For most players, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1 is the best version to play today. It is the practical choice if you want to play on current hardware, select modern display settings, remap controls, or use a PC. Choose the original PlayStation 2 release instead when original hardware behavior, period presentation, disc collecting, or a comparison with the expanded Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance matters more than convenience.
The Master Collection version is an HD-era conversion with configurable rendering, upscaling, movie quality, and control options. It is not a ground-up remake. The original release remains the reference for the PS2-era look and hardware context, while Substance is the expanded original-era edition rather than simply another name for Sons of Liberty.

There is no single “best” image setting for everyone. Original Mode prioritizes period-style presentation; Adjusted Mode and custom settings prioritize a cleaner modern display. Your platform, television, controller, and interest in collecting should determine the final choice.

What each release actually is
Master Collection Vol.1: a modernized conversion
The collection packages Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for current console and PC environments. Konami’s documentation identifies the game as a Master Collection Vol.1 title and describes selectable internal rendering, upscaling methods, movie resolution, and controller remapping. Those options make it easier to adapt the game to a 1080p, 1440p, or 4K display than the original PS2 release.

Calling it an HD conversion is important. The collection does not rebuild the game as a modern remake with newly authored assets or redesigned systems. Its purpose is to preserve the original game while adapting output and input for newer hardware.
The original PlayStation 2 release
The original release preserves the PS2-era presentation and the behavior of the hardware for which the game was designed. That includes the period output path, original disc experience, and the practical limitations of connecting legacy hardware to a modern television. It is the right reference point for historical comparison and for players who want the game as it existed in its original context.
Playing the original normally means owning the disc and using compatible legacy hardware or another lawful compatible setup. Availability, condition, and regional format vary, so a used copy is not automatically equivalent to a working, complete setup.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is an extended version of the PlayStation 2 classic, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. That makes it a separate choice for collectors and completionists. If your goal is specifically the original Sons of Liberty release, do not assume that a copy labeled Substance is the same edition. Conversely, if you want the expanded original-era package, looking only for Sons of Liberty will not satisfy that requirement.
The Master Collection comparison is therefore slightly uneven: its MGS2 entry is based on Sons of Liberty, while the original-era family also includes the expanded Substance release. Decide which game edition you want before comparing discs, platforms, or displays.
Display options in the Master Collection
Original Mode
Konami describes Original Mode as rendering at the game’s original resolution, using default upscaling and the original movies. This is the closest built-in option to the period presentation without connecting a PS2. It does not turn modern hardware into a literal PS2; it uses the collection’s conversion while selecting the original-style rendering choices.

Adjusted Mode
Adjusted Mode uses FHD internal resolution and upscales to the highest supported target for the display and platform. It is intended for players who want a cleaner image on a modern screen without manually choosing every setting.
Custom settings
Custom options let you choose original or FHD internal rendering, an FHD, WQHD, or 4K upscaling target where supported, and original or high-resolution movies. The useful distinction is between internal rendering and output upscaling: a higher output target does not necessarily mean the game is internally rendered at that resolution.
High-resolution movies can look more appropriate on a modern display, while original movies preserve the older presentation. Neither setting changes the underlying game edition into a remake.
Documented platform targets

These are maximum documented upscaling targets, not independent image-quality measurements. Television processing, viewing distance, output configuration, and the selected internal-rendering mode can affect what you actually see. No controlled cross-platform benchmark establishes a universal frame-rate, latency, or image-quality winner.
Controls and input flexibility
Console controller options
Konami’s console notes document controller remapping for the Master Collection. That matters if a modern controller’s button layout feels different from the PS2 arrangement or if you need to move an action to a more comfortable button. Remapping changes the input assignment; it does not redesign the game’s underlying control logic.
On a console, start with the game’s controller or control settings and select the documented remapping option. Test the new layout in a safe area before committing to a long session, particularly if you move actions that are used together during aiming, weapon selection, or movement.

Steam keyboard, mouse, and controller support
The Steam update adds the broadest documented input customization in the comparison. It includes controller remapping, keyboard-and-mouse layouts, custom bindings, mouse sensitivity controls, and mouse operation. Players who prefer a mouse for camera or aiming tasks can configure sensitivity rather than relying on a fixed value.
PC flexibility is useful, but it also creates more settings to verify. After changing bindings, check every frequently used action and confirm that the game recognizes the intended device. If a controller and mouse are connected simultaneously, make sure the active layout matches the device you are testing.
Convenience, availability, and ownership
The Master Collection is the straightforward route when you already own a current console or gaming PC. Installation, display output, and controller setup are handled by the modern platform, and the game has received continuing maintenance. You do not need to locate a working PS2, an appropriate video cable, or a replacement disc in good condition.

The original release requires more planning. A disc can be scratched, a console can need maintenance, and modern televisions may not accept legacy output without additional equipment. A lawful compatible setup also needs to match the disc’s region and video format. Those issues are part of the original-hardware experience, but they are real costs in time and troubleshooting.
Physical stock, platform SKUs, prices, and regional availability change over time. Check the current listing for your country and platform rather than assuming that a particular boxed edition, language option, or digital SKU is still sold.
Authenticity and collecting
Choose the original PS2 release when authenticity means more than reproducing the same game on a new machine. Original hardware preserves the period output chain and the feel of using the disc and console together. It also gives collectors the physical object, packaging, manual materials, and regional edition to inspect.

The Master Collection can approximate the original presentation through Original Mode, but it remains a conversion running on newer hardware. That distinction is important for archival play, display collecting, and direct comparisons with period screenshots or captured video.
If you collect MGS2 releases, keep the edition names separate in your catalog: Sons of Liberty is the original PS2 classic referenced by the collection, while Substance is the expanded original-era edition. A complete collection may reasonably include both.
Which version fits each platform?
PlayStation 5
PS5 is the strongest console choice for convenience and display headroom. The documented maximum upscaling target is 4K, and the collection provides Original Mode, Adjusted Mode, and custom choices for rendering, upscaling, and movie quality. Start with Adjusted Mode if you want a cleaner modern image; choose Original Mode if period presentation is your priority.
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro
The standard PS4 has a documented FHD ceiling, while PS4 Pro is documented up to 4K. Both remain useful if you already own the hardware, but do not expect the standard PS4 to expose the same maximum target as the Pro model. Select the internal-rendering and movie options that match your television rather than choosing a higher target that your console cannot provide.
Xbox Series X and Series S
Xbox Series X is documented up to 4K; Series S is documented up to WQHD. That difference is a platform specification, not a statement that one console is universally better for every player. Choose the model you already use, then select Original, Adjusted, or custom settings according to your display and preference.

PC is the best fit when input customization is central to your decision. The documented Steam update adds keyboard-and-mouse layouts, custom bindings, mouse sensitivity, mouse operation, and controller remapping. It also lets you choose display settings within the collection’s supported options.

PC is not automatically the most authentic option. If your priority is the physical PS2 disc and original hardware behavior, a computer running the Master Collection remains the modern conversion rather than the original setup.
Original PS2 hardware
Use the PS2 release when you already have compatible hardware, a disc in usable condition, and a display connection that works for that console. It is the clearest choice for historical authenticity and for comparing Sons of Liberty with the original-era Substance release.

For an original-style presentation
- Open the game’s display settings on your console or PC.
- Select Original Mode, or choose original internal rendering in the custom settings.
- Keep the original movie option enabled if you want the period-style video presentation.
- Play a short section and check that the image scaling and television processing look comfortable from your normal seating distance.
For a sharper modern display
- Open the display settings and select Adjusted Mode, or use custom settings.
- Choose FHD internal rendering if you want the documented adjusted presentation.
- Select FHD, WQHD, or 4K upscaling only when that target is supported by your platform.
- Enable high-resolution movies if you prefer them to the original movie files.
For a personalized control layout
- Open the controller settings and enable remapping.
- On Steam, select a keyboard-and-mouse layout or create custom bindings.
- Set mouse sensitivity if you are using mouse operation.
- Test movement, camera control, weapon selection, and menu navigation before starting a long play session.
For original-hardware play
- Confirm that the disc edition is the one you intend to play: Sons of Liberty or Substance.
- Verify that the console reads the disc and that its video output is compatible with your display or lawful adapter setup.
- Use the television’s least disruptive scaling mode if you want to preserve the period image rather than apply aggressive sharpening.
- Keep the disc, console, and any necessary cables together if the setup is part of a collection.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking Original Mode for original hardware
Original Mode selects original-style rendering and movies inside the Master Collection. It does not reproduce every property of a physical PS2, its video cable, or its display behavior. Use it for an approximation of the period presentation, not as a claim of hardware identity.

Assuming all “HD” versions are interchangeable
The Master Collection entry and the original PS2 releases belong to different release contexts. The collection is a modern conversion with configurable output; Substance is an expanded original-era edition. Compare the exact game and edition name before deciding that two copies are equivalent.
Choosing a target your platform cannot provide
Upscaling limits differ by console. The standard PS4 and Xbox Series S do not have the same documented maximum as PS5, PS4 Pro, or Xbox Series X. Select a supported target and judge the result on your own display.
Expecting a benchmarked performance verdict
Available documentation establishes settings and maximum targets, not a controlled independent comparison of frame rate, latency, or image quality across every platform. Avoid treating a specification as a guarantee that every television or setup will look identical.
Buying the wrong physical edition
A listing that says “MGS2” may refer to Sons of Liberty, Substance, a collection, or a regional package. Confirm the title printed on the disc and the platform before purchasing, especially when collecting.

Konami’s PS5 documentation records Master Collection Ver.2.1.0 as released on February 13, 2026, following Ver.2.0.0 on November 15, 2024. The console Ver.2.0.0 notes document the rendering, upscaling, movie, and controller options described above. The Steam update was released on September 25, 2024 and documents the expanded PC input controls.
Keep the modern version updated before troubleshooting display or input behavior. If you are intentionally preserving a fixed archival setup, record the installed version and settings so that later changes do not get confused with differences between the original release and the collection.
