Meta currently offers the stronger combination of reported growth, operating margin and forward valuation. Alphabet is the more diversified business, with a rapidly expanding Google Cloud operation and greater operating-cash generation. The better long-term stock depends on whether you prefer Meta’s faster core execution or Alphabet’s broader portfolio and are comfortable with each company’s AI-spending and regulatory risks.

The comparison below uses fiscal-year 2025 results, 2026 capital-expenditure guidance and closing-market valuation data from October 15, 2026. Valuation multiples move with share prices and analyst estimates, so they are reference points rather than permanent rankings.

What Meta’s business gives a long-term investor

A highly profitable Family of Apps engine

Meta reported $200.966 billion of revenue and $83.276 billion of operating income for fiscal 2025, a 41% operating margin. Its Family of Apps segment generated $198.759 billion of revenue and $102.469 billion of operating income. The segment includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, with advertising providing the economic engine across the user network.

Family of Apps revenue represented approximately 98.9% of Meta’s total 2025 revenue, calculated from the company’s reported segment and consolidated figures. That concentration is a strength when engagement, ad demand and machine-learning targeting improve together, but it also means that a change in advertising conditions can affect a very large share of the company at once.

Reality Labs is a material drag, not a rounding error

Reality Labs produced only $2.207 billion of 2025 revenue and recorded a $19.193 billion operating loss. The unit covers Meta’s virtual- and augmented-reality products, including its longer-term metaverse and wearable strategy. A successful hardware and spatial-computing platform could add a new growth engine, but the current financial statements show that investors are funding that possibility through the profits of Family of Apps.

The loss also complicates simple margin comparisons. Meta’s consolidated 41% margin is excellent, yet the Family of Apps result is substantially stronger because Reality Labs absorbs a large operating loss. Investors who buy META are therefore underwriting both a mature advertising business and an expensive, uncertain product-development program.

Meta’s stated AI and wearable ambition

Meta expects 2026 capital expenditures of $115 billion to $135 billion, with infrastructure and artificial-intelligence work driving expense growth. Founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said in the company’s 2025 third-quarter release: “Meta Superintelligence Labs is off to a great start and we continue to lead the industry in AI glasses.” That statement identifies the strategic objective, not a separately reported profit stream.

Meta does not publish an isolated AI-revenue line or an AI return-on-invested-capital measure in the published filings. Its aggregate results show the spending commitment and the profitability of the overall company, but they do not prove how quickly AI infrastructure or AI glasses will earn back their cost.

Rank #2

What Alphabet adds to the long-term case

A broader revenue portfolio

Alphabet reported $402.836 billion of fiscal 2025 revenue and $129.039 billion of operating income, producing a 32% operating margin. Its reported revenue mix was:

Alphabet business FY2025 revenue Share of consolidated revenue, approximately
Google advertising $294.691 billion 73.2%
Subscriptions, platforms and devices $48.030 billion 11.9%
Google Cloud $58.705 billion 14.6%
Other Bets $1.537 billion 0.4%

Percentages are calculated from Alphabet’s reported segment totals and may not add to exactly 100% because of rounding. Advertising remains the largest business, but Alphabet has meaningful subscription, device, cloud and experimental operations alongside Search and YouTube.

Google Cloud is now an important profit contributor

Google Cloud revenue grew 36% in 2025 to $58.705 billion, while Cloud operating income increased by $7.8 billion year over year. That combination matters because it shows more than top-line expansion: the business is scaling while contributing more operating profit. Cloud also gives Alphabet an enterprise-sales channel and a way to monetize artificial-intelligence services outside consumer search.

Alphabet generated $164.7 billion of operating cash flow in 2025. Alphabet’s filing does not provide a directly comparable Meta operating-cash-flow figure, so a precise cash-conversion ranking cannot be made here. Alphabet’s cash generation nevertheless provides a clear measure of the resources available to fund infrastructure, acquisitions, shareholder returns and regulatory costs.

Alphabet’s diversification is useful but not complete protection

Google advertising still contributed nearly three-quarters of Alphabet’s 2025 revenue. Cloud, subscriptions and devices reduce dependence on one product, but they do not eliminate it. If search usage, ad pricing or the way users interact with search changes materially, Alphabet remains exposed even with a successful cloud business.

Revenue growth and durability

Where Meta has the recent-growth advantage

Meta’s reported results show faster recent core growth and stronger reported operating performance. Its Family of Apps produces a very large profit pool that can be reinvested in recommendation systems, data-center capacity, messaging and new interfaces. That reinvestment can reinforce user engagement and advertising demand.

The durability question is whether Meta can keep expanding without relying on a single favorable advertising cycle. Advertising is sensitive to economic conditions, brand budgets, privacy rules, measurement changes and competition for user attention. The company’s concentration means execution in its apps matters enormously to long-term returns.

Why Alphabet’s growth may be more durable in mix

Alphabet’s growth is spread across search advertising, YouTube and other advertising products, subscriptions and devices, Cloud, and Other Bets. Google Cloud’s 36% 2025 revenue growth and $7.8 billion year-over-year increase in operating income provide a second substantial growth vector alongside advertising.

That breadth may make Alphabet’s growth less dependent on one monetization system, but it can also produce uneven results. Search remains the financial center, while Other Bets contributes little revenue and may require long investment periods. Alphabet’s broad portfolio is therefore a diversification advantage, not a guarantee of lower volatility.

Margins, cash flow and the cost of investment

Meta’s margin advantage

Meta’s 41% consolidated operating margin exceeded Alphabet’s 32% in fiscal 2025. The difference reflects the economics of a large-scale advertising network and the fact that Meta’s Family of Apps generated $102.469 billion of operating income. Investors should not assume the gap will remain fixed: Meta’s 2026 AI infrastructure build-out and Reality Labs losses can pressure margins even if revenue continues to grow.

Alphabet’s cash-generation advantage

Alphabet’s $164.7 billion of 2025 operating cash flow is a significant source of financial flexibility. It can support the company’s cloud expansion, AI infrastructure, research programs and other corporate commitments. Operating cash flow is not the same as free cash flow, especially when capital expenditure is rising, so investors should watch the amount left after property and equipment spending rather than relying on the operating figure alone.

Why free-cash-flow conversion needs careful reading

The reported figures do not isolate a directly comparable free-cash-flow-conversion rate for both companies. Meta’s reported operating income, Alphabet’s operating cash flow and each company’s capex guidance measure different stages of the income-to-cash cycle. A fair comparison requires using the same period, the same definition of free cash flow and the latest annual or quarterly filings.

AI capital spending is the central long-term test

Company 2026 capex guidance Strategic question Evidence currently available
Meta $115–135 billion Can AI infrastructure improve recommendations, advertising efficiency and new products enough to offset higher costs and Reality Labs investment? Strong consolidated profitability and a profitable Family of Apps segment; no separately reported AI revenue or AI return metric.
Alphabet $175–185 billion Can AI protect and expand Search, accelerate Cloud and produce returns above the cost of data centers, chips and depreciation? Google Cloud grew 36% in 2025 and Cloud operating income rose $7.8 billion; no separately reported AI revenue or AI return metric.

Alphabet’s planned range is $40 billion to $70 billion higher than Meta’s, depending on where Meta’s range lands. Absolute spending should not be mistaken for superior or inferior efficiency: Alphabet is the larger company and operates a global search, video, cloud and infrastructure footprint. The relevant test is incremental return, not the headline dollar amount.

Neither company’s published figures isolate AI revenue or return on invested capital. Investors can observe aggregate revenue, operating income, depreciation, cash flow and capex, but cannot use the published filings to claim that one company has already achieved a measured AI return advantage.

Valuation: Meta was cheaper on the dated snapshot

At the October 15, 2026 close, Meta had an estimated market capitalization of about $1.88 trillion and a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 23.34. Alphabet’s market capitalization was about $4.27 trillion and its forward P/E was 26.22. On that single date, META therefore traded at the lower forward earnings multiple.

A lower P/E can indicate a better value, but it can also reflect higher perceived risk. Meta’s discount may reflect advertising concentration, Reality Labs losses, AI spending and regulatory exposure. Alphabet’s higher multiple may reflect expectations for Google Cloud, AI services and the broader portfolio. Forward P/E also depends on analyst earnings estimates, which can change before either company reports results.

Use the snapshot as an entry-point question rather than a conclusion: what growth and margin assumptions are embedded in each estimate, and would the expected return still meet your required return if capex stays high or regulation changes monetization?

Risk map for a long-term holder

Meta-specific risks

  • Advertising concentration: Family of Apps represented approximately 98.9% of 2025 revenue, leaving the company sensitive to ad demand, measurement and privacy changes.
  • Reality Labs losses: The unit lost $19.193 billion in 2025, and there is no stated timetable for breakeven.
  • AI infrastructure intensity: The $115–135 billion 2026 capex plan raises depreciation, energy, data-center and execution risks.
  • Regulation and privacy: Platform, data-use and competition rules can affect targeting, product design and the ability to combine data across services.
  • Talent costs: Competition for AI researchers and engineers can increase compensation and operating expense.

Alphabet-specific risks

  • Search substitution: AI interfaces could change how users discover information and how search queries are monetized.
  • Monetization changes: Alphabet says AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search and enterprise AI solutions may monetize differently from historical consumer and enterprise offerings, potentially affecting revenue growth and margin trends.
  • Infrastructure and depreciation: The $175–185 billion 2026 capex plan creates execution, utilization and depreciation pressure if demand develops more slowly than expected.
  • Cloud competition: Cloud growth is strong, but Alphabet competes intensely for enterprise workloads, AI customers and technical talent.
  • Antitrust remedies: Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K describes a December 2025 final judgment imposing search-distribution restrictions and data-sharing or syndication remedies. Alphabet appealed in January 2026, and ad-tech litigation continues. The eventual remedies could affect distribution, commercial agreements or monetization.

Is Alphabet safer than Meta?

Alphabet is arguably safer on business-mix grounds because it combines search, YouTube, subscriptions, devices, Cloud and other investments. Its $164.7 billion of 2025 operating cash flow and profitable Cloud operation add financial resilience. However, Alphabet still depends heavily on advertising, faces major AI-investment requirements and has significant unresolved antitrust exposure.

Meta has a narrower economic base and a larger visible drag from Reality Labs, so its results may be more sensitive to advertising and execution. Its 41% operating margin and lower observed forward P/E provide a stronger starting valuation and profitability profile. “Safer” therefore depends on whether you mean diversification, valuation, regulatory certainty or tolerance for drawdowns; Alphabet is not risk-free, and Meta is not simply a speculative company.

Which stock is better for different investors?

Meta may fit you if:

  • You prioritize faster recent core growth and a 41% reported operating margin.
  • You want the lower October 15, 2026 forward P/E of the two.
  • You believe AI recommendations, messaging, advertising tools and wearable products can extend the Family of Apps ecosystem.
  • You can tolerate advertising concentration, Reality Labs losses, high capex and regulatory uncertainty.

Alphabet may fit you if:

  • You prefer a wider mix of advertising, subscriptions, devices, Cloud and experimental businesses.
  • You value the evidence of Google Cloud’s 36% 2025 revenue growth and $7.8 billion increase in operating income.
  • You want substantial operating cash generation to fund investment and shareholder returns.
  • You accept a higher observed forward P/E, heavy AI spending and continuing search and ad-tech litigation.

A disciplined way to choose META or GOOGL

  1. Set your required return. Decide what annual return you need after inflation, taxes and portfolio costs. A cheaper multiple is not automatically attractive if the business fails to meet that hurdle.
  2. Choose your risk exposure. Write down whether you are more concerned about advertising concentration and Reality Labs or search disruption and antitrust remedies.
  3. Normalize the valuation. Compare forward P/E with a consistent earnings estimate and test what happens if growth slows, margins decline or capex remains elevated.
  4. Separate current earnings from option value. Treat Meta’s Reality Labs and Alphabet’s Other Bets as investments with uncertain payoffs, not as established profit engines.
  5. Check cash after investment. Review operating cash flow, capital expenditure, depreciation and resulting free cash flow in the latest filings.
  6. Size the position. Even a high-conviction choice can suffer a large drawdown when an advertising cycle, AI investment cycle or regulatory decision turns against it.
  7. Account for taxes and account type. Your jurisdiction, holding period and tax wrapper can change the after-tax result more than a small difference in forward P/E.

What to monitor after buying

  • Meta Family of Apps revenue, operating income and advertising trends.
  • Meta Reality Labs revenue, operating loss and evidence that spending is producing repeat demand.
  • Both companies’ actual capex versus the 2026 guidance ranges.
  • Alphabet Search and YouTube advertising trends as AI interfaces evolve.
  • Google Cloud revenue growth, operating margin and the durability of its $7.8 billion year-over-year operating-income improvement.
  • Operating cash flow, free cash flow and depreciation as AI infrastructure expands.
  • Antitrust appeals, search-distribution remedies, data-sharing requirements and ad-tech litigation.
  • Any future disclosure that isolates AI revenue, AI-related costs or returns; current filings do not provide a standalone AI return measure.

Bottom line

On the available 2025 results and October 15, 2026 valuation snapshot, Meta is the better value-and-growth choice: it reported the higher operating margin, faster recent core momentum and lower forward P/E. Alphabet is the better diversification-and-cash-generation choice: it has a broader portfolio, a fast-growing profitable Cloud business and $164.7 billion of 2025 operating cash flow. Neither is an unqualified winner. Select META if you accept concentration and Reality Labs risk in exchange for stronger current economics; select GOOGL if business breadth and Cloud expansion matter more than the higher multiple and substantial regulatory uncertainty.
