Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is a remake, not a new story. It retells the 2004 PlayStation 2 game with modern graphics, 3D audio and two camera-and-control options. The characters, setting, voice acting, gameplay, music and main story return. Choose Delta for a current-platform presentation and flexible camera; choose the original through Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 for the authentic 2004 look, interface and pacing.

The short answer: Delta and Snake Eater tell the same core story

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater is Konami’s remake of the 2004 Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Konami describes Delta as retaining the original game’s story and world while adding all-new graphics and 3D audio. It launched on August 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.

That means the key distinction is not a different plot or a sequel-style continuation. Delta is designed to let a modern audience experience the same Snake Eater campaign in a contemporary audiovisual format. The original remains the reference point for the PlayStation 2-era presentation, control feel and pacing.

Producer Noriaki Okamura summarized the remake’s narrative policy in a 2025 PlayStation Blog interview: “I had no intention of altering the original story, so I insisted that we can just update the game graphics.” That statement is the best guide to the project’s scope. Delta changes how the game is presented and controlled, while preserving the adventure players know as Snake Eater.

What each version is

The original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

The original is the 2004 PlayStation 2 release. Its identity is tied to the hardware and design conventions of that period: the visual presentation, audio character, interface behavior, camera assumptions and pacing all belong to the PS2 era. Those qualities are not merely technical limitations; they are part of what longtime players recognize as the original Snake Eater experience.

Konami makes the original available on current systems through Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1. The collection contains MGS3 and is intended to run on current platforms, giving players a supported way to play the older version without locating original PS2 hardware.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

Delta rebuilds the presentation for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Its headline changes are all-new graphics, 3D audio and a choice between two control-and-camera approaches. The remake keeps the same setting, characters, voice acting, gameplay and music identified by Konami for the original campaign.

Because Delta is a remake rather than a remaster that simply scales an old image, the visual difference is immediately central to the experience. The underlying adventure is familiar, but the way environments, characters and sound occupy the screen and speakers is modernized.

Story, characters and structure: what stays the same

The main narrative remains the same

Delta preserves the original Snake Eater story and world. You should approach it as the same central adventure, not as a revised continuity with a replacement plot. The setting, principal characters and campaign structure return from the 2004 game.

This is important if you are deciding whether playing one version makes the other unnecessary. For story purposes, there is substantial overlap: either version delivers the core Snake Eater narrative. Delta’s purpose is to make that narrative feel at home on modern hardware, not to supply a separate chapter.

Voice acting and music return

The remake retains the original voice acting and music listed by Konami among the returning elements. Consequently, the performances and musical identity that define Snake Eater are not replaced with a newly written cast or a different soundtrack concept.

The distinction is presentation rather than basic content. Delta adds 3D audio, while the original preserves the audio character of its 2004 release. The spoken performances and music belong to the same Snake Eater identity, but the way sound is positioned and reproduced differs between the two versions.

What “unchanged story” does and does not promise

“Same story” should not be read as “every technical detail is identical.” A remake can use a different camera, modern rendering and updated audio while still following the same narrative. Delta’s New Style control scheme is a clear example: the viewpoint and mapping can feel different even though the mission and events remain those of Snake Eater.

Conversely, the evidence does not support treating Delta as a new interpretation with a rewritten ending, new protagonists or a different campaign premise. If your deciding factor is the plot, both versions belong to the same story line.

Camera and controls: the largest practical difference

New Style uses an over-the-shoulder third-person view

Delta’s New Style is an over-the-shoulder, third-person control scheme. It presents Snake from a closer modern perspective and is the option to try first if you are accustomed to contemporary third-person action games.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The camera change affects how you read nearby terrain, line up movement and think about positioning. It does not create a different campaign, but it changes the moment-to-moment relationship between Snake, the environment and the edge of the screen. Players who find older fixed or elevated viewpoints difficult may prefer this immediately.

Legacy Style echoes the original viewpoint and mapping

Legacy Style uses an original-like top-down viewpoint and control mapping. It is intended for players who want the older game’s control language rather than the new over-the-shoulder approach.

Legacy Style is especially relevant to returning players. It lets the remake’s modern graphics and audio coexist with a camera-and-control arrangement that feels closer to the 2004 release. Selecting it does not turn Delta into the original technically; the rendering and 3D audio remain Delta features.

How to choose between the two styles

  • Start with New Style if you normally play modern third-person games or want the most contemporary camera perspective.
  • Start with Legacy Style if you remember the original’s viewpoint and want the remake to preserve that familiar control relationship.
  • Try both before committing. The choice is about comfort, spatial awareness and muscle memory, so a short hands-on comparison is more useful than assuming one style is universally superior.

The original itself remains the option for players who want the complete 2004-era package: its camera, mapping, visual presentation and audio character together. Delta’s Legacy Style narrows the control gap, but it does not reproduce every aspect of the old release.

Graphics and audio: modern presentation versus PS2 character

What Delta adds

Delta replaces the PS2-era presentation with all-new graphics and 3D audio. The visual overhaul is the most obvious reason to select the remake: scenes, characters and environments are presented through a current-generation rendering target rather than the original PlayStation 2 image.

3D audio is the corresponding change on the sound side. It is designed to give sound a modern spatial presentation, while the returning voice acting and music preserve the recognizable audio content of Snake Eater.

What the original preserves

The original keeps the 2004 visual and audio character. Its appearance, sound and interface are inseparable from the period in which it was released. Some players value that character because it shows the game as its original audience encountered it, with the visual compromises and rhythms that shaped its identity.

Choosing the original is therefore not simply choosing a lower-resolution copy. You are choosing the historical presentation: the way the PS2 version frames its world, communicates information and moves at its own pace.

Why the presentation choice changes the feel

Graphics and audio influence more than image quality. A modern camera paired with new rendering can make spaces easier to parse for a player used to current games. The older presentation can feel more deliberate and period-specific, particularly for someone who enjoys the texture of PS2 design.

Neither preference contradicts the other. Delta is the practical choice when display quality, current hardware and contemporary sound matter most. The original is the preservation choice when authenticity to the 2004 experience matters more than modernization.

Differences that matter during play

Spatial awareness and movement

The camera determines how you interpret a space before you make a move. New Style places the view over Snake’s shoulder, which can feel immediately legible to players trained on modern third-person games. Legacy Style uses a top-down perspective closer to the original’s logic. The original game combines that older viewpoint with its complete period-specific presentation.

If you are returning after many years, camera familiarity may matter more than graphical fidelity during the first hours. Delta gives you a way to keep the remake while changing the control relationship; the original does not offer the New Style alternative.

Interface and pacing tolerance

The original’s interface and pacing are part of its 2004 identity. Players who enjoy older design conventions may find that deliberate rhythm valuable. Players who prefer contemporary presentation may find Delta easier to approach because its graphics, sound and New Style option align more closely with current expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Easier” is not a claim that Delta removes every challenge or changes the campaign’s design. It means the remake offers a modern presentation and a choice of viewpoint that may reduce friction for people less comfortable with PS2-era conventions.

Accessibility considerations

Konami’s comparison points position Delta as the choice for modern image quality, sound, camera options and accessibility. The practical benefit established here is the ability to choose between New Style and Legacy Style, plus the clearer modern presentation. Specific accessibility features beyond those differences should be confirmed in the platform’s current product information rather than assumed.

Historical texture

The original can communicate how Snake Eater was designed and experienced in 2004. Its camera, visual language and audio character are evidence of that era’s priorities. Delta preserves the same core adventure but filters it through a new presentation. If your interest is game history, the original supplies context that a remake cannot fully substitute.

Which version should you play?

Choose Delta if modern presentation is your priority

  • You want all-new graphics rather than the original PS2-era image.
  • You prefer 3D audio and a current-platform presentation.
  • You normally use an over-the-shoulder third-person camera.
  • You want the option to switch between New Style and Legacy Style.
  • You are approaching Snake Eater for the first time and want the least friction with older presentation conventions.

Delta is the best fit when your question is, “What is the most current way to experience the Snake Eater story?” It supplies the same central adventure while updating the audiovisual layer and camera choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the original if authenticity is your priority

  • You want the 2004 PlayStation 2 visual and audio character.
  • You care about the original camera, control mapping and pacing as a complete package.
  • You are studying how the game was originally presented or revisiting a specific period of console history.
  • You prefer the source version rather than a remake, even when the remake follows the same story.

The original is the better fit when your question is, “What did Snake Eater feel like in its original form?” Master Collection Vol. 1 makes that version practical on current platforms.

Play both when the comparison itself is the point

Playing both is justified when you want to separate the game’s design from its presentation. Start with whichever version matches your immediate priority, then use the other to examine the contrast: the same story and performances viewed through a different camera, rendering approach, audio system and period of game design.

A useful order for newcomers is Delta first, because New Style and the modern presentation reduce the initial barrier, followed by the original if you want historical context. A returning player may prefer the reverse order to re-establish the 2004 experience before seeing how Delta changes its presentation.

What Delta does not change

  • It does not replace Snake Eater with a new story.
  • It does not discard the original setting or principal characters.
  • It does not replace the returning voice acting with an unrelated cast.
  • It does not abandon the original music.
  • It does not force every player into the new over-the-shoulder view; Legacy Style provides an original-like alternative.

These boundaries explain why the two releases can be discussed together without treating them as separate entries in the series. Delta changes the route into the experience, while the original remains the baseline that defines the story and its 2004 presentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

Use the following order if you are still undecided:

  1. Decide whether story novelty matters. If you want a different campaign, neither version is positioned as a new story; Delta is a remake of Snake Eater.
  2. Choose your presentation era. Select Delta for all-new graphics and 3D audio, or the original for PS2-era visual and audio character.
  3. Choose your camera preference. Select New Style for an over-the-shoulder third-person view, Legacy Style for an original-like top-down arrangement, or the original for the complete 2004 control package.
  4. Match the release to your hardware. Delta is on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam; the original is accessed through Master Collection Vol. 1 on current platforms.
  5. Buy for the experience you actually want. Do not select Delta expecting a rewritten narrative, and do not select the original expecting modern graphics or 3D audio.

The simplest verdict is equally direct: Delta is the modern remake of Snake Eater; the original is the historical source experience. Both deliver the same core story, so your choice should be driven by camera, presentation, platform and tolerance for 2004-era pacing rather than by fear of missing a different plot.
