Jollybot’s soft, rosy-cheeked design may make Meta’s Muse feel approachable, but it cannot tell you whether the agent is safe to connect to your accounts. Muse is built to do more than answer questions: Meta says it can use connected apps and a browser to take actions. In practice, trust depends on what you let it access, which actions require your approval, and how clearly you can inspect what it has done—not on its mascot.
What does Muse do, and why does its mascot matter?
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can work across connected apps, browse the web, fill in forms, negotiate, and continue some tasks after its app is closed. The company gives examples involving email, travel, shopping, and longer-running plans. These are capabilities Meta advertises; they are not independent evidence that Muse performs every task reliably.
The character representing Muse is Jollybot. Axios reported that Alex Cornell, Muse’s product design lead, designed the fuzzy, rosy-cheeked mascot. Axios interpreted the friendly face as a way to make an agent feel more approachable while people are uneasy about what AI agents can do. That is an interpretation of the design, not proof that the mascot changes users’ behavior or that Meta intends to mislead them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe distinction matters because an agent’s friendly presentation and its actual authority are separate things. A character can make software feel familiar; it cannot establish whether the software needs access to your email, can make a purchase, or handles information appropriately.

How does Meta say Muse’s safeguards work?
Meta’s September 2026 launch announcement says each Muse runs in a dedicated cloud virtual machine, an isolated computing environment. Meta says connected credentials are kept away from the core agent, while a separate system called Sentinel evaluates whether external actions are allowed, denied, or should require approval.
According to Meta, sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase prompt the user for approval. The company also describes an audit trail for reviewing activity, user control over which apps are connected, an option to opt out of training use, and the ability to ask Muse to forget particular memories. Meta’s announcement says, “Each person stays in control of their Muse and decides how much access it gets.” These are descriptions of the intended controls, not independent proof that every risk is eliminated.
The design addresses different parts of the problem: isolation is intended to limit what the agent can reach directly; Sentinel governs external actions; and approvals and an audit trail are meant to give users a role in consequential activity. None of those controls makes the underlying task harmless if the agent misunderstands a request, the user approves an action without noticing its consequences, or information the agent reads influences it in an unsafe way.

What risks does Meta acknowledge?
Meta’s own safety account makes clear that safeguards do not mean zero risk. Tarek Sheasha, a Meta engineer, wrote in a September 8, 2026 Meta AI Research post: “No matter how strong the model is at the core, any agent like this will still make mistakes, and it will sometimes be attacked via the data it reads.” In other words, material encountered while carrying out a task can itself pose a risk, not just the agent’s direct actions.
Sheasha added: “Muse can and will still make mistakes, but we expect they’ll be much less frequent and cause much less damage due to the safety systems we’ve built in.” That is Meta’s expectation for its safeguards, not a published independent measurement of error rates or the amount of damage they prevent. The practical question is therefore not whether Muse can be declared safe in the abstract, but whether its permissions and approval points make sense for the task you want it to perform.
What does the recent report about information on other people establish?
On October 6, 2026, Tom’s Guide reported that researcher Karan Joshi extracted internal Muse instructions through the normal chat interface. According to Tom’s Guide, the instructions described hourly processes that could build pages about people in a user’s life; the outlet attributed the findings to Wired. The underlying Wired page was unavailable to verify directly, so the report should be treated as an attributed account rather than independently confirmed evidence of a widespread compromise.

The report raises a distinct privacy question: an agent’s memory or background work may concern people who have never used it themselves. It does not, on the information available here, establish that every Muse user was affected, that such material was publicly exposed, or that Meta confirmed a breach. For users, it is a reason to ask what information a connected agent may collect or organize about others, and how to inspect or remove it.

Cross-app access is what can make an agent useful, but each connection expands the amount of personal information and activity within reach. Spotify says users can connect Muse to play and save tracks, create playlists, and find podcasts and audiobooks. That example is less consequential than sending an email or making a purchase, but it still illustrates the boundary crossing: Muse acts through a separate service rather than merely answering in a chat window.
Before connecting an app, consider the specific task and the scope of access it requires. If the benefit is a playlist, access to unrelated services may not be necessary. If a task involves email, purchases, travel plans, or information about other people, take extra care with what is connected and with any approval prompt.

How should you decide whether to trust Muse?
Meta’s safety post itself asks how much one can trust Muse “in practice.” There is no independent statistic in the sources cited here that quantifies whether Jollybot increases trust, or that establishes a general incident rate for Muse. A more useful judgment is based on the access and actions you can actually understand and control.
- Start with the task. Decide what you want Muse to do before connecting services, and avoid granting access that is not needed for that task.
- Check the action boundary. Pay attention to whether an action is read-only, changes an account, sends information, or spends money—and whether Meta says it will require approval.
- Use the audit trail. Review what the agent did rather than treating a completed task as proof that it behaved as intended.
- Consider whose information is involved. Email, contacts, travel, and personal plans can contain data about people besides the account holder.
- Reassess persistent or background work. If a task continues after the app closes, make sure you understand what it is allowed to do while you are not actively watching.
At launch on September 8, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Muse was limited to adults in the United States. That is launch-time eligibility information, not confirmation of the product’s current geographic or age availability.
