Meta Muse is a personal AI agent that Meta says can carry out multi-step tasks across the web and apps you connect. You can message it through the Muse app or WhatsApp, describe a task or longer-term goal, and choose what services it may access. Muse is the agent experience; Muse Spark is the model Meta says powers it. The capabilities and safeguards described here are Meta’s own product and technical descriptions, not independent performance findings.

What is Meta Muse?

Muse is designed to do more than answer a prompt: Meta describes it as software that can plan and act across multiple steps, using a browser and connected services. You might ask it to find information, prepare a document, or work through a task that involves an app you have authorized. Meta’s launch announcement identifies Muse Spark as the model behind the agent. The two names refer to different parts of the product: Muse is the assistant and task-running experience; Muse Spark is its underlying model.

How does Meta Muse work?

  1. You describe the task. Start in the Muse app or WhatsApp and state what you want done. Meta says Muse can identify the skills it needs, browse the web, retrieve information from connected apps, and work through multiple steps.
  2. Muse works in a cloud environment. Meta says the agent uses a dedicated cloud virtual machine with a browser, storage, and computing resources. Its technical description says that environment is isolated and supports custom skills and concurrent subagents. Meta also says Muse can create custom connectors for services that provide an API or command-line interface. See Meta AI Research’s technical description.
  3. You select connected services and permissions. Access depends on what you connect and authorize. Where a service supports it, Meta says you can distinguish read access from write access—for example, allowing Muse to read email without allowing it to send messages. You can change permissions or disconnect services.
  4. Some actions may need your approval. Meta says its Sentinel system evaluates connector actions and network requests and can allow, deny, or ask you. Sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase may require approval. Meta says users can inspect an audit trail of what Muse has done and plans to do.
  5. Longer tasks can continue in the background. Meta says Muse can keep working after you close the app and return when something changes or it needs a decision. That does not mean every task will finish without your involvement: permissions, approvals, and the task itself can all affect what happens next.

What can Meta Muse do?

Meta lists question answering, web browsing, purchases, image generation, document creation, connected-app actions, reminders, goal tracking, and monitoring topics a user cares about. Its examples describe possible uses, not independently verified success rates.

  • Research and web tasks: Ask it to find information or use its browser to work through a task, such as filling out a form.
  • Connected-app tasks: If you connect an email service, for example, Muse’s ability to read or send messages depends on the access you grant and any approval it requests.
  • Planning and follow-up: Meta says Muse can turn a longer-term goal into a plan, track progress, and suggest next steps.
  • Personalized suggestions: Meta gives the example of using an Instagram recipe reel you saved to create a grocery list and plan a dinner party around dietary restrictions it remembers.
  • Creative and document work: Meta says Muse can generate images and create documents. The cited material does not provide independent comparative quality results for those features.
  • Purchases and travel: Meta describes using Muse to book travel, make purchases, or negotiate on a user’s behalf. Those examples should be understood as company-described capabilities; the available descriptions do not establish that every service or transaction is supported or completed without user review.

What are Muse’s privacy and safety controls?

Meta describes several controls intended to limit what the agent can access and do. It says each user’s Muse runs in a dedicated virtual machine, credentials are stored separately from the main agent, and Sentinel governs connector actions and network requests. Approval requests can be scoped to a connector, destination, and use case. You can choose which apps to connect, adjust access, disconnect services, review activity, and ask Muse to forget specific learned information.

Meta says Muse conversations and virtual-machine data are not shared with its ad systems, and that users can opt out of interactions being used to train Meta AI models. Its technical post also says Muse data is stored in the virtual machine and that limited data may be sent out for inference and telemetry. It describes the use of sanitized interaction trajectories for some training, subject to an opt-out setting. Meta’s planned Muse Confidential VM is intended to prevent Meta from accessing virtual-machine data; the cited announcement does not describe that capability as launched. These statements do not establish that Meta cannot access any Muse data under the launch-era design.

What are the limitations?

Meta acknowledges that Muse can make mistakes and that prompt injection remains an open problem. Prompt injection is an attempt to manipulate an AI system through instructions embedded in content it encounters, such as a web page. Approval gates and permission controls can reduce the scope of some actions, but they do not make the agent infallible. Meta’s Tarek Sheasha said: “Muse can and will still make mistakes, but we expect they’ll be much less frequent and cause much less damage due to the safety systems we’ve built in.” This is Meta’s expectation, not a measured independent finding.

Where is Meta Muse available, and what does it cost?

Meta’s September 2026 launch announcement described a rollout in the United States on iOS, Android, and the web. It said Muse would be free for most needs, with subscription plans for people who want to do more, but did not state exact prices in the cited material. Availability, usage limits, and subscription details can change; check Meta’s current Muse product page for current terms. The launch announcement described AI glasses as a future availability direction, not as a platform available at launch.
