official Metaphor material identifies its team as the creators of Persona 3, Persona 4 and Persona 5. That makes the games feel related without making them chapters in one story.
| If you want… | Play first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A contemporary Tokyo school setting | Persona 5 Royal | School days, friendships and the Phantom Thieves are the central fantasy. |
| A fantasy world and political journey | Metaphor: ReFantazio | Its story moves through a new fantasy realm and a succession conflict. |
| The clearest introduction to ATLUS’s social-simulation format | Persona 5 Royal | Its confidants, daily schedule and dual-life premise make the structure especially prominent. |
| A newer, standalone RPG identity | Metaphor: ReFantazio | It carries forward familiar ideas through the Archetype system and fantasy presentation. |
There is no required play order. Persona 5 first can make ATLUS’s calendar and relationship design feel familiar; Metaphor first lets you experience the fantasy setting without expectations from an earlier game.

What each game is
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Metaphor: ReFantazio is ATLUS Studio Zero’s fantasy RPG. SEGA’s launch announcement dated its release to October 11, 2024 and described the project as a move from Persona’s modern setting into the realm of classic fantasy. The premise therefore changes more than the scenery: the game uses a journey through an unfamiliar world and a political succession story as the frame for its characters, relationships and battles.

Its main mechanical identity is the Archetype system. Rather than presenting the adventure as a modern school-and-city routine, Metaphor expresses party roles and progression through a fantasy vocabulary. You still plan days, develop relationships and make tactical choices in turn-based fights, but those activities serve a political road story rather than a Tokyo school drama.
Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 is ATLUS’s modern-day school-life RPG. ATLUS describes it as the story of the internal and external conflicts of troubled high school students who live dual lives as Phantom Thieves. That double existence defines the game’s rhythm: ordinary school and social life sits beside a stylish supernatural mission structure.
When this guide recommends Persona 5 Royal, it is recommending the Royal edition as the version to seek out if you choose the Persona route. The comparison here concerns the Persona 5 experience described by ATLUS: its contemporary setting, school-centered routine, confidant relationships, Personas and Phantom Thieves framework.

Persona 5 Royal’s contemporary Tokyo
Persona 5 Royal is the better first choice if the appeal of a recognizable modern city matters to you. You spend your time in a contemporary Tokyo school environment, balancing classes and personal connections with the hidden life of the Phantom Thieves. The contrast between mundane obligations and stylish rebellion is not background decoration; it is the premise that organizes the game.
Choose it when you want character interactions to feel grounded in school schedules, urban routines and a tightly defined ensemble. Its tone combines youthful pressure, social anxiety and dramatic resistance, so the setting will suit you if you prefer stories that begin in a world close to your own before adding supernatural stakes.
Metaphor’s fantasy and succession conflict
Metaphor is the stronger choice if you want to leave the modern world immediately. Its fantasy realm, journey structure and political succession story provide a different kind of momentum. You are not primarily watching students divide their time between school and secret missions; you are following a party whose travel is tied to the future of a kingdom and the struggle to determine its next leader.
Choose Metaphor when world-building, political tension and a classic fantasy atmosphere sound more attractive than urban realism. Its premise gives relationships and daily planning a different emotional context: companions meet and travel through a contested world rather than sharing a school-life routine.
How the tone affects your first hours
The first game should match the fiction you are most motivated to see every day. A calendar system can be mechanically similar in two games while feeling completely different when one day is framed by classes and city life and the other by travel and political uncertainty. If you are undecided, ask which opening question interests you more: how a group of students changes their society, or how a party navigates a fantasy succession crisis.
Is Metaphor like Persona 5?
Yes, in structure and design lineage; no, in setting and story continuity. Both are large ATLUS turn-based RPGs with party growth, weakness-focused decision-making, a schedule that makes time valuable and relationships that support progression. Both ask you to divide attention between preparing for danger and investing in the people around you.
The difference is how those ideas are expressed. Persona 5’s identity comes from Personas, Phantom Thieves and a school-centered dual life. Metaphor’s identity comes from Archetypes, a fantasy world and a political journey. Similar design priorities make the transition understandable, but the fiction, terminology and party context are distinct.

| Element | Persona 5 Royal | Metaphor: ReFantazio |
|---|---|---|
| World | Contemporary Tokyo and school life | A new fantasy realm |
| Story frame | Students living as Phantom Thieves | A journey shaped by a political succession conflict |

| Combat identity | Personas, party roles and weakness-focused turn-based decisions | Archetypes, party roles and weakness-focused turn-based decisions |
| Continuity | Its own story | Its own story; prior Persona knowledge is not required |
Think of Metaphor as a new interpretation of a familiar ATLUS design philosophy, not as Persona 5 in medieval clothing. That distinction matters if you are choosing based on story continuity or expecting a direct sequel.

Persona 5 Royal: school, confidants and the Phantom Thieves
Persona 5 makes the social-life simulation unusually visible. Your days are organized around school, friendships and the practical question of which relationship or activity deserves limited time. Confidants are not an optional role-playing layer placed beside the main story; they are one of the ways the game asks you to define the protagonist’s life outside missions.
The Phantom Thieves premise gives those choices a clear social center. You are managing both the group’s supernatural work and the ordinary connections that make its members feel like students. If you want a game where social planning is inseparable from the fantasy, Persona 5 Royal is the more direct fit.
Metaphor: relationships during a journey
Metaphor carries forward a daily-planning and relationship framework, but the context changes. Instead of returning to a school-centered routine, you develop connections with companions while traveling through a fantasy political conflict. The same broad question remains—how should you use each day?—but the answer is shaped by movement, the party and the succession story.
This makes Metaphor suitable for players who like relationship mechanics but do not want a school setting. Its social structure is recognizable enough for Persona players to understand, while its fantasy presentation gives those relationships a different purpose and atmosphere.
Which calendar should a beginner choose?
Choose Persona 5 Royal if you want the clearest, most immediately legible version of the school-and-social-life formula. Choose Metaphor if the formula sounds appealing only when attached to fantasy travel and political stakes. Neither game is automatically easier because of its calendar; the important question is which activities you will be happier to plan for dozens of in-game days.
Combat and progression
What the games share
Both games use turn-based battles in which identifying weaknesses and choosing appropriate actions are central decisions. You build a party, improve its capabilities and make trade-offs about how to prepare for the next challenge. That common foundation means either game can introduce you to ATLUS’s approach to tactical turn management.
Neither system should be treated as objectively superior on the evidence available. The better fit depends on whether you prefer Persona 5’s Personas and Phantom Thieves structure or Metaphor’s Archetypes and fantasy presentation.
Persona 5 Royal’s Persona identity
Persona 5’s progression is tied to Personas, party roles and the way supernatural missions fit into the Phantom Thieves’ lives. The combat system reinforces the game’s broader fantasy: you are not only preparing a party for battles, you are developing a group of students who operate under a secret identity.

Metaphor’s Archetype identity
Metaphor introduces the Archetype system as its signature approach to party roles and progression. The system gives the fantasy adventure its own vocabulary instead of simply reproducing Persona terminology. If you want to see how the creators reinterpret their established ideas in a new setting, Metaphor is the more interesting first experiment.
Choose Metaphor when you enjoy adapting a party to a fantasy journey and want the combat system to feel like part of a new RPG identity. The shared weakness-focused foundation should feel familiar to Persona players, while the Archetype framework gives the game its own strategic emphasis.
Story, cast and emotional investment
Story and character preferences are the area where a universal winner is least defensible. No primary evidence establishes that one game has objectively better writing, characters, soundtrack or dungeon design. Your decision should therefore follow the kind of ensemble you want to spend time with rather than an unsupported ranking.

Choose Persona 5 Royal for a defined student ensemble
Persona 5’s cast is built around troubled high school students who share the Phantom Thieves identity. That gives the group a clear collective premise and lets the story contrast public school life with private resistance. If you want an ensemble whose relationships are constantly filtered through youth, friendship and the pressure of living a double life, this is the stronger match.
Choose Metaphor for companions shaped by a political journey
Metaphor’s cast is encountered within a fantasy succession conflict. The party’s relationships are connected to travel and the political future of the world, so choose it if you prefer companions whose personal stakes emerge from a broader fantasy crisis. The game’s appeal is less about revisiting the familiar school ensemble and more about seeing how the creators build a new group around a new world.
A spoiler-light test
Read the official premise for each game and notice which nouns pull you forward. If “school,” “Tokyo” and “Phantom Thieves” are the words you want more of, select Persona 5 Royal. If “fantasy,” “journey” and “succession” are more compelling, select Metaphor. This test is more reliable than trying to predict which cast or soundtrack you will personally prefer.
Length and pacing
Both are large story-driven RPGs. A first-time player should not choose based on an assumed short route or a guaranteed faster completion, because the available evidence does not establish a definitive total playtime for either game. Plan for a substantial commitment and select the setting you would enjoy inhabiting for a long campaign.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallPersona 5 Royal’s pacing is likely to appeal to players who enjoy a recurring school-and-social rhythm: ordinary activities and relationships repeatedly frame the Phantom Thieves’ missions. Metaphor’s pacing is better suited to players who want travel and a political objective to provide the forward motion. In both cases, the calendar makes priorities meaningful, so the game can feel slower when you spend time on relationships and more urgent when story objectives dominate.
Do you need to play Persona before Metaphor?
No. Metaphor is a standalone fantasy RPG, and Persona 5 is not a prerequisite for understanding its story, characters or world. The shared creators and design ideas may make some interfaces or planning concepts feel familiar, but there is no required narrative order.
Playing Persona 5 Royal first is useful only as preparation for the style of game: you become familiar with balancing daily activities, relationships and turn-based battles. Playing Metaphor first preserves the surprise of its fantasy setting and lets you approach its Archetype system without comparing every feature to Persona.

Which should an RPG beginner choose?
Start with Persona 5 Royal if…
- You want contemporary Tokyo and a school-life setting.
- You like the idea of a strongly defined ensemble living as Phantom Thieves.
- You want social relationships and daily routines to be the center of the experience.
- You prefer the Persona vocabulary of supernatural identities and party roles.
- You are looking for the most direct introduction to ATLUS’s modern social-simulation format.
Start with Metaphor if…
- You want classic fantasy rather than a modern city.
- A political succession story sounds more appealing than a school-centered conflict.
- You want a standalone game from the Persona creators without needing previous series knowledge.
- You are interested in the new Archetype system and its fantasy presentation.
- You prefer companions and travel to define the relationship structure.
If both sound equally appealing
Use the setting as the tie-breaker. Persona 5 Royal is the safer first purchase for someone specifically seeking the famous school-life and Phantom Thieves formula. Metaphor is the safer first purchase for someone who wants a fresh fantasy world and worries that a contemporary school setting will feel too familiar. There is no story risk in choosing either one first.
Play order: Persona 5 first or Metaphor first?
| Order | What you gain | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Persona 5 Royal, then Metaphor | Familiarity with ATLUS’s calendar, relationships and weakness-focused battles | You may notice how Metaphor reinterprets those ideas through Archetypes and fantasy politics. |
| Metaphor, then Persona 5 Royal | A fresh fantasy entry point and no prior assumptions about Persona’s school setting | Persona 5 will feel like a move into a modern, socially focused version of related design ideas. |
Choose the first order if you want to understand the evolution from Persona’s modern setting into ATLUS’s fantasy experiment. Choose the second if you want each game to stand on its own and would rather begin with the newer fantasy identity. Neither order creates a story spoiler problem for the other.
Platforms and editions
Metaphor is officially listed for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and it has a Switch 2 edition. Platform and edition availability can vary by region, so check the local store listing before buying. The platform information does not establish that every edition has identical content or availability in every country.
If you choose Persona 5, look specifically for Persona 5 Royal rather than assuming that every listing uses the same edition name. Store pages can differ by region, so confirm the title, platform and included edition on the page where you intend to purchase.
What the sales figures tell you—and what they do not
Persona is a widely established series: SEGA’s official PlayStation announcement reported 22 million units worldwide as of March 5, 2024. That figure explains why Persona 5 is the familiar recommendation for players seeking ATLUS’s modern social-RPG formula, but popularity does not prove that it is the right setting for you.
Metaphor also had a strong commercial launch. A 2024 SEGA Sammy Holdings investor presentation reported more than one million worldwide sales on its release day. That demonstrates immediate interest in the new fantasy direction, not an objective verdict about writing, combat or character quality.
A practical decision checklist
- Pick the setting. Choose contemporary Tokyo and school life for Persona 5 Royal; choose fantasy travel and political succession for Metaphor.
- Pick the social context. Choose confidants and Phantom Thieves if you want a student ensemble; choose traveling companions if you want relationships shaped by a fantasy journey.
- Pick the progression language. Choose Personas and party roles for Persona 5 Royal; choose Archetypes and their fantasy framing for Metaphor.
- Accept the commitment. Both are large story RPGs, so favor the cast and world you would enjoy seeing for a long campaign.
- Check your platform. Verify the local listing for the exact edition, especially for Metaphor’s PS4, PS5 and Switch 2 availability.
Common questions
Is Metaphor: ReFantazio a Persona sequel?
No. The games share ATLUS creators and design ideas, but Metaphor has its own fantasy world, political story and characters.
Which game has better combat?
There is no established objective winner. Persona 5 Royal centers its combat identity on Personas and the Phantom Thieves, while Metaphor centers it on Archetypes and a fantasy party. Choose the terminology and setting you prefer.
Is Persona 5 Royal better for a first ATLUS RPG?
It is the better fit if you want the modern school-life and social-simulation format. Metaphor is equally valid as a starting point if fantasy and political world-building are more appealing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can I play Metaphor without knowing Persona?
Yes. Metaphor is designed as a standalone RPG and does not require prior Persona knowledge.
Should I buy both?
If both settings appeal to you, either order works. Buy the one whose world and cast you want to enter first, then treat the other as a separate interpretation of related ATLUS ideas rather than as a required follow-up.
Final recommendation
Choose Persona 5 Royal first for contemporary Tokyo, school routines, confidant relationships and the Phantom Thieves’ dual life. Choose Metaphor: ReFantazio first for fantasy world-building, a political succession journey and the Archetype system. Because Metaphor is standalone, the deciding factor is not continuity but the kind of RPG world you want to inhabit.
