Short answer: Meta Muse is the currently announced product in this comparison, rolling out in the United States after its September 2026 launch. OpenAI’s current Help Center article says, “ChatGPT agent is no longer available,” and directs users to ChatGPT Work for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables. That article does not confirm that ChatGPT Work reproduces the former agent’s browser automation, connected-app actions, or payment workflows. Muse therefore has the clearer documented agent feature set today, while a like-for-like comparison with ChatGPT Work remains unverified.
Current status: this is not a comparison of two currently equivalent products
Product status changes the answer before features or privacy are considered. Meta announced Muse in September 2026 and describes it as rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android, and the web, with a future path to its AI glasses. OpenAI’s current Help Center page says ChatGPT agent is no longer available. It points people who need longer multi-step work and finished deliverables toward ChatGPT Work, but the same page does not document whether Work has the old agent’s browser, app, or background-task capabilities.
What is established about Muse
Meta describes Muse as an agent that can work across connected applications and a browser. Its examples include completing forms, handling email, arranging travel, and pursuing longer-running goals. Muse can remember relevant details, make suggestions, and continue a task after the user closes the app. Meta lists the Muse app, WhatsApp, and the web as entry points for the rollout.

The former ChatGPT agent was described as able to use apps, operate a virtual browser, pause for user guidance, and schedule recurring tasks. Those descriptions are now historical. They should not be presented as features you can activate in ChatGPT today. The current OpenAI documentation names ChatGPT Work as the successor path for longer tasks, but does not establish feature parity.

How to interpret the rest of this article
Where Meta documents Muse behavior, it is reported as Meta’s product and safety description, not as an independent security audit. Where OpenAI’s current page discusses the former agent, those details are labeled as legacy behavior. Unknown capabilities of ChatGPT Work are marked as not established rather than inferred from the old agent.

How Muse is designed to work
Connected applications and longer-running goals
Muse is positioned as an agent rather than only a chat interface. Meta’s examples involve carrying out a sequence across an email account, a form, a travel site, or another connected service. The agent may keep working after the user leaves the app, which is useful for tasks that involve waiting, collecting information, or completing several dependent steps.
Meta also says Muse remembers relevant details and can make suggestions. That can reduce repeated setup, but it means users should inspect what the system remembers and remove information they no longer want retained. Meta says users can inspect, edit, and download files, including Muse’s memory about them.

Payments through Link
Meta says Muse can use Link’s wallet and one-time-use card details. For eligible purchases, Meta says Link purchase protections apply. The company also says purchase flows require human approval showing the exact purchase details. That approval is a checkpoint, not a guarantee that the merchant, item, quantity, or shipping information is correct; the user must still read the confirmation.
Entry points and rollout limits
The announced rollout covers the United States and lists iOS, Android, the web, and WhatsApp. Meta also announced future AI-glasses availability, not a generally available glasses product at launch. Availability, language support, account eligibility, and subscription limits may vary as rollout expands.

How the former ChatGPT agent worked—and what is unknown about ChatGPT Work
Documented legacy behavior
OpenAI’s former agent-mode documentation described a guided or interruptible agent that could use enabled apps and signed-in websites. It could schedule recurring tasks, operate a virtual browser, and ask the user to take over for sensitive input. OpenAI described confirmations for high-impact actions, refusal behavior for disallowed tasks, prompt-injection monitoring, and a “watch mode” that required supervision on certain sites.
Those details explain what the discontinued product was intended to do. They do not prove that ChatGPT Work offers the same controls. OpenAI’s current page directs users to Work for longer multi-step tasks and finished deliverables without specifying browser automation, persistent background execution, payment support, or equivalent app connectors.
Organization controls described by OpenAI
For Enterprise and Edu workspaces, OpenAI’s article describes workspace toggles, role-based access controls, app-availability controls, website blocking, and data-residency or custom-retention behavior. It says agent conversations appeared in Compliance API logs, while individual agent actions did not. These statements belong to the documented agent feature and should not automatically be attributed to ChatGPT Work until OpenAI documents them for Work.
Permissions and safeguards
Muse: proposal first, Sentinel authorization second
Meta describes a layered architecture. Muse proposes a connector action, while a separate host-side component called Sentinel checks the user’s policy and decides whether the action is allowed, denied, or requires the user. Meta also says Sentinel governs network egress, so permission is not limited to whether an app connector is enabled.
Meta’s built-in connector workers receive scoped access to credentials. The agent is said to see surrogate tokens rather than the real credentials. For email, Meta says the connector filters one-time codes, password-reset links, and login magic links. Those filters reduce the chance that an agent will consume a credential-recovery message, but they do not remove the need to secure the mailbox itself.

Muse browser controls
Meta describes a Chromium-based browser behind a virtualization layer. The user can see the browser and take control. The browser sub-agent receives an accessibility-tree snapshot rather than raw document-object-model access, cannot run JavaScript in the page context, and is paused during user takeover or secure credential entry. Meta says purchase actions prompt for human approval with the exact details.
Former ChatGPT agent controls
OpenAI described confirmation prompts for high-impact actions and a takeover mode for sensitive login fields. It advised users to enable only the apps they needed, supervise certain websites, and clear remote browser data after sensitive sessions. OpenAI also warned that prompt injection could cause unintended actions when connected websites or apps contain hostile instructions.
What the architectures do not prove
A separate permission service, scoped tokens, an accessibility tree, screenshots, or a takeover pause are design safeguards, not independent proof that every attack is blocked. Neither company claims zero risk. Meta explicitly says Muse can make mistakes and that prompt injection remains an open problem. OpenAI likewise warns that connected services can expose sensitive information and that prompt injection can lead to unintended actions.
Credentials and browser visibility

The practical distinction is visibility. Muse’s described sub-agent receives a structured accessibility representation and is blocked from running page JavaScript, while the former OpenAI agent relied on screenshots and user takeover. Neither description should be read as a guarantee that credentials can never leak through a connected service, browser page, clipboard, or user mistake.
Privacy, retention, and model training
Muse virtual-machine data
Meta says files and generated or used data are stored in the user’s Muse virtual machine. Connected credentials and tokens are stored separately in an isolated container within that VM. The VM is continuously backed up, and users can inspect, edit, and download files and Muse’s memory about them.

Meta says Muse conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta’s advertising systems. That statement does not mean web activity has no advertising consequences: Meta notes that an agent-initiated visit can indirectly affect ads, such as when a merchant later shows an ad based on the visit.
Meta also says sanitized interaction trajectories may be used to train future model checkpoints by default. Users can opt out through Muse settings. Therefore, “not shared with ad systems” and “never used for training” are different claims.
Meta personnel access and Confidential VM
Meta describes operational policies that restrict personnel access to current Muse data, but it does not promise that Meta can never access the environment when access is needed to support, secure, or operate the service. Meta’s stronger Confidential VM design is described as a future capability planned for later in 2026. Meta says a small group of testers is using it while external audit work proceeds; it should not be treated as generally available or as the default Muse architecture.
OpenAI retention and deletion
OpenAI says former agent chats, browsing history, and screenshots remain in conversation history until the user deletes them. Deleted chats and associated screenshots are removed from OpenAI’s systems within 90 days. That is a deletion window, not an instant-erasure promise.
Users can turn off model training for new conversations in ChatGPT’s Data Controls. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu business data is not used for training by default. Plus and Pro data is handled under the privacy policy and may be used for model improvement if the user opted in. Authorized staff and service providers may access agent content for stated purposes such as security, support, legal matters, or model improvement when the user has not opted out.

Privacy questions that should be kept separate
- Advertising: whether conversation or VM data is fed to ad systems.
- Training: whether sanitized interactions or conversations can improve future models.
- Retention: how long chats, screenshots, files, and backups remain.
- Operational access: when staff or service providers may access content.
- Credential exposure: what the agent or a connected service can see while acting.
A product can make a favorable statement in one category without making the same promise in the others.

A safe way to evaluate either service
- Start with a low-impact task. Use a non-sensitive form, public information lookup, or draft email. Do not begin with banking, password recovery, medical records, or an account containing broad administrative privileges.
- Enable only the required connectors. Remove unused app access. For a task that needs email but not calendar or cloud storage, do not authorize the extra services.
- Review the proposed action before approval. Check the destination, recipient, item, quantity, amount, permissions, and any attached files. A human confirmation is useful only if the details are read.
- Take over for credentials and one-time codes. Enter sensitive login information yourself. Do not paste passwords into chat or allow an agent to read password-reset links or authentication codes.
- Watch for prompt injection. Treat instructions embedded in webpages, documents, email, and search results as untrusted content. An instruction that tells the agent to ignore your task, reveal secrets, or change permissions is a warning sign.
- Limit the task’s blast radius. Use a dedicated account, minimal balance, restricted folder, or test workspace when possible. Avoid giving an agent permanent administrator rights for a one-time job.
- Inspect stored data. For Muse, review VM files and remembered details. For ChatGPT, review conversation history and delete sensitive chats or screenshots when appropriate.
- Apply organization controls. Administrators should review app availability, website restrictions, retention settings, role assignments, and compliance-log behavior before enabling agent-like work for a team.
- Confirm the current product documentation. Muse rollout, Work capabilities, plan limits, and privacy controls can change. A setting documented for the discontinued agent should not be assumed to exist in Work.
Plans, pricing, and availability gaps
Meta says Muse is free for most needs and that subscriptions will be available for people who want to do more. The announcement does not state subscription prices, usage limits, regional expansion dates, or exactly which capabilities are reserved for paid tiers.
OpenAI’s cited Help Center article lists plan eligibility information for agent mode while also stating that the agent is discontinued. It does not provide ChatGPT Work pricing. There is therefore no defensible price comparison from the available official descriptions. Check the product’s current plan page before making a purchasing decision.

If you need a currently announced agent that can work across connected apps and a browser, Muse is the better-documented choice, subject to its United States rollout and your acceptance of Meta’s storage and training settings. Its Sentinel permission layer, scoped connector credentials, accessibility-tree browser view, and approval checkpoints are meaningful design distinctions, but they remain vendor-described safeguards.
If you were specifically looking for ChatGPT agent, the important answer is that it is no longer available. ChatGPT Work may be the route OpenAI intends for longer tasks, yet the current Help Center material does not establish that it replaces the old agent’s browser, app, recurring-task, or payment workflows. Compare Work only after checking its live documentation and controls for your account type.
For either service, choose the narrowest permissions, keep a person in the loop for irreversible actions, use takeover mode for credentials, and treat privacy as a combination of retention, training, advertising, and operational-access policies rather than a single headline promise.
