Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not support expandable storage. Their media is saved to built-in flash memory, and the official specifications do not describe a microSD slot, removable card, USB drive, or any other user-installable capacity upgrade. If the Meta AI app does not show an Import button, that is usually a pairing, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, app, or pending-capture problem—not a faulty SD card.
Use the steps below to determine whether you are seeing the normal fixed-storage design or an import failure, protect any captures that have not been copied, and decide when support or warranty service is appropriate.
What “expandable storage not recognized” means
The glasses use internal flash storage. Ray-Ban’s current product specifications describe 32GB of built-in flash memory and do not document a card slot or an expansion procedure. A microSD card cannot be inserted to increase the glasses’ capacity, and connecting a USB drive or a phone’s SD card does not turn it into additional glasses storage.

These figures come from Ray-Ban’s product specifications and are planning estimates. They should not be read as a promise that every owner will fit exactly that number, because capture format, duration, software data, and the combination of photos and videos affect the remaining space.
How storage and importing actually work
The glasses record to their own flash memory first. The Meta AI app then imports pending captures to the paired phone. The phone is the place to review, back up, and remove imported media; it is not a way to add a larger card to the glasses.
Ray-Ban says that actions needing a fast connection, including import and firmware updates, use a temporary internal Wi-Fi connection from the glasses. This is separate from simply having the phone connected to the internet. A phone can have internet access and still fail to import if its Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection to the glasses is unavailable.

The official FAQ states that the Import button should be visible only when all of these conditions are true:
- The glasses are paired with the Meta AI app.
- The glasses are powered on.
- The phone’s Wi-Fi is on.
- The phone’s Bluetooth is on.
- There are pending captures on the glasses.
If one condition is missing, the button may not appear. In particular, an empty queue after a successful import is not evidence that storage has disappeared; it means there are no pending captures for the app to copy.

Protect captures before changing anything
Media that has not been imported exists only on the glasses. Do not factory-reset them while important photos or videos remain pending. A reset can remove local data, and the official troubleshooting material does not promise recovery of unimported captures after a reset.
Before troubleshooting, keep the glasses powered, leave them near the phone, and avoid deleting or resetting anything until you know whether the files have reached the phone. If the captures are irreplaceable and import still fails, contact support and ask about recovery options before performing a reset.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Confirm that you are not looking for an expansion card
- Check the glasses’ model generation and the capacity listed in the official product specifications.
- Remove the expectation of a microSD slot, removable card tray, or USB storage setting; none is documented for Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
- Do not spend money on a card or drive as a capacity upgrade. Such an accessory cannot increase the glasses’ internal flash storage.
If your only symptom is that a card is not recognized, the hardware is behaving as designed. Continue with the import checks only if the app is also failing to copy captures.
2. Check every import condition
- Turn the glasses on.
- Open the Meta AI app and verify that the glasses still show as paired.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the phone. The phone does not merely need cellular internet; Wi-Fi must be enabled for the temporary transfer connection.
- Confirm that the glasses have new, unimported captures. The Import button is not expected when the queue is empty.
Keep the case and glasses close to the phone while checking. If the app immediately shows the captures after these conditions are met, import them before recording more media.
3. Restart the app and the glasses
- Close the Meta AI app completely.
- Power the glasses off, wait briefly, and power them back on.
- Reopen the Meta AI app and wait for the paired-glasses status to return.
- Look for Import again with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
This clears a temporary app or connection state without changing the glasses’ pairing settings. If the button remains absent, proceed to the pairing reset rather than searching for a storage driver.

4. Unpair and pair the glasses again
Ray-Ban’s pairing recovery path is in the Meta AI app:
- Open Settings.
- Select Your glasses.
- Choose General.
- Tap Unpair glasses.
- Pair the glasses again with them in the case and powered on.
The official FAQ says that unpairing does not erase settings. Pairing again rebuilds the app connection that controls imports; it does not add storage or change the 32GB hardware limit. After pairing, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, create or retain a pending capture if appropriate, and check whether Import returns.
5. Apply the Android update-import recovery
If an Android phone reports an error related to an update while importing media, Ray-Ban’s recovery instruction is to force-stop the Meta AI app:
- Open the phone’s Apps settings.
- Select Meta AI.
- Tap Force stop.
- Reopen Meta AI and retry the import.
Force-stopping is an app reset; it is not a factory reset of the glasses. If you use another phone operating system, use the ordinary close-and-reopen step and follow the app’s own prompts rather than applying Android-only menu names.
6. Retry import before recording more
- Leave the glasses on and paired.
- Keep phone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- Open Meta AI and start Import when it appears.
- Wait for the transfer to finish before capturing additional media.
- Open the phone’s destination gallery or media area and confirm that the files are present before deleting anything from the glasses.
Importing first gives you a verifiable copy. Deleting merely to make the glasses appear less full, without checking the phone copy, risks losing the only version of a capture.

7. Escalate when the official recovery path fails
If restarting, re-pairing, and the Android force-stop procedure do not restore importing, Ray-Ban’s FAQ directs owners to open a warranty claim or contact support. Describe the generation, the phone operating system, whether the glasses are paired, whether Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled, whether pending captures exist, and the exact error or missing button. That information helps support distinguish a connection fault from a hardware issue.
Do not substitute an unverified storage accessory for warranty service. A card, USB drive, or phone SD card cannot repair the glasses’ internal flash or create an official transfer path.
How to free space safely
Because capacity is fixed, space management is a routine import-and-delete cycle rather than an upgrade. Use this order:
- Import pending captures to the paired phone.
- Confirm that the photos and videos open from the phone’s media library or the location selected by Meta AI.
- Back up the files using your normal phone backup process if they matter.
- Only then remove captures from the glasses using the app’s available controls.
- Repeat the cycle before a long recording session.
The published capture counts are useful for planning, but they are not a live capacity meter. A session containing long videos can consume space faster than a session of still photos, and the same 32GB specification can correspond to different practical workloads across generations. Treat the first warning or failed capture as a prompt to import, verify, and clear space rather than as a reason to search for a card.

Planning around your workload
- Occasional photos: Import after outings so pending captures do not accumulate.
- Frequent short videos: Plan imports more often because video uses the available capacity faster than still images.
- Travel or events: Carry a phone with enough free local storage and a charging plan, and perform a test import before relying on the glasses for irreplaceable moments.
- Heavy daily recording: Compare your actual import frequency and capture mix with the published generation estimates. If fixed capacity remains inadequate after disciplined imports, a newer-capacity generation or a warranty replacement is the relevant hardware decision—not removable media.
The real choices when storage appears full

Common symptoms and what they indicate
“The glasses do not recognize my microSD card.”
There is no official microSD expansion feature to recognize. The absence of a card menu or card status is expected. Remove the card from your troubleshooting plan and focus on importing the glasses’ internal captures.

“Import is missing even though I took photos.”
Check all five conditions: powered-on glasses, pairing in Meta AI, phone Wi-Fi on, phone Bluetooth on, and pending captures. Then restart both ends. If the button remains absent, unpair and pair again through Settings, Your glasses, General, and Unpair glasses.
“The phone has internet, so why does import fail?”
Internet access alone is not sufficient. Import uses a temporary internal Wi-Fi connection from the glasses for fast transfers, while Bluetooth and pairing establish the device relationship. Enable both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone.
“Will unpairing delete my settings?”
Ray-Ban’s official FAQ says unpairing does not erase settings. It is the documented reset for the app connection, not a storage expansion or factory wipe.
“Can a USB drive or phone SD card hold more captures?”
Not as glasses storage. Those devices may store files after you import them to the phone or another computer, but they do not increase the internal flash capacity available while the glasses are recording.
“Should I factory-reset before contacting support?”
No, not while important media remains only on the glasses. Ask support about recovery first. A reset can remove local data, and no guaranteed recovery procedure is documented for unimported captures.
When a newer generation makes sense
Generation matters because Ray-Ban publishes different capture estimates: Gen 1 and Gen 2 are listed at 500-plus photos or 100-plus 30-second videos, while Gen 3 is listed at 1,000-plus photos and 100-plus 30-second videos. Those are still estimates, and the listed flash capacity is 32GB. A newer generation may fit your recording pattern better, but it is not the same as adding a card to an existing pair.
Base the decision on four facts: your generation, how many photos and videos you make between imports, how much free phone storage is available for transfers, and whether the current glasses are still covered by warranty. If importing fails unexpectedly on a device that previously worked, pursue troubleshooting and support before buying another pair.
Bottom line
Ray-Ban Meta glasses have fixed internal flash storage, not expandable storage. Do not buy a microSD card or USB drive expecting the glasses to recognize it. When Import is missing, turn on the glasses, keep them paired, enable phone Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, restart both devices, re-pair through Settings > Your glasses > General > Unpair glasses, and use Android’s Force stop for an update-related import error. Protect unimported captures, and contact Ray-Ban support or warranty service if the official recovery steps fail.
