Before wearing Ray-Ban Meta glasses in public, open the Meta AI app and review four areas: captures, voice, notifications, and information shared with Meta. Also understand the difference between ordinary photos and videos that remain on the glasses until you transfer them, and a camera-based Meta AI request that sends an image and recognized speech to the AI model.
Keep the capture indicator visible, ask people before recording them, and avoid sensitive places or locations where privacy is expected. Meta’s public guidance describes the control categories, but menu names and availability can change by app version, glasses generation, account and region, so use the labels shown in your installed app rather than relying on a fixed tap-by-tap path.
Start with these privacy decisions
Privacy on Ray-Ban Meta glasses is not one master switch. It is a set of choices about what the glasses capture, when voice features can activate, what notifications appear, and what information you allow Meta to process or retain. Make those decisions before pairing the glasses or taking them into a workplace, school, home, clinic or other private setting.

- Voice and Meta AI: decide whether voice controls are enabled. Turning voice controls off prevents you from using Meta AI through that voice pathway.
- Notifications: review which alerts the glasses can announce or display, especially when other people may hear or see them.
- Information shared with Meta: inspect the app’s controls for viewing, managing or deleting information associated with Meta AI and related services.
Meta’s current product materials describe the glasses as managed through the Meta AI app. The exact controls can differ from the descriptions in older documentation, so confirm the setting’s current wording and scope on your device.

Open the Meta AI app before first use
- Pair and update the glasses and app. Complete the normal setup, then install any offered firmware or app update. Privacy controls can move when software changes.
- Review capture preferences. Look for settings covering photos, videos, gallery behavior and streaming. Read whether a choice affects only storage, or also the ability to use a feature.
- Review voice controls. Decide whether the glasses should respond to voice commands and whether you want Meta AI available. Meta’s system-card documentation says voice controls can be turned on or off.
- Review notification preferences. Check which notifications are spoken, shown or mirrored from the phone. Choose settings that do not reveal private message content in public.
- Review information-sharing and activity controls. Use the app’s current labels to view or manage information associated with Meta AI, including available deletion choices.
- Check permissions. Confirm the phone permissions the app requests, including photos, microphone, Bluetooth and location. Grant only what you need for the features you intend to use, while recognizing that restricting a permission can disable a feature.
- Test the indicator. Take a test photo in a private place and verify that the notification and capture LEDs activate. Never place tape, a cover or another obstruction over the capture indicator.
Meta does not publish a durable, screen-by-screen menu sequence for every current version. If a label in your app differs from the wording above, use the closest privacy, capture, voice or information-management category and read its explanation before enabling it.
Know which data flow you are using
The most important distinction is between media captured for your gallery and an intentional request that uses the camera with Meta AI. They are different actions with different handling described by Meta.

“Everything you capture on your glasses stays on your glasses until you choose to move them onto your phone using the Meta AI app,” Meta says in its responsible-innovation guidance. That statement describes the user’s capture and gallery flow; it is not a promise that no information is transmitted in any circumstance. A deliberate camera-based AI request is the key exception documented in Meta’s system card.

Keep the capture and notification LEDs unobstructed
Taking a photo, recording video for the gallery or streaming activates the notification and capture LEDs, according to Meta. The indicator is intended to tell people nearby that the glasses are actively capturing. Meta also says its features prohibit photo or video capture when the LED is covered and that deliberately covering it while recording is not allowed.
- Inspect the LED before every use, especially after fitting a case, skin, accessory or replacement lens.
- Do not cover, disable, dim or modify the indicator to make recording less noticeable.
- If the LED does not behave as expected, stop capturing and troubleshoot the glasses and app rather than assuming recording is private.
- Remember that an indicator communicates capture; it does not obtain consent for you. Ask people first.
Streaming is included in the same indicator rule as ordinary gallery capture. If you are in a meeting, class, changing room, medical setting or another place where recording is restricted, leave the capture function unused even if the LED is visible.
Ask permission and avoid places where privacy is expected
Meta’s guidance places responsibility for bystander privacy on the wearer. It says to ask permission before capturing people and to avoid sensitive locations, places you would not want to be captured, or places where there is an expectation of privacy.

Ask before recording people
Explain what you intend to do: take a still photo, record video, stream, or ask Meta AI about something in view. Consent for one action does not automatically cover another. A person who agrees to a group photo may not agree to live streaming or AI analysis.

Use extra caution around health information, financial records, identity documents, children, confidential work materials, private conversations and secure facilities. Do not point the camera at a laptop, whiteboard, patient chart, badge or screen merely to test recognition.
Respect local rules
Recording and consent laws vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Company policies, school rules, venue policies and professional obligations can be stricter than the product’s technical controls. Follow the rule that applies to the location and the people involved.

Decide whether you need voice controls and Meta AI
Voice controls make hands-free commands possible, but they also create a pathway in which spoken prompts can be recognized and used by Meta AI. If you do not need that feature, turning voice controls off is the simplest way to remove the voice route from your routine.
When voice controls are useful
They can help when your hands are occupied or when you need an accessibility feature. Enable them only after you understand which commands activate the assistant and which functions require an internet connection or phone permissions.
When to leave them off
Keep voice controls disabled in environments where accidental activation, audible responses or spoken prompts could expose confidential information. You can revisit the choice in the Meta AI app if your needs change.

Deleting voice recordings
Meta says users can delete Meta AI voice recordings. It also says deleted information will not be used for future training, while deleting an item does not immediately change what a model has already learned. Treat deletion as removal of the stored item under the stated control, not as an instant reset of model behavior.
Manage location, gallery and phone permissions
Meta’s system-card description includes controls to adjust location permissions, view and manage information, and delete gallery media. Because that system card was last updated on December 12, 2023, use it as a description of documented capabilities rather than a guarantee that every current screen looks the same.
- Location: set location access to the least permissive option that still supports the feature you want. Recheck after an app or operating-system update.
- Photos: allow photo-library access only as needed to transfer or save captures. Review whether your phone automatically backs up the transferred media.
- Microphone: understand that denying microphone access can disable voice controls or voice-based AI requests.
- Bluetooth and nearby-device access: these are generally needed for pairing and synchronization; verify the app’s explanation before changing them.
Deleting a file from the glasses, the app, the phone’s photo roll and a cloud backup are separate actions unless the current product documentation explicitly links them. Check each location when removing sensitive media.
Do Ray-Ban Meta glasses record all the time?
There is no basis for treating every moment the glasses are worn as a recording. Meta distinguishes ordinary capture from deliberate camera-based AI requests, and it says photos, videos and streaming activate the LEDs. However, that distinction is not permission to assume that every AI interaction is local: when you intentionally ask camera-based Meta AI to interpret what the glasses see, Meta’s system card says the image and recognized spoken prompt can be sent to the model.
The practical rule is simple: watch the indicator, avoid restricted environments, and do not issue an AI camera request toward someone or something you are not allowed to share. If you need complete privacy, remove the glasses or disable the relevant controls rather than relying on assumptions about standby behavior.

What to do if a privacy control is missing or behaves differently
- Confirm the app and glasses generation. Meta’s current store materials describe Gen 2 glasses, while older support documents may describe earlier software.
- Check account and region availability. Features and labels can vary by country, language, account type and rollout stage.
- Update, then reopen the app. Recheck the privacy categories after installing updates.
- Read the setting description. Do not infer that a control covers both gallery media and AI requests unless the text says so.
- Stop using the feature if the indicator or consent process is unclear. Privacy is safer when you can explain what is captured, where it goes and how to delete it.
- Contact official support for account-specific behavior. Record the app version, glasses generation and exact setting label when reporting a problem.

- Gallery-transfer, phone-photo and cloud-backup behavior understood.
- Voice-recording and media-deletion controls located.
