Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the best Metal Gear game in this ranking, followed by the original Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. That order is an editorial judgment, not a franchise-wide consensus or a numerical review score. It weighs stealth and action design, storytelling, influence, replayability, and what each game adds to the series.

The list includes inventive spin-offs as well as the mainline stealth games: Metal Gear’s identity stretches from tactical infiltration to card-based planning and high-speed sword combat. Konami reported in 2024 that the series had sold more than 60 million copies; that is the publisher’s series-wide figure for that year, not a current audited total (Konami’s 2024 corporate report).

How the ranking works

This is a considered ranking, not a claim that every player should prefer the same entry. The top choices balance memorable characters and narrative impact with distinctive play. Later spots recognize games that experiment successfully, even when their genre or structure departs from the familiar stealth-action formula.

The 10 best Metal Gear games, ranked

  1. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (2004)

The top pick is a prequel starring Naked Snake, who later becomes Big Boss. Its Russian-jungle setting makes survival part of stealth: players seek weapons, equipment, and food while navigating hostile territory. The personal story, conflict with Snake’s mentor, and memorable final act give the systems emotional weight. Its boss encounter at the end is one of the series’ most affecting moments.

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a modern presentation, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of this game, not a new chronological sequel. Konami describes it as recreating the original story and game design while evolving gameplay and visuals. It is listed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, and Steam on Konami’s game portal.

  2. Metal Gear Solid (1998)

The PlayStation entry established the series’ cinematic stealth identity for a broad audience. Solid Snake’s infiltration of Shadow Moses, a distinctive cast, and memorable boss encounters helped define what later games would build on. It also made interaction with the player part of the design: Psycho Mantis, for example, responds to data on the console’s memory card. The sequence is one reason the original remains influential rather than merely a historical curiosity.

  3. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001)

Sons of Liberty pushed beyond the first game’s technical presentation and took bigger risks with its story. Its themes around information, control, and online culture initially divided players, but have since invited renewed attention. That combination makes it the most challenging recommendation in the top three: its ideas can be more memorable than its first impression.

  4. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (2014) and The Phantom Pain (2015)

Together, Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain form the fifth mainline chapter. The strongest case for the pair is The Phantom Pain’s open mission design: players have substantial freedom to choose routes, tools, and tactics. The trade-off is narrative. The story is often judged weaker than the series’ best and feels unfinished, so this is the pick for players who value flexible systems over a tightly resolved plot.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  5. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010)

First released for PSP, Peace Walker tells a mission-based Big Boss story and adds base management. Its structure and systems anticipate ideas expanded in The Phantom Pain. It is a major, mainline-like entry for players interested in the evolution of the series’ mission and army-building mechanics, even though it began on a handheld.

  6. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (2013)

Developed by PlatinumGames and starring Raiden, Revengeance swaps stealth emphasis for fast, exaggerated hack-and-slash combat. That change is the point: it is a character-action spin-off, not a conventional infiltration game. It earns its place by committing to a different kind of momentum and spectacle, making it the strongest choice here for players who want action first.

  7. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008)

Guns of the Patriots brings Solid Snake’s story to a conclusion, with set pieces, gameplay, and callbacks that reward long-time fans. It is also uneven: later gameplay can lose momentum, while retcons and lengthy, convoluted exposition complicate the narrative. It is a significant ending to Snake’s arc, but not the cleanest-paced entry.

  8. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (1990)

This MSX2 sequel helped establish ideas that became series hallmarks, including radar, enemy awareness, and memorable codec conversations. It is not the same game as the separate NES title Snake’s Revenge. Players outside Japan waited 16 years for an official release, according to PlayStation’s history of the series.

  9. Metal Gear Acid 2 (2006)

This PSP spin-off turns stealth into a tactical card game. Instead of relying on reflexes, players plan turns and weigh risk against reward. Its unusual format shows how the series’ core tension—getting through danger without being caught—can work outside real-time stealth action.

  10. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (2006)

Another PSP Big Boss story, Portable Ops centers on recruiting soldiers and building an army. Those systems appeared in an earlier form here before being expanded in Peace Walker. The game’s canonical status is debated, so it is best understood as a notable side entry rather than treated as an undisputed piece of the main timeline.

  • For survival stealth and a self-contained story: start with Snake Eater. It is a prequel, so it does not require playing the earlier Solid games first.
  • For the series’ cinematic stealth foundations: begin with Metal Gear Solid, then continue to Sons of Liberty.
  • For freedom of approach and mission replay: try The Phantom Pain, accepting that its story is less satisfying than its systems.
  • For high-speed combat instead of stealth: choose Revengeance.
  • For tactical experimentation: consider Acid 2 if turn-based card strategy appeals to you.
