Meta Quest 3 is a wireless, all-in-one headset for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR). You can use it to enter a fully virtual environment or view your physical room through color cameras while digital objects appear within it. It works as a standalone headset; connecting it to a PC for PC VR is an optional capability, not a basic requirement.

What Meta Quest 3 is

Meta Quest 3 is a headset in Meta’s Quest line, powered by Meta Horizon OS. It is designed to put a display in front of each eye and track the wearer’s head and hands so digital experiences can respond to their movements. The device supports two related but distinct modes: virtual reality, which immerses you in a virtual place, and mixed reality, which combines virtual content with a view of your surroundings.

“All-in-one” and “standalone” describe how the headset can be used: it is not inherently dependent on a separate computer to run its headset experiences. Meta also lists PC VR support through Quest Link, using either a cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi. That is an additional way to use it, not a prerequisite for using the headset at all.

In practical terms, Quest 3 is neither simply a screen strapped to your face nor a glasses-only display. It is a tracked computing device with onboard memory, a processor, cameras, speakers, controllers, and a display system. What you see depends on the experience: a wholly virtual scene, or digital content layered over a camera view of the room.

VR and mixed reality: what is the difference?

Virtual reality

In VR, the headset presents a virtual environment as the primary view. The experience can make it feel as though you have been transported to another place, rather than looking at the room you are physically in. Head and hand tracking allow supported experiences to respond to movement. VR is the better description when the digital environment replaces the visible surroundings.

Mixed reality

In MR, virtual objects and the physical environment coexist. A digital object might appear positioned in your room, for example, rather than against an entirely virtual background. Meta describes MR as blending virtual objects with the user’s physical environment so experiences can respond to and integrate with the real world. The word “mixed” matters: the room remains part of what you see, rather than being wholly replaced.

Quest 3 supports both modes, so calling it only a VR headset leaves out its mixed-reality capability. Conversely, MR support does not mean every app or experience is mixed reality; the application determines how it uses the headset’s display, tracking, and cameras.

How passthrough and the depth sensor work

To show the room while you wear a closed headset, Quest 3 uses passthrough: cameras capture the environment in real time, and the headset displays that camera feed. In mixed-reality experiences, an app can render virtual content over the feed. Meta identifies Quest 3’s passthrough as full color and stereoscopic, with depth estimation supported by a dedicated depth sensor.

Depth information helps the system understand the relative position of physical surfaces and objects. Meta says this can allow physical objects to appear in front of virtual objects, helping digital content fit into a room more convincingly. This describes a capability of the system; it does not mean every virtual object will automatically interact perfectly with every real object. The app’s implementation still matters.

Passthrough is a camera-based view, not direct vision through transparent lenses. The official specifications identify the cameras as color stereoscopic and list a 4 MP specification. In other words, MR uses a mediated view of the surroundings, with virtual imagery composited into it; it is not the same as seeing the room unaided.

Meta Quest 3 specifications that identify the headset

Resolution is stated per eye, rather than as one combined figure for both displays. Refresh rate, expressed in hertz, is the maximum listed rate at which the display can update; the table’s 120 Hz figure is a ceiling, not a claim that every experience runs at that rate. The field-of-view figures describe the listed horizontal and vertical viewing angles. These numbers help identify the hardware, but they do not by themselves guarantee how a particular app will look or perform.

The continuous IPD slider adjusts the spacing between the lenses to suit different users’ interpupillary distances. That is a physical adjustment feature, distinct from display resolution or tracking. The audio and connection specifications also describe different functions: built-in speakers and a headphone jack address sound, while Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and USB-C cover wireless connections and a physical port.

Does Quest 3 need a PC?

No. Meta describes Quest 3 as an all-in-one headset, and its listed PC VR options are Quest Link by cable and Air Link over Wi-Fi. A PC is therefore an optional route for compatible PC VR use, rather than something the headset inherently requires. Someone who wants a standalone headset can use Quest 3 without treating a PC as part of the basic definition.

Meta Quest 3S 128GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset (Renewed Premium)
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once.

  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

Do not confuse “can connect to a PC” with “is a PC headset only.” The distinction affects what you need to get started: standalone use relies on the headset as an all-in-one device, whereas choosing PC VR adds a computer-based connection path. The listed Air Link option uses Wi-Fi; the comparison does not establish a particular PC specification, router requirement, or guaranteed wireless performance, so those details should not be inferred from the connection name alone.

Quest 3 versus Quest 3S

Quest 3 and Quest 3S share several core entries in Meta’s comparison: both use the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, have 8 GB of memory and LCD displays, support a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz, offer head and hand tracking, and provide color passthrough. Their distinguishing listed features are useful if you are trying to understand what the Quest 3 name signifies rather than treating the two models as interchangeable.

Listed feature Quest 3 Quest 3S
Resolution per eye 2064 × 2208 pixels 1832 × 1920 pixels
Field of view 110° horizontal × 96° vertical 96° horizontal × 90° vertical
Depth sensor Listed Not listed in Meta’s comparison
IPD adjustment Continuous slider Three preset settings
Estimated battery life Approximately two hours Approximately 2.5 hours

The comparison makes Quest 3’s higher per-eye resolution, wider listed field of view, depth sensor, and continuous IPD adjustment concrete differences. The battery figures are estimates from Meta, not guaranteed session lengths. The table is a comparison of the attributes listed by Meta; it does not establish current prices, all differences between the models, or which device is the better choice for every user.

These differences are useful context, but they do not make Quest 3 and Quest 3S the same product with a different label. In particular, Quest 3’s listed depth sensor and continuously adjustable IPD distinguish its hardware in Meta’s comparison. If those features matter to your intended use, check the exact model name rather than relying on the shared chipset or color-passthrough description alone.

What the launch-era claims and price mean

Meta announced Quest 3 on June 1, 2023, with a launch price of US$499.99 for the 128 GB configuration. That is a historical launch price, not a current retail quote or evidence of present availability. Current pricing, storage configurations, regional bundles, and stock are not established by that announcement.

Meta Quest 3 512GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset — Renewed Premium
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Play, explore and exercise in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.

In the same June 2023 announcement, Meta said the next-generation Snapdragon chipset delivered more than twice the graphical performance of the previous-generation Snapdragon GPU in Quest 2. This is Meta’s vendor claim, not an independent benchmark result. The launch announcement also described Quest 3 as offering “the best of VR and MR”; that is Meta’s product characterization, not an outside evaluation.

Room use, power, and practical expectations

Meta lists both stationary and room-scale play areas, with a minimum room-scale area of 6.5 × 6.5 feet. That figure is the manufacturer’s stated minimum for room-scale use, not a claim that every experience needs that much space. Stationary use is also listed, so the room-scale measurement should not be mistaken for a universal minimum footprint for wearing the headset.

For portable use, the manufacturer’s comparison gives Quest 3 an approximate two-hour battery estimate. Actual runtime is not guaranteed by that number; the comparison does not specify a test procedure or usage conditions. Treat it as a planning estimate rather than a promise about the length of a session. The presence of a USB-C connector is a hardware specification; it does not by itself establish charging speed or play-while-charging behavior.

Finally, listed specifications can change with software, region, package, or later product updates. The figures above reflect Meta’s device comparison as updated September 18, 2026, while launch statements are dated to June 2023. For a purchase decision, verify the current official comparison and the exact offer details rather than treating historical announcements as current availability information.

What to check before buying or linking to a listing

Quest 3 is the name of the headset itself; Meta Quest Touch Plus controllers are listed as included with Quest 3, while Meta also identifies controllers as an accessory/peripheral path. A specific listing may describe a package or bundle, so check the exact model, storage configuration, seller, and included contents before treating two offers as equivalent. Current prices, inventory, regional bundles, and affiliate availability are not established by the historical launch announcement or the device comparison cited here.

If you are comparing Quest 3 with Quest 3S, the research-supported decision points are per-eye resolution, field of view, depth-sensing hardware, continuous versus preset IPD adjustment, battery estimate, and the current price you can verify. Meta’s published battery figures are approximate—about two hours for Quest 3 and about 2.5 hours for Quest 3S—not promised runtimes. The available comparison does not establish current prices, so avoid treating a past launch figure as today’s offer.
