Metaphor: ReFantazio combines real-time action with turn-based battles, while its Archetypes let you adapt your party and follower bonds help develop those battle options. Its day-and-night calendar also makes activity choices meaningful: quests, dungeon exploration, relationships, and virtues compete for limited time. You do not need to follow one prescribed build or schedule; focus on what your party and current goals need next.
How combat works
ATLUS describes combat as a blend of real-time action and turn-based encounters. Both modes matter, but the official descriptions covered here do not spell out every turn rule or damage calculation, so it is better to learn those specifics from the game’s own prompts than to assume a universal formula.
Party setup is a key part of preparation. Xbox Wire’s October 11, 2024 launch article says that advantages and enemy weaknesses matter, and that you can swap Archetypes across the party to suit your strategy. Treat an encounter as a reason to consider whether your current abilities fit the threats you expect, rather than as a test of one mandatory configuration.

Meristation’s October 11, 2024 beginner advice recommends gathering information about enemies in upcoming dungeons and using it to adjust your party. The same guide suggests looking for opportunities to begin a fight with an advantage and countering enemy buffs. These are practical editorial recommendations, not guarantees of optimal play; adapt them to the resources and options you have.

Keep recovery and MP in mind
Meristation also advises carrying remedies for status conditions and revival, and managing MP carefully because dungeon recovery can be constrained. It suggests Fighter skills that spend HP rather than MP as one possible way to preserve MP. Consider that trade-off in context: conserving one resource is useful only if the cost to another resource is acceptable for your situation.
What Archetypes do
Think of Archetypes as battle powers or job-like forms, not cosmetic outfits. ATLUS’s official description says an Archetype is a source of power in battle that grants access to a diverse set of skills. Changing Archetypes can therefore change the abilities available to a character and how that character contributes to the party.

Xbox Wire reports that fourteen core Archetype lineages branch into over 40 Archetypes. The number describes the breadth of the system; it does not mean that one particular selection is best, or that you need to unlock or use every option. Swap and experiment when a new challenge gives you a reason to reconsider party roles.

When preparing, compare the abilities available through your party’s Archetypes with the demands you expect to face. Enemy information can help you decide whether to favor particular tools, while your own resource constraints may affect which skills are practical. The sources establish flexibility, not a fixed party recipe, so there is no need to treat a single lineup as compulsory.

How follower bonds connect to progression
Follower relationships are connected to the Archetype system. Xbox Wire says that interacting and building bonds with followers awakens and strengthens Archetypes. Checking in with followers is therefore relevant both to character development and to the battle options you can pursue.
That connection does not establish that every bond must be maximized, or that one follower should always take priority. If a relationship is available, weigh its appeal and potential progression against your other current goals. Meristation’s launch-era guide recommends building relationships early, especially with combat companions, but that is advice rather than a requirement for success.

How to think about the calendar
ATLUS describes daytime as a time for quests, dungeon exploration, and treasure hunts, and nighttime as a time to strengthen relationships and increase virtues. Xbox Wire says choices advance the day-and-night cycle and that time is limited. In practical terms, choosing one activity means giving up that time slot for another opportunity.
Choose the next activity by its purpose

A flexible beginner routine

Before a dungeon, gather available information about its enemies and consider whether your party’s Archetypes and abilities suit what you expect to encounter.

Keep status remedies and revival items in mind, and decide how carefully to spend MP when dungeon recovery may be limited.

After a combat or story milestone, check which follower and virtue activities are currently available, then compare them with your other time-sensitive goals.

When your needs change, revisit party roles and activity choices. Treat advice from a launch guide as an option to consider, not a rule that overrides your own priorities.
