Meta says Gen 3 lasts up to nine hours, while its September 2025 announcement rated Gen 2 for up to eight hours with typical use. Those figures come from separate product announcements, not a controlled battery comparison. Gen 2 is still a sensible choice if its 3K video, open-ear audio and included charging case meet your needs, especially where Gen 3 is not yet sold or costs substantially more.
The practical choice depends less on camera resolution—both generations use a 12 MP camera and 3K video—and more on fit, call performance, charging arrangements, frame options and your local price. The specifications and availability below are manufacturer statements, with regional limits called out.

What changed from Gen 2 to Gen 3?
A slimmer frame and adjustable temples
Meta presents Gen 3 as a slimmer design with professional-adjustable temple tips. That change matters if standard frames press behind your ears, sit too loosely, or need fine adjustment after an optician fits prescription lenses. “Professional-adjustable” does not mean every owner should bend the temples at home; have an optician or trained retailer make adjustments so the hinges, electronics and lens alignment are not damaged.

Gen 2’s regional descriptions cover several frame and optical configurations, but they do not establish that every Gen 2 shape or lens is available in every country. If you already know that a particular Gen 2 frame fits you, its availability may be a stronger buying factor than the generation number.

A new microphone arrangement
Gen 3 includes a six-microphone array. Meta says the array reduces more than 90% of background noise. That number is a vendor claim rather than a published independent measurement, so use it as an indication of Meta’s design goal, not as a guarantee that calls will sound 90% cleaner in a café, on a train or in wind.
The cited Gen 2 material does not provide an equivalent microphone count or noise-reduction figure. If voice commands and calls are central to your use, Gen 3 has the clearer specification advantage, but test it in the environments where you actually speak.
A customizable action button
Meta lists a customizable action button among Gen 3’s changes. The announcement establishes the hardware and customization capability but does not define one universal set of assignments for every software version or region. Check the current companion-app menu when you buy; available actions can change with firmware and account features.

Meta rates Gen 3 for up to nine hours and Gen 2 for up to eight hours with typical use. The generations were announced a year apart, and Meta did not publish a controlled test using the same brightness, audio volume, camera activity, network conditions and standby pattern. Treat the figures as separate manufacturer ratings, not proof that Gen 3 will always run exactly one hour longer.
How much longer does Gen 3 battery last?
On paper, Gen 3’s maximum is one hour higher: nine hours versus Gen 2’s eight-hour typical-use rating. In practice, cameras, calls, audio volume, assistant requests, wireless connectivity and temperature can all change runtime. A person recording frequently may see less time than someone mostly listening to audio, while a wearer who spends long periods idle may approach a different result.

Gen 2 has a concrete charging advantage documented by Meta. Its included case provides up to 48 additional hours of charging on the go, and Meta says the glasses can reach 50% charge in 20 minutes. The cited Gen 3 announcements do not state the case’s total capacity or the same 20-minute charging figure. Confirm exactly what is in the local Gen 3 package before comparing travel endurance.
Is the Gen 3 camera better?
Both generations are described as using a 12 MP camera and capturing 3K Ultra HD video. Gen 2’s September 2025 launch announcement specifically says 3K video can reach up to 60 frames per second, along with ultrawide HDR. Meta’s cited Gen 3 announcement confirms 3K Ultra HD video but does not state a frame rate.
Because the resolution is the same and the available Gen 3 announcement omits a directly comparable frame-rate figure, the evidence does not support calling Gen 3 the sharper or smoother camera. Image quality can still differ because of lens design, processing, stabilization, exposure tuning and software updates, but no independent camera test or controlled side-by-side result is established here.
Choose Gen 2 if its documented 3K, up-to-60-fps capability is important and its price or availability is better. Choose Gen 3 for its newer physical design and battery rating, not on the assumption that 12 MP automatically means a better image.
Audio, calls and voice commands
Gen 2 is described as providing open-ear audio, allowing you to hear playback while remaining aware of surrounding sound. Gen 3’s announcement focuses on the six-microphone array rather than publishing a new speaker specification. Therefore, the available evidence supports a Gen 3 advantage in microphone hardware, but it does not establish a winner for speaker loudness, bass, leakage or overall listening quality.

For calls, compare the situations that cause trouble for you: traffic, wind, crowded rooms and quiet indoor meetings. The more than 90% background-noise-reduction statement belongs to Meta and is not an independent laboratory result. A shop demonstration can reveal fit and basic voice pickup, but it cannot predict every network, app or firmware condition.

Frame selection
Meta’s May 21, 2026 Japan announcement describes Gen 2 sunglasses, optical models and lens options that include prescription-compatible configurations. Those descriptions are regional. They do not prove that every color, frame width or lens treatment is sold in your country today.
Meta’s October 1, 2026 India announcement lists Gen 3 in Aviator, Zena and Wayfarer styles, with 27 color and lens combinations. That is an India-specific announcement, not a universal catalog. Other markets may have fewer or different combinations.
Prescription buying checklist
- Ask an authorized optical provider which generation, frame shape and lens type are currently eligible for your prescription.
- Confirm whether single-vision, progressive, high-index, photochromic or other treatments are accepted; the cited announcements do not provide a complete prescription matrix.
- Have the provider measure pupillary distance and adjust the temples. Gen 3’s professional-adjustable tips may help, but they do not replace accurate measurements.
- Check the return policy before ordering a prescription configuration, because a frame that is comfortable without lenses may balance differently after glazing.
Charging and what comes in the box
Gen 2’s package is documented as including a charging case. Meta rates that case for up to 48 additional hours of charging and says the glasses can reach 50% in 20 minutes. The case is therefore part of Gen 2’s travel value, not merely an optional accessory.
The cited Gen 3 material does not establish the case’s capacity, charging speed or whether every regional bundle includes the same case. Do not assume that a Gen 2 case is interchangeable with Gen 3 or that a separately sold compatible case exists. Privacy and recording indicators
Meta’s July 7, 2026 privacy FAQ says each pair has a white capture LED that blinks when content is being captured for your gallery. Meta also states that covering or disabling the LED automatically disables the camera. This is the company’s described product behavior, not a complete answer to consent, venue rules, data retention or how AI features process information.
Before recording, follow local law and the rules of the place you are visiting. Tell people when a conversation or event is being recorded where consent is required, and do not treat the LED as permission to record in restricted locations. If the indicator does not behave as expected, stop using the camera and check the current device and app settings rather than attempting to defeat the indicator.
Price and availability by market
Meta’s October 1, 2026 announcement says Gen 3 is available in India starting at INR 44,300. That is a starting price for India at the date of the announcement; it does not establish a global MSRP, tax-inclusive price, or local stock in another country.
Gen 2 pricing and configurations vary by region, and the cited material does not provide one worldwide price. Compare the final local price for the exact frame, lens, prescription work, taxes, warranty and return terms. A Gen 2 discount can be compelling if you value the included case, while a small price gap may favor Gen 3’s fit and microphone updates.

Buy Gen 3 if fit is your main concern
The slimmer body and adjustable temple tips are the clearest physical changes. They are especially relevant if you wear glasses for long periods, need an optical frame, or have had trouble with pressure behind your ears. The benefit is a reason to try Gen 3 in person, not a promise that every face will find it more comfortable.

Buy Gen 3 for calls and voice interaction
The six-microphone array gives Gen 3 a documented hardware difference. Meta’s claimed noise reduction may help in difficult environments, but the lack of independent testing means you should evaluate real call samples before relying on it professionally.
Buy Gen 3 when you want the newest battery rating
Gen 3’s up-to-nine-hour rating is the newer claim. It is useful for planning a day, but your actual result will depend on recording, audio and connectivity. If you need guaranteed all-day capture, neither announcement provides a runtime guarantee under your exact workload.
