The right metal keyboard depends on what “metal” means in its construction and which layout and switch system you need. The Keychron Q1 V2 is the clearest fit here for a wired 75% mechanical keyboard with a full CNC-machined aluminum body and conventional MX-style hot-swap support. Other options trade that construction for wireless low-profile use, magnetic switches, or a split layout. These are specification-based picks, not a hands-on ranking; manufacturer features do not establish typing feel, sound, durability, or value.
What counts as a metal keyboard?
Product descriptions can refer to three different builds, and they are not interchangeable:
- Full metal body: Metal forms the main chassis. Keychron describes the Q1 V2 as having a full CNC-machined aluminum body.
- Metal frame: Aluminum is part of the frame, but the claim does not establish that the whole chassis is metal. NuPhy describes the Air75 as having an ultra-thin aluminum frame.
- Metal top plate: A metal plate sits beneath the switches, while other parts of the keyboard may use different materials. A top plate alone does not mean the keyboard has a full metal body.
Check the exact construction claim for the model and revision you are considering. Aluminum construction by itself does not tell you how a keyboard will feel or sound.
Metal keyboard options by use case
| Model | Construction and layout | Connection and switch system | Useful distinctions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keychron Q1 V2 | Full CNC-machined aluminum body; steel plate; wired 75% | Conventional mechanical switches; hot-swappable with most 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style switches, including Gateron, Cherry MX, and Kailh | Keychron lists 1000 Hz polling and a fully assembled weight of 1825 g ± 10 g. |
| Keychron Q1 HE 8K | Aluminum construction; wired 75%; gasket mount | Magnetic switches; hot-swap support for Keychron Lime and Gateron Jade magnetic switches | Keychron lists 8000 Hz polling and adjustable actuation from 0.1–3.35 mm. Magnetic compatibility is not ordinary MX-style compatibility. |
| Logitech MX Mechanical | Low-profile wireless mechanical keyboard; Logitech mentions aluminum but does not establish a full metal body | Tactile Quiet, Clicky, and Linear options; switches among up to three devices | Logitech lists compatibility with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux, and iPadOS. Treat this as a comparison candidate, not a confirmed full-metal-body pick. |
| Keychron Q11 | Full-metal split 75%; halves can be positioned separately or joined with a bridge cable | Hot-swap sockets for 3-pin and 5-pin MX mechanical switches; QMK/VIA support | Keychron’s page also points to a newer Q11 Ultra 8K, so check the exact revision and availability. |
| NuPhy Air75 | Ultra-thin aluminum frame; 16 mm at its thinnest point | Low-profile keyboard; current switch and connection details are not established here | The available product result is older and its page could not be independently opened. Verify the current model and listing before treating it as a live recommendation. |
The figures and feature descriptions in this table are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. The table does not establish which keyboard has the best typing feel, sound, reliability, or value.

Which construction and layout should you choose?
Choose a full aluminum body for a substantial desktop board
The Q1 V2 is the most straightforward match among these options if you want a wired 75% mechanical keyboard with an explicitly specified full aluminum body. Keychron describes its body as “6063 aluminum CNC machined,” with a polished, anodized, and sandblasted finish. The manufacturer also lists a steel plate and a fully assembled weight of 1825 g ± 10 g. That is a specification, not proof of a particular sound, feel, or durability in everyday use.
Choose a low-profile wireless board for flexibility
The MX Mechanical is the option here that combines low-profile mechanical switches with wireless use and switching among as many as three devices. Logitech mentions aluminum, but its cited product information does not establish a full metal body. If a full metal chassis is essential, verify the exact construction rather than inferring it from the word “aluminum.”

How to check switch compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact keyboard model and revision. Similar model names can refer to different switch systems or newer revisions.
- Confirm the switch category. The Q1 V2 and Q11 specify conventional 3-pin or 5-pin MX-style mechanical switch support. The Q1 HE 8K specifies magnetic-switch support for Keychron Lime and Gateron Jade.
- Match replacement switches to the manufacturer’s compatibility list. “Hot-swappable” does not mean that every switch fits or works; socket and switch technology matter.
- Check other accessories against the same model. Confirm compatibility for replacement keycaps, switches, and any palm rest before ordering.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Polling rate, actuation range, listed weight, and construction describe specified features. They do not independently demonstrate a gaming advantage, preferred typing feel, quieter operation, or long-term reliability. For example, Keychron lists 1000 Hz polling for the Q1 V2 and 8000 Hz for the Q1 HE 8K, but those figures alone do not establish that one is better for a particular buyer.
Likewise, a heavy aluminum keyboard may suit a stationary desk better than a setup where portability matters, but weight alone does not establish stability or comfort. Consider the layout, height, connection, and switch type alongside the materials.
